P o r t la n d /O b s e r v e r North Portland holds Cathedral Park Festival The Cathedral Park Festi val was liaM under (|,e «¿t. Johns Bridge on August 12th to promote tlw use of the park, which is located under the north end of the brklge. The St. Johns Brklge has been dlstlngulslssd by brklge experts as one of the seven most leautlful in tlie world. By city ordinance on July I, W O , the St.Johns Brklgewss designated a Portland H isto ri cal Landmark. D r . Davkl B. Stalnman of Koblnson and Stalnman, Con sulting Engineers, wssthede- slgner. lie has called the St. Johns Bridge his "a rtla tlc masterplece” , Robert Boblaw was tie resklent engineer. The bridge was tu llt in 21 months at a cost ol $4,250,000. It was dedicated on June 13,’ 1*31, as the climax of the Rose Festival. The people of North Port land participated In ti» Cathe dral Park Festival to empha size tin need for proper and park, however, is tie cathe- d ra l-llk e appearance of tl« concrete arches supporting die brklge. The architectural consis tency of the design provides an overall continuity that Is rare in bridge design. Its aesthe tic module, the pointed gothic arch, prevails not only In the tall viaduct piers lu t also In the steel batterleg towers. At tlie time it was Ixult it represented a number of ■‘f i r s t s " for suspension brklge construction. The sus pension span ol 1207 ft.was the longest of any kind west of De tro it. It was tlie largest steel attend «¿sponsion brklge in the world. (if course, one of the moat significant architectural fea tures of the brklge is tl» sym pathetic use of tlie tall reln- foroed concrete piers to carry the approach spans. Varying In height from 22 to 150 feet, tl» two shafts of each pier rise from a leavlly reinforced concrete footing, tailoring to wards the top with tlie Inskle faces converging to form the sothic arch. Although common today, one of tl« unusual lea lures of tl» viaduct pier con struction was the use of transit m ix concrete. About 16,000 cubic yards of concrete were required. The cathedral effect of these piers Is a unique aspect of Oils landmark bridge. One only has to be within these giant gothic arches during a foggy spell to experience an Incredible spatial phenome non.
