Page 8 Rartland/ONerver Thursday, Sept. 30, 1971 Black Oppression in South Africa By Joel Skidmore Despite government claim s to the contrary, the liberation struggle of oppressed South A fricans continues to be waged. In a series of recent reprisals, the government in voked its Te rr o r ism Act to a r rest 14 men in Natal Province and a prominent clergyman in Johannesburg. The 14 men, presently on tria l in the city of Pieterm ar itzburg, a re charged with "e n dangering the maintenance of law and order inSouth A fric a " by seeking to overthrow the Government "b y force of arms and with foreign assistance." They also are accused of re cruiting South Africans to undergo m ilita ry and political training and of harboring te r ro ris ts . The a rrest of the Very Rev. Gonville A. French-Peytagh, Anglican dean ofjohannes- burg, was followed by raids on church and student organiza tions to gain evidence fo r the indictment. The te rro ris m Act was firs t invoked in 19t»7 to a rre st 37 Namibians. It has been used frequently since then, most recently in the tria l of Winnie Mandela and 18 other mem bers of the A frican National Congress. It car ries, as max imum, the death penalty, with five years imprisonment as minimum. The 14 men who were fo r m ally remanded in the Magis tra te ’ s Court on June 10 were all members of the Unity Movement of South A frica, a group founded in 1943. Since then, many members nave been jailed or forces into exile. Your ticket to the big game: ^...including transportation Y ou want to see the big game So what do you do?
