What w ill your Yule nee be this year? there is a good chance you could he torn be tween following the advice of the environmental groups and tlie pleading voice of tlie Christmas tree grower. Tree growers urge the use of a natural tree and the environ mentalists w ill lean towards leaving the natural trees in the woods where they are happy. Before we take the advice of the envrlonmeutal interests and rush to the store to buy a plastic, metal or what-have- you kind of tree. let’ s exa mine some facts and then determine if we have lux urious appetites for Jest mo tion of nature’ s creations. It could be that our source of Information has come from the misinformed who merely advocate the discontinuance of a practice without knowing all the facts. Open wilderness areas or even nearby farmlands have changed during the last fifty years to the point where they do not exist. No more area is open to the public fo r entry to search fo r aChrtstmas tree and cut the selection without anyone being w iser. Severs penalties are given to vio lators who enter public or private lands without proper authorization In w ritin g to “ borrow” the tree fo r the holidays. Trees available on the city lot come in assorted sizes, types and prices from farms where they are grown to be harvested as Christmas trees. The land used fo r growing Yule trees Is not high qual ity land and usually consists of that which was barren and eroding badly before the tree growing operation began. Shallow, low quality land lends itse lf to this U9e because the growth rate is slow and Ideal fo r production of the best quality trees. Trees grown on this land must be harvest ed Instead of being left as a new forest. Plant food and root growing room is not abun dant enough to mature a tree to natural size. When it comes to w ild life habitat, no tra ct of land Is ever again cut e ntirely bare of trees. The grower starts the production cycle with more than seventeen-hundred trees per acre and maintains tills number by constant replant ing as the harvest progresses each year. Grass cover is allowed to grow between trees making an Ideal situation fo r the game birds and small animals we know as w ild life . When the other m erits of this kind of program are ex amined, we find the produc tive activity fillin g a need of providing a means fo r a man and his fam ily earning a living from land once thought to he nearly worthless. It offers trees help environment the American fam ily a chance to get acquainted with nature and the woodsy smell of the old-tim e holidays. There are cases where a rti fic ia l trees better f ill the need and this is where they should be used. Persons who live in small apartments may nor have room for a conventional tree and can spare only a mantle o r tabletop. Small trees fo r this purpose are not readily available at resonable prices. Growers cannot afford to sell small trees fo r less than the mote standard sizes ones so tills leaves a good place (or the a rtific ia l tree to come Into use. The Christmas tree that has served well during the holi days should he re-cycled tor maximum benefit at the home of the user. The boughs and needles can be chopped or ground into compost for use in Improving the soil and the small trunk may be used as a stake o r If you mustdispose The a rtific ia l tree, If used according to all salety pre cautions, Is probably tlie better on fo r persons who tire of shopping for anewtiee each year. Properly packed and cared fo r to keep ta r nishing vapors and dust away, this kind of tree w ill last for years In areas where natural trees are not easily grown and their use would deplete a forest area.
