POUT LA M ) ■£> OHSEHVEK uuai purpose Religion in the News By Chuck Singleton " , . . making my joy com plete by being of the sam. mind, maintaining tie same love, united in spirit, intent on one purpose." P h il. 2:2. The story is told of "Cool B re e ze ", the super hip young brother on Front Street. It seems that one of tie local churches had caught fire d ur ing a riot and "Breeze ’ stood wi 'hmg It burn. The m inister walkeu over to "B re e ze ” and said, "Youngman, you've nev e r teen to my church lefo re have you?” "B re e ze " count ered, "D ig , your church aln t never been on fire le fo re ." Many of us church-goers are wordering where the Cool Breezes are on Sunday morn ings. And the answer is t le y r e looking fo r the fire . When tie fire of spiritual power burns in the hearts of church people we won’t be able to handle the overflow of young converts. Jesus sa d , " I am come to cast fire upon the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled." (Luke 12:49) When a church depends upon ice cream socials, tea parties, and chicken fries for it s existence, it w ill become as cold as the icecream , as weak as the tea. a d as dead as the chicken. The questioning " now" gen eration, not yet having become a part of the traditional church program, drop off like flies wlen they become aware of a lack of spiritual power. Today many church leaders make attempts to attract the youth w th non-spiritual, sec ular programs and have found no great increase in church attendance. But when the em phasis is placed on the dyna mics of the C h rist-filled life, many churches are not only finding the quality lives among its young, but also the quantity youth. Just as the baby is attract ed hy the fire that burns, youth w ill be attracted by the spir itual fire that purifies.
