Emanuel combat cancer Cobalt is one of the big guns in the war against cancer. Ten y e a r s ago, in 1 9 6 1 , E m a n u e l became the fir s t hospital I n O r e g o n to open a cobalt t h e r a p y department. D u r i n g 1970,7,694 treatments helped patients fight the disease. A Cobalt department is an ex pensive one to build and the per sonnel who s t a f f it must have h i g h I y-specialized, extensive education and experience. Opening the d e p a r t m e n t at Emanuel, i n o t-fo r-p ro fit h o s p i t a l , meant that this im portant means of combatting cancer would be available to a lot of patients at the lowest possible cost. Having the department in a hospital a l s o offers convience to the referring physician a n d a s s u r e s him fast access to Emanuel’ s pathology, medical r e c o r d s and tumor registry service. The d e c i s i o n to build the department also Included plans fo r a n t i c I p a t e d expansion. O riginal r e m o d e l i n g of the hospital basement fo r cobalt in cluded additional space to meet future needs. Remodeling had to provide necessary shielding for the beams of the machines — an important requirement, gove ren od by rig id regulations. The en tire cobalt-therapy department Below gtcund 1 e ye 1. P rim ary beams on the machines can point only toward the flo o r or toward the earth-backed outside founda tion. Elsewhere, concrete walls more than two feet thick b l o c k scattered radiation. Providing all of this special construction at ing, of c o u r s e, was a m ajor economy measure. Then in 1968, the p l a n n e d expansion was completed. P art of t he original planning had also taken into consideration the h a lf-life of Cobalt 60. T h i s means that the 2,150-curie cobalt source in the o r ig in a 1 ’ ’work horse" unit through which some 80 trillio n gamma-ray producing atoms disintegrate e a c h second to k ill cancer cells— must be re placed about every five y e a r s , after atomic disinteration has halved its output. When the departme: t was ex panded, a new cobalt machine was a d d e d that perm its treating patients at closer distances— use ful in dealing with cancers of the head and neck. The second unit required a less powerful cobalt source because of the s h o t t e r treatment distance— and so th e $13,400 piece of cobalt from th e o r i g i n a l machine, by then only half as strong as it had been when it was new. was transferred to the new machine where itwould serve patients’ need fo r five addi tional years. (The cobalt source is about the size of t h r e e dimes stacked to gether. It is housed in a welded steel jacket within a tungsten and lead ball which weighs more than 1 1/2 tons.) Patients served by the unit range from the very young to the very old. Average length of treat ment time is about 4 1/2 minutes. Cobalt is b a s ic a lly an ' ’ Outpatient" department-people can live at home and just coine in fo r treatments. Patients are watched constantly while under the machine. In the original therapy room built in 1961 attendants watch patients thi ough an 8 x 12 inch rectangle of lead glass four inches thick. In the second therapy room, a closed c irc u it television camera focuses d ire ctly on the patient, so that attendants at the central deskin the department can watch both patients at once. Each fam ily is ask ed to bring a favorite dessert.... large enough to serve the mem bers of that fam ily. Coffee and punch w ill be provided. E a c h fam ily is also asked to bring enough plates, cups, napkins and silverware fo r each member of the fam ily. A fte r supper several agencies w ill explain th e ir program to all present. This w ill be anoth e r good time to get together and have fun with some of the other fam ilies from your center and also learn about other agencies in the community. Maybe music can, too. Some people with asthma su ffe r from sudden, severe at tacks. They feel as if they are choking and cannot get enough a ir to breathe. The experience can be te rrify in g , especially fo r young children. If a doctor can locate the ir r ita n t that is the source of the allergy, desensitizing in jections can be administered. And further attacks can be alle viated or prevented. In addition to medication, an unusual approach to help asth matic children is underway at the National Jewish Hospital and Re search Center in Denver. Some of the children there have had asthma all their lives. Because of their illness, their emotion al and physical development - often lags behind that of other youngsters their age. Music the rapy is spurring th e ir progress. The children learn to make m u s ic themselves, n o t just listen to it . With a special in structor, children start off with patty cake and then go on to singing, drum s, and recorder. Even pre-schoolers learn to set down on paper the rhythm, and melodies they hear fir s t. Then they w rite their own. Music makes good vibrations. It does more fo r asthmatic - children. Attempts at rhythm, harmony, and coordination build endurance, develop m u s c le strength, and improve breath control as well as posture.And the youngsters also learn to create and accomplish. Music is an unusual— not standard — treatment fo r asthma.
