Allen Temple Churrh was organised in 1949 under the pastorate of the late Rever end T.A. Sears. It was named for the person re sponsible for a huge expan sion program of the C.M.K. Churrh. I)r. J. Claude Allen, now Bishop Allen. The late Bishop F. L. Lewis was the presiding Bishop. The members of Allen Temple came from many other Black churches in Port land organized at the lime. Many of them were former C.M.E.'s who had come to Portland earlier to live. The members of the rhurrh wish to express their gratitude to those churches for their support and encouragement in Allen Temple's early in fancy. Like most rhurches it was discussed in homes, talk ed about organization on the streets, and met in differ ent places until it was es lablished at N.K. 9th ?\ve nue and Hancock with its own rhurrh building. In 1962 it was relocated at 8th Ave nue and Skidmore, the pres ent location. We invite all member», former members and friends to come celebrate the 24th Birthday of Allen Temple C.M.K. Love w ill heal you. Love w ill com fo rt you. Love w ill guide you. L o v e w ill illum ine you. Love w ill re deem you from sin, sickness, and death, and lead you to the prom ised land, the place that is altogether lovely. M ost people understand love to mean sim ply love between the sexes. It does mean this, but also much m o re . On the deepest level, love is an in stinctive force present in every person from b irth to death. I t is a profound urge to p reserve and extend life by means of union with another living force, and it expresses its e lf through an exchange of energy that m utually strength ens and rejuvenates. Love is bom when the child rests in its m other’ s a rm s . Love also means love of God, a love that sustains us when human relationships cru m b le. Love heals, cultivates, p ro tect and in s p ire s .M a n y times the lack of love makes people depressed, anxious and w ith out zest fo r life . They rem ain lonely and without friends; th e ir life like a barren tread m ill, stripped of all creative action and joy. But there is no d iffic u lty that enough lo v e w ill not conquer; no disease that enough love w ill not heal; no d oo r that enough love w ill not open; no gulf that enough love w ill not bridge; no w all that enough love w ill not throw down; no sin that enough love w ill not redeem . B rothers and Sisters it makes no difference how deeply seated may be the trouble, how g re a t the m is take: how hopeless the outlook, a sufficient realizatio n of love w ill dissolve it a ll. If only you could love enough you would be the happiest and most powerful being in the w orld; because God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him . Williams, Pastor “ The church with a h e a rt-fe lt w elcom e*’ Nursery Core Provided ' 2 00 a - »o» We ere "GOLDEN AGE CRUSADE FOR C H R IS T " « Religious Hindu people have a custom and tradition that as soon as the eldest son can carry on the re sponsihilities of the family a father has fulfilled his obli gallon to his ancestors, es perially if he is a Rrahman. He should r e t i r e from the life of a householder and spend his life in devotion to the gods. Such men used to live as hermits in the lor ests, but even if they remain in their homes they under take to devote their remain ing years to meditating and worshipping God. A small proportion of them berorne "sannyasi" or holy men, travelling about, slopping in village courtyards, exhort ing people to greater de voutness, and quoting inapt red passages from their sa cred scriptures. They carry begging howls anil are given ford or small gifts by which they live. "The true sannyasi seri ously seeks to free himself from himself. He would not think of anything as his own, not even his body or his thoughts. "He does not want to be a separate individual, for he knows that the self apart from God is nothing. His only life is in knowing and loving God." Remember these people know nothing about our wonderful Christ, His teach ings ami great promises to those who OBEY HIS WHOLE INSTRUCTION. Yet there is no tradition in Christian lands of holy penpk- going about in ones or twos, or groups like the d iscip les, doing Christ's command ments. It is a great zeal of mine to start such a tradition. It is my resolution to form a “GOLDEN AGE CRUSADE FOR CHRIST', a movement ol the very devoutly religious people, freed from families and home ties, property and the confinements of occupation who will attend retreats, and follow the example of Christ STRIVING TO DO HIS W H O I. E INSTRUC TION AND MIRACLES. Such persons will not go about with begging bowls; after all, we have our Social Security checks. At first Christ sent His disciples out by twos, “without purse or script." Later He said take purses ami a change ol clothing. Many w ill, of course, go about in camper» ami mohik- homes, ‘roughing it smoothly', evangelizing ami giving of their means to help the needy. Bui serious |y we seek out the very devout, the "worthy ones” who know they must do GOD’S WHOLE WILL and Christ's instruction to enter the kingdom of heaven.
