SALEM — (Special) - Fraud In connection with unemployment insurance benefits and taxes was kept to a minimum during the fourth quarter of 1970, even though claims were more nu merous this year («cause of the liigh unemployment, the Em p lo y m e n t Division reported here. The low Incidence of fraudulent claim s continued and was possible («cause of the constant vigilance of local office claims personnel, the Fraud in vestigation unit of the Benefits section and by Tax Section audi tors, the Division said. Fourth quarter fraud control activity b r o u g h t recommen dations. for prosecution of 13 new cases, bringing the total n u m b e r of cases to 47. The cases recommended for prose cution were less than one-tenth of one percent of the total number of claim determinations made during the fourth quarter, the Employment Division said. Ten cases were completed th rin g the quarter witli these results; two convictions and two dism issals in Multnomah coun ty; one conviction in Marion county; one conviction in Des chutes county; one conviction In Josephine county; one conviction in Douglas county; one dism iss al in Clatsop county and one conviction in Wasco county. The courts ordered restitu tions In six cases; Imposed fines ranging from >100 to >150 in two cases; set probationary periods of from six months to three years in seven cases; o r dered one 30-day sentence sus pended; ordered one 10-day s e n te n c e suspended; imposed one 30-day sentence; imposed another 30 days of a six-month sentence and Imposed a one-day sentence In one case. A total of 154 determinations were written in which 1,705 cal endar weeks were disqualified for w illfu l false statements or misrepresentation in order to obtain unemployment insurance («neflts. D u r in g the fourth quarter >18,738.45 was recov ered by the Employment D ivi sion in overpayment and during 1970 a total of >62,887.29 was recovered. He graduated from Jefferson High School in 1961 and was a member of the championship teams of the Mel Renfro days. He entered the Un iv e rs ity of Oregon and was a m e m b e r of the football team where he was an outstanding de fensive halfback, from 1961-65.
