Author Unknown planned fo r 1000 turned into a gathering of 2500 people spilling Into the aisles and into other rooms of the great church. The o rd er of worship In cluded leaders from Protes tant, Catholic and Jewish faiths who joined in common fellowship to protest the w ar carried on in their names. Readings from scripture and p rayer w ere rudely Interrup t ed by M c In tire and his follow e rs shouting, "V ic to ry In V ie tn a m l" and "W hy don't you say anything about North V ie t namese attroclties? " They were escorted from the room. W illia m Sloan Coffin served as m aster of ceremonies for all proceedings. Eugene Carson Blake of the World Council of Churches and other religious leaders read the lit urgy. Ramsey C la rk spoke concerning his recent visit to North Vietnam and the dev astation which 1« saw. He especially admired the close ness of Vietnamese fam ily life and spoke of th eir love, respect and devotion to tlie e ld e rly In th eir society. Nguyen T h l Ngoc Thoa B ran f- man, a nurse from South V ie t by A. L. to mutual edification and C h ris ti ikeness. It seems to me that In spite of an apparent weakening of t ie home life of A m erica, that the home is the most powerful educational Insti tution and the parents are tie true teachers of th e ir ch il d ren. T herefore, we must not fall to give direction ami inspiration fo r Christian homemaking. If God has teen left out of m a rria g e, an institution that le him self established, he must be invited to return. T h ere is fa r less chance of divorce and the tragedies that follow among couples who • og n i • f * MtTRAN* peace legislation, thinks such visits to Washington might be a waste of time and money, and that the effort might serve a better purpose if we would work with labor unions, serv ice clubs, churches, etc . to build a political base onwhich Congress can build. Al U ll- man wants strong legislature action to end the w ar. The biggest surprise was Wendell W yatt who has given solid backing to the President on nearly all of his w ar policies. He showed us a copy of a letter he had written to tie President fo r his personal attention denouncing the re cent bombing as m ilita rily unwise, destructive of chances fo r successful negotation, and a stain on Am erica’ s reputa tion in the w orld. He feels that he can be more effective working behind the scenes than blasting the President public ly . The President was the hardest to reach. 1 called twice from Portland and wrote a le tte r requesting an appoint ment with the President o r an aid prepared to discuss the questions I posed. I called again a fter I got to Washing- ton, hut was told that an ap pointment would not be possi ble, but that 1 could leave the letters 1 c arried and that I should d ire c t them to M r . David P a rk e r, an aid to the President regarding foreign a ffa irs . A fter a little chat with the m ail cle rk at the Old Executive Building, he wished us luck and put the le tte rs In a c o u rie r envelope to M r . David P a rk e r. T h is is just one example to Illustrate the vast distance and Isolation of the people from th e irP re s i- dent. As W ill lam Sloan Coffin said in his concluding rem arks at the Thursday afternoon ses sion, "W e may not be rep re sented wisely, but we are represented all too w e ll." He also reminded us that we should be concerned not only with what happens out there, but with what happens In here, inside each of us. 7 he move ment fo r peace needs more loving and caring for each other, c le a re r thinking, m o re * articulate expression and dis ciplined emotions tochallenge the violence of our institutions with the power of non-violent methods of action and truth. above us, faith in the little infinite soul within us, faith in life and in our feilow souls - without faith, the plus qual ity, we cannot really live. To faith must be added a life of wisdom which may be sum m arized in six words, the three greatest maxims of the race. Two, we owe to Greece, two to Rome, and two to Judea: "Know thyself, control thy self, give thy s e lf." F o r the rest; hope much, fear not at a ll, love with all your heart, do your best, seek the best in others: take life and dare Henderson In this computer-minded age. when personality has been de-personalized, tlie Church continues to a ffirm the dignity and worth of human beings. Man is more than a machine: man is a child of God, a fre e soul with selfhood, a relative of humanity made in the Image of God. In Industry, man is a num b er. In the armed services of our country, man is a serial number. In our social structured society, our w el fare state, man is a case num ber. Everywhere man is a number, a nameless face. Such de-humanizlng of human beings Is all too prevalent in the age of the atom. Dostoevski causes one of his characters to say. " I am an X In an Indeterminate equa- V. Brown o u r objective as the Com munity Church of God Is to live according to tie Com mandments of C h ris t as taught In tie New Testament, to preach the simple and en tire g ospel of salvation, C h ristian life and C hristian duty at home and abroad to encourage and admonish back of AFSC, Eugene; Ben Rich mond, AFSC staff, Portland; Susan O