A Code of Conduct In 1858 The Carson, P lrle and C o m p a n y of Chicago wrote a code of conduct for Its four em ployees: "Store must be open from 6 a.m . to 9 p.m. the year round. Store must be swept; counter base and showcases dusted, la m p s trim m ed, filled and chimneys cleaned; pens made; doors and windows opened; a pall of water, also a bucket of coal brought In before breakfast (If there Is tim e to do so and attend to customers who call). "Store must not be opened on the Sabbath, unless necessary to do, and then only for a few min utes. "The employee who Is In the habit of smoking Spanish cigars, being shaved at the barber shop, going to dances and other places of amusement, w ill surely give his employer reason to be sus picious of his Integrity and honesty. "Each employee must pay not less than $5.00 per year to the church and must attend Sunday School regularly. "Men employees (who are slngie) are given one evening a week for courting and two If they go to prayer meeting. "A fter fourteen hours of work In the store, the leisure hours should be spent mostly In read ing." These rules surely sound hu morous to us today. What busl- t------ I (Unirci) of D our I tClioire M c K in n e y h o s t s f a s h io n s h o w REV. T.L. S T R A Y H A N D ness would dare to interfere with th e private lives of Its em ployees like this? Do you have a code of conduct for yourself, your children, those committed to your care? If so, maybe some of these rules could be included In your code. Those who live without a standard have no guide. Those who live by the rules live longer, healthier and happier.
