F o r the YMCA youth w o rk e r, the m in t-b ike becomes a tool to reach the "h a rd - to - rea ch" youth. E a c h Y -R x le i club is kept sm all so that the youth w o rke r gets to know each club m em ber personally as an individual. I he w o rk e r's only jo b is his m m i-b ik e club, so a ll his working tune is spent relating to his club m em bers, then fa m ilie s , th e ir schools, anil a ll the other people and in stitu tion s who occupy a place in the youth’ s life . So, in whatever d ire c tion, the youth w o rke r knows what’ s going on w ith his club m em bers and can step into any situation w ith a helping hand. North Branch Y sets goal The N orth Portland YMCA, 5430 N . M oore, this month is organizing th e ir annual P a rt n e r-M e m b e rs h ip Campaign fo r 1972. A Branch goal of $6,500 from residents, busi nessmen and frien ds in N o ith and N o ithe ast P ortland has been set. The f ir s t re p o rt of the Campaign shows$2,007.50 pledged to help youth in the YMCA program , according to R obert Hesseltine, Campaign Chan man, and Noi th Portland a rc h ite c t. M r . Hesseltine a l s o an nounced a $ 45,000 grant from the M et) opolitan YMCA Asso cia tion to run the N orth YMCA p ro gra m fo r 1972. The balance of the operating budget fo r the year w ill be raised du rin g the Cam paign f o r con tribu ting m em bers and through p ro - gram fees assessed from p a r ticip an ts durin g the ye a r. M r . H esseltine stressed the im portance of t h e Campaign to the total N o rth Portland YMCA program since fees assessed program p a rticip a n ts pay only a pa rt of the total cost of run ning the p ro gra m s. The N o rth Portland YMCA is c u rre n tly involved in a va r i e t y of p ro gra m s providing youth opportunities fo r in volvem ent in group situations. The m a jo r emphasis at the N o rth Branch is the aquatic program in the building fa c il ity , and the club progi am in the schools and the com m u n ity . Anyone wishing to con ti i- bute o r subscribe to the N o rth P ortland Y M C A ’ s com m unity e ffo rt may d o s o b y c a llin g R a y o r L e s lie at the Y , 282-5517. The Y -R id e rs program em phasizes safety, m echanics, citize nsh ip, and se lf - c o n ti- dence. The young m em bers of the club plan ami c a rry out th e ir own a c tiv itie s . Riding is also a large p a rt of the pro gra m , but racing is not. Rather, the em phasis is on d r ills , form atio ns, obstacle courses, and team w ork. Each club m em ber can te a r down and rebuild his bike ami w ith in a short period of tim e , knows every nut, bolt and spoke in tim ately. I he Y - R id e rs program takes a non-m em bership ap proach. W hile each club mem ber is "s ig n e d -u p " on a ro s te r, he does not have to jo in t h e y . There are no m em ber ship fees o r program m onies requested fro m the club mem bers. The m in i-b ik e club c o o id i- nators are trained Y youth w o rke rs, and the YMCA is lending its fa c ilitie s , re so u r ces, and support to the Y - R iders program . But, the I'i ’ provided the club members with ja cke ts. P a c ific N o rth west Hell gave us a van tru c k . C huck's A rco Station in Bea verton helps us w ith tru ck re p a irs . M ike sm ith Auto m otive helps keep our equip m ent going. F rie n d ly Chev ro le t Ivans us trucks when we need them . M t. Scott Fuel gave us bark dust fo r our southeast P ortland rid in g fie ld . Lake Oswego E lk s C lu b gave us rk lin g space fo r the bikes m that area. Brown Lddsniobiie gave us money which we used to make some v e ry necessary re p a irs to the tru c k .
