Myers told a regional meet ing of student councils at Cleveland High School that if the legislature sets the special election fo r January 18th, as anticipated, the deadline for registration w ill hepecember 18th. Myers said there may be as many as lOO.UOO of the newly enfranchised 18 to 21-year- olds s till unregistered tn o re - gon. " I know many of these young people aren’ t planning to reg ister until just before the p ri mary election nextM ay," My ers said, "butunless they reg ister soon, they won’ t be able to vote on those Im nortant tax treasures in January." Myers also said that if tliese potential new voters wait until next spring to register tt w ill put an ’ ’ extraordianry strain on our county clerks andtheir re g is tra rs ." Denise Ann Griffith, a junior at Grant High School is the daughter of Mr. and Ms. Robert Giffirh. She is a member of the National Honor Society and would like to be a gymnastic tea- cher. -scholar-athletes w ill be selected from the sophomore classes. Mel Fox, club athletic d ire c to r, said the awards pro gram was developed by a special community service committee appointed by the club’ s trustees. The commit tee's purpose. Fox said, is to "prom ote greater rapport between the community and club.” Guidelines from the club call on each school to select the outstanding sophomore boy o r g irl " in accordance with its own c rite ria fo r determin ing the highest qualification combining athletic ability, scholarship and character." In line with the club’ s own policies, the scholar-athlete selection cannot be restricted by race, color o r creed. Elgin B a y lo r retires Elgin Baylor of the LosA n- geles Lakers announced his retirem ent last week. Hewtll remain with the Lakers in a scouting and public relations capactiy. He w ill also be a TV analyst on the college basket ball game of the week. Emcee at Wednesday night’ s dinner was C.M.
