Although, there are now many fa c ilitie s open to the general public in the P ortlarxl area, it s till serves a d is tin c t purpose as the only a r t center that caters to the young a rtis ts in the A l bina com m unity. It is not so much a c ra ft cen te r fo r litt le children as it is a m eeting grounds fo r local black a.ndwhite a rtis ts . T oran, in his b rie f rem a rks, said: " I f I am selected, I w ill always serve the needs of the com m unity , . . since I believe that p o litic s must re fle c t those needs. P o litic s is the best m ethixi to solve the problem s of the Black com m unity . . . and the p o liticia n m ust rea lize that he la s to serve the in te re sts of his consti tuents f i r s t . Jones said: "O u re co n o m ic base m ust be broadened . . . yet, our future is irre v o c a b ly tied to the la rg e r m etropo lita n com m unity . . . that we only need to walk through our own neighborhood to see that we are running in second and th rid place po sitio ns.” J ones concluded that he would support any candidate nomi nated by the convention and he signed the pledge of com m itm en t to the com m unity. E llis Casson, P reside nt of the P ortland Branch, NAACP, was nominated by M r , Payne. Casson’ s nom ination was s p o n s o r e d by the NAAC P. Casson declined the nomina tion because he fe lt the requirem ent that candidates sign a pledge to no longer seek the appointment i f not chose by the convention would be playing into the hands of the white power s tru c tu re . M s. Ruth Spencer, a Black school-teacher and a nominee, gave her support to A tto rne y John T oran . She said that "w e need people who a re not tied to tlie establishm ent o r system and who liave demon strated a concern and com m itm ent to the B lack com m un ity.