rlansky, Reed student, Portland; Ruth Van Dyke, Stu dent at Western Reserve Un iversity In Cleveland, of C o r vallis; and Joriet Stevenson of Astoria; and m e. In summary, eachofourlaw makers sees himself as an advocate of peace. All of them have been appalled at the re cent intensive bombing of 'lensely populated areas. D e l- lenbach, Wyatt and Packwood have confidently expected peace, but believe the recent bombing may force Congress to act to end the w a r. They now question whether tie President has the w ill o r the ability to end it, but so fa r they are not committed to any course of action In this regard. Edith Green does the most thorough job of documenting her statements and votes against the w a r. The problem seems to be a lack of motiva tion to assume leadership fo r peace and unwillingness to support legislation to end the w ar if other aspects of de fense would be affected. M ark Hatfield, who has the strong est record as a prom oter of The Parson’s Pen Smile -God loves you by Reverend nam, told of tier brother and many thousands of others who are in ja il because they want peace. She said, "Y ourpeople were told to come and pro tect us. And instead th e ir bombs pour on our heads. You think the bombs a re stop ping, but the bombs are still raining on my country." P h il ip B arrigan spoke, and Joan Baez and o tters sang peace and freedom songs. As people picked up candles fo r the si lent vigil across Lafayette P a rk from the White House Joan explained that It was raining outside, but we should te thankful it was only w a te r. At the vigil the dripping wet p ilg rim s dropped contribu tions into a large b arrel tabled " F o r the V ic tim s ” to help relieve suffering of the w a r. A fte r the briefing next morning, the Oregonians cau cused to plan strategy. 7 hose present included Ray H a rt- sough, Peace Secretary fo r the Northwest of AFSC: M a rk Beals, a staff m em ber of P o rt land Youth fo r C h rist; E d - wlna W ills , authorof a recent ly published book, "Rhapsody on L o v e ," from Sheridan; Charles G ray, national board read tie Bible, who pray to gether dally and go to church. Disputes may aris e about money, sex and children. Use this simple formula: Get on your knees, hold hands, and say together, " L o rd , we've argued. W e’ve beconw hurt and angry. Help us to under stand each other and. Lord, please forgive u s." The ch il dren need the love and gui dance of two parents If they are to realize th e ir potential; to walk out on them is to destroy a p a n of th e ir birth right and to jeopardize th e ir future happiness. You are invited to come and worship with us. tion. I am a sort of a phan tom of life who has lost all beginnings and end. who has forgotten his name.” The af firm ation of tlie Church con fronts every man with the words, " I know your real name. You are not an X in an indeterminate equation o r a phantom In life, you are a child of God. You a r e a broth e r of man in C h ris t.” L e t God he thanked, there is on earth an Institution that transcends race, nation, and class; an institution which loyally undertakes to embody the s p irit of C h rist, and In his name to relieve human suffering. promote human w elfare and c a rry on a m in- isty of reconciliation among men. Statistics tell us that pop ulation continues to increase at an accelerated rate. W orld production of food, while at a record rate, is dropping per w o rk e r. T here is an awesome Increase in new knowledge, and all of this makes fo r com plexity. The uses of tech nology, the creation of more leisure, the vast increase In specialized and scientific knowledge - all these tend to make many men lose th eir sense of self and feel alien ated and alone. Such are the problems, h it what are the possibilities? Have we tlie power to solve these age-old perplexities? TheChurchsays yes! The Church's message now, as in days of old is the same yesterday, today and forever. The message Is simple, the directions c le a r. To live well; the Church contends, we must have a faith fit to live by, a self fit to live with, and a work fit to live fo r - some thing to which we can give ourselves and thus get our selves off our hands. We can not tell what may happen to us in this strange medley of life . But we can decide what happens within us - how we do with it - and that is what re a lly counts in the end. How to take the raw stuff of life and make it a thing of worth and beauty - that is the test of living. Courage is the firs t virtue, as kind ness is the final joy - " T o be a little kinder than neces s a ry ." To take life fo r grant ed, grudgingly, is to spoil it; whereas to take it fo r g ra titude, bravely and without fe a r is to enjoy it, despite all its aches and ills . To be happy is easy enough if we give ourselves, forg.ve oth e rs , and live with thanksgiv ing. No self-centered person, no ungrateful soul can ever be happy, much less make anyone else happy. L ife is giving, not gening. L ife is an adventure of faith if we are to be victors ever it, not victim s of it: Faith in God yAethodisf it, have a little fun and share it: and put your trust in "the veiled kindness of the Father of m en,” in whose great hand we stand.
