The ea rlie st Jewish com munity was formed in A m ster dam after the defeat of tne Spanish Armada in 1588. When they arrived from Spain they came o ffic ia lly as Christians to escape persecution under the Spanish inquisition. Once in Holland, they were free to practice their own religion. The Jewish community prospered and by 1780, they numbered 22,000. They had great influence on the com mercial prosperity and tne culture of the city. One of the finest buildings in Amsterdam is a 17th Cen tury Portuguese synagogue where services are s till held by candle light. The synago gue also houses a lib ra ry of 20,000 Hebrew books and old prints. EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Tokenism is not enough 5828 N E. 8th A. Lee Henderson, Minister 2 8 8 -5 4 29 Ellis Casson, Associate Minister There is a school of thought among Negro Americans, not l i mited to so-called m ilitants, which holds that the whole kit anil kaboddle in Am erica Is stacked against the Negro. They declare that no m atter what his s k ill, training and experience, the black man or woman is behind a perpetual eight-ball. Of course. If this is analyzed It can be shown in enough in stances to be not completely true, but the e ffo rt takes some do ing. What hurts is that the statistics constantly reveal racial hocuspocus m nearly every field. Sooner than later, because of their experiences and of their natural suspicions, the rank and file blacks begin to believe the revelations. The latest of thesedeals with earning power and It shows, as all black and white c ritic s are Insisting, that the black income is lowest on the totem pole, this time lower than that of persons of Spanish-speaking ancestry, q he c ritic s are citing the firs t comparative figures from the Census Bureau which show the typical fam ily Income of whites to have been $10,240 in 1970; Spanish - speaking, $7,3'30; and Negro Americans, $0,280. The Spanish-speaking total ia Inadequate arxl reflects the racial prejudice with which members of the group have to con tend. But while this prejudice Is shameful in its impact, the s till lower position of the black breadwinner is a greater indictment of white American society . The difference In the figure Is $1,050 a year more. It is small wonder that some blacks take a mistakenly dim view of schooling. AU of which, translated into Lenox Avenue orSouth Parkway or South Central Avenue language, means: " A ll the folks who don’ t have black skins, or who speak a foreign language o r have a strong foreign accent even if they are dark-skinned and all white foreigners (many of whom despise the United States) can get Jobs and good pay - even high income - except Negro Amei (cans who have been In thia country for only 350 years, who have been " fr e e ” citizens fo r 108 years and have fought and died In every w ar in which th e ir country has been engaged. Undeniably there has been progress. The signs are all around since It is hard to miss the standout black skins In areas which used to be m ilky-w hite. But the scattered Instances In each In dividual’ s experience are set, 10 years, against the mass figures of the census. These tell a somewhat different tale. The self-congratualtions of American generally ought to he muted and each citizen ought to bedlligentiy about the business of equality of opportunity in hla sphere of influence. Black Americans deserve better than a share of democracy fed to them parsimoniously by the teaspoonful. 9:45 am 11:00 am 12:00 noon Church School Morning W orship W ed Noon — The Hour o f Power W e d Prayer A Clast M eeting 7:30 pm N u rtery Care Provided 'W e ere m e k m g our N e ig h b o rh o o d A B ro th e rh o o d " * m i - * ’ ■ " j ___________________ V ancouver Ave. First Baptist ( ’hurt h 3138 N.
