Richard A. Bogle was born in Jam aica where his fathe r, P a u l
Bogle, led an in s u rre c tio n and was hung. A t the age of 12 he
stowed away on a ship to New Y o rk. He la te r came west, going
f ir s t to C a lifo rn ia , where he mined fo r gold. He moved to Rose
burg, Oregon, in the 1850's where he had a b a rbe r shop. He
m a rrie d A m e rica Waldo in Salem, who w as theuaughte: of Dan
iel W aldo, a white pioneer settled in Waldo H ills near Eugene.
Her m other wasa slave. Am erica was brought overland to Ore
gon by the Waldo fa m ily and was granted her freedom . She and
her fa m ily lived in Salem.
R ichard Bogle and his w ife moved to W alla W alla where he
was one of the founders o f the W alla W alla Savings ami Loan As
sociatio n. He was a wealthy man, continuing his trade as a bar
ber and ranching. He had many ch ild re n , those who lived being,
W arren . Kate, W aldo, A rth u r and Rose.
A rth u r Bogle had a b a r b e r shop in P ortland in the e a r l y
1900's. He m a rrie d Bonnie Thomas and th e y had one c h i l d ,
