Portland/O bserver Thursday November 23, 1972 Page 7 H um an Emphasis A m adu Korom a: Falcon soccer star By Tom Boothe, PhD. Professor of Communications Heuristics D e a r D r . Boothe: I am African, and 1 am con stantly asked by white people why are the Blacks w earlry A fro's and Dasheiki, and most of the Africans are dressed modestly western style? 1 really don't know how to answer th eir questions, what would you suggest? liy Shannon Fears Ona of the brighter «U |»r- stars In the Oregon High School Soccer League this year la Amadu Koroma of the Oregon Eplacotwl Falcons. Amadu, a junior and a native of Sierre Leone, Africa, la an IM-goal scorer for the F a l cons and the most Integral p a n of their offense. Coach John Hicks has much pralae for his star forward, calling him the heat left-footed a hooter in the League. D e ar Western Dresser: Why do people wear Italian styles dress, French style dress o r any of the current styles of dress? Because different styles project dif ferent Images and certain p er sons who ask you these quest ions is "Because They Like It.” Koroma begun hla IV72 sea son auspiciously, scoring three times In his firs t game. And he haa teen most valua ble to tie Falcons when a goal was needed. In a crucial game against La Salle in October, Koroma scored every Falcon goal In a much needed 3-3 tie. In tie same week he le a l M t. Angel with a pair of goals in a 2-1 Fal con victory. Ke1!gle Jones, the black M arine corporal who trounced a Russian boxer during the Munich Olympics yet ‘ ’ lost’ ' the highly controversial and widely viewed match, w ill fight his Eastern European opponent again. This time, however, the bout will not be fought near eith er the beer gardens of Munich or the cold monuments of Moscow. Instead, Las Vegas w ill be the site of the re-match between a Soviet light middleweight namt»I Valery Tregubov and Reggie Jones of Newark, New Je rs ey. In the last bout, Jones ended the fight with more points than TreguDov, but the scoring system was so convoluted and complex that the Russian was declared the winner. The crowd of 6.000 watching the bout In person hooted with dishelief call ing the officials "Schiebert1" (crook). As tie Falcons leaded down the home stretch en route to a playoff le rth , Amadu was Instrumental in two crucial 0 6 S victories, on October 18 his penaly kick proved to le tie winning goal In a 2-0 victory over H ills boro that dropped He Spar tans from playoff competition. The Falcons w ill 1» for tunate to have Koroma back text year for his second yeai of play. I am 19 and I have been in M cLaren and I have been warned that if I have one more arre st it's Rocky Butt. About 7 months ago 1 knocked up my 15 year old g irlfrien d , and I promised to m a rry her but the judge told me no dice along with her fam ily. I do w art to sup port the child as it is due very soon. But 1 can't find a job because of my record and I fell out of school at the 10th grade. Now my g irl don’t believe me about look ing for a job, and when 1 do get a job I can't seem to hold it over 2 weeks. I real ly want to work to support my child, but 1 just can’t seem to have any stability. Now I am desperate, what can 1 do to change my image? D ear Desperate: You'll have to make that commitment to yourself and work at it. The State of Oregon has a program which deals with your kind of situation make a visit to the Oregon State Personnel Division 1400 S.W. 5th Ave. Phone 229-5844 and ask them about th eC .E .P . program and level with them about your background and ex press your desire to work and improve your image. The secret is making the commitment to your self. D ear D r . Booth: My husband is just great 4 days a weak and then he gets paid on Friday he finds his friends and they stop by the bar and drink and gamble his money away and it's usually Su/xlay night when his cronies deliver him at my doorstep on his knees dirty; smelly, and broke. I have cried, pleaded and threaten to leave him, but each time he swears it's the last time but comes pa play the whole mess starts all over again. I have 3 lovely daughters and if 1 gave up my part time job, we would of starved to death long time ago, but 1 still love the bum. Don’t tell me to pray because 1 have tried everything from a Voo Doo doctor down to trying to hypnotize him. 1 need help, what do you suggest? D ear Wife: 1 think you and your hus band needs professional counseling at the fam ily level. You may check with the County Court House, Fam ily Con sultant Services are available If you call 227-8411. They w ill be able to recommend a counselor who is qualified to effectively deal with your problem. D ear D r . Boothe: I am a Church going C hris tian, and I have always been taught that prayer changes things. M y problem is that my husband won’t go to Church, and he has argued so much that 1 can’t get the rest of the fam ily to go because of his attitude. We are al most breaking up over this because he knows how much it means to me. How can 1 get my husband to shut up, if he wants to go to hell fine, but why should he force every body to join him? D ear Church Goer: I think if you prayed more and argued less, prayer would change things. You are going to have to show your children the advantages in going to Church not just m e rrily tell them that they should go.
