THE MORNING OREGONIAN, FRIDAY, OCTOBER 20, 1922 1 MOVE FOR DISABLED VEtERMS OPPOSED Ordinance to Transfer Men Stirs Up Protests. COUNCIL TO HEAR VIEWS Delegates From Many Organiza tions to Attend Session at 3 o'clock. Protests will buzz about the ears of the city commissioners when they meet in special session at 2 P. M. today to consider the passage of an ordinance authorizing the ad mission of ex-service tubercular pa tients to the Hahnemann hospital. Many organizations will join in the protest, since it means removal of ex-service men now stationed at the Pierce sanitarium, Just outside the city limits, and their hospital ization at the Hahnemann institu tion. The change is against the wishes of the patients themselves. From another angle it was de clared the move is highly undesir able, since, it was said by the pro testants that the door will be opened to the influx into the city of other tubercular patients, a sit uation now proscribed by city ordi nance. Private Wing Planned. Proponents of the transfer say that one wing of the Hahnemann hospital may be sealed off and used exclusively for tubercular patients. But it is urged by opponents that If this is done in the case of this one hospital the way will be opened for all other hospitals in the city to do likewise and, moreover, it was Bald, new tubercular institutions may be opened within the city lim its at once. Mrs. George L. Williams, presi dent of the disabled veterans' aux iliary; Mrs. J. A. Reed, president of the Spanish War Veterans' aux iliary; representatives of the Port land Woman's club. Miss Viola Orthschild, president of the Parent Teacher association, Mrs. C. B. Sim mons and Mrs. J. G. Gillingham are among the women who will attend the council meeting today. and urge that the contemplated change be not made. Legion to Protest. Others who will appear are Barge Leonard, Maurice Crumpa'cker and John C. Lane, representing the American Legion, and R. A. Sawyer. Those who lodge their protests with the commissioners will be backed up by a resolution adopted unani mously by the ex-service men at the Pierce institution asking that the change be not made. The resolution follows: "Wo have carefully talked this matter over and have unanimously decided that none of us wish to be transferred to the Hahnemman hospital for the . rea Bons enumerated below: First Lack of fresh air; as the Hannemann hospital is known to be lo cated close- to the' river front, border ing on the manufacturing district where the river., fog envelops the place and the air is heavily laden with dust: also tlie limitation of space makes it im possible for' the man who is able to be out of bed to take the proper exercise under the advice of competent tuber culous experts. Law Is Brought Up. Second Some years ago the city council passed an order to the effect that no tubercular patients could be hospitalized within the city limits of Portland. In our opinion the situation Is in no wa changed, and, in fact, is much worse than 10 years ago, and we can see no reason why an ordinance al lowing on1;- ex-service men to be hos pitalized in the city limits should be passed at this time for the convenience1 of the Veterans bureau or so-called American Legion officials, who, we be- j lieve, are actuated in this movement under the advice of several local doc tors interested in Hahnemann hospital; furthermore we are advised that a con ference is pending between an authorized Veterans' bureau representative and & district manager of the Veterans' bureau of Seattle on October 25. At this time the propped lease 6f the Pierce sana torium wil' be taken up and disposed of officially and we can see no reason for the undue haste of calling a special meeting oi the council within 24 hours after the ammendment is proposed, in asmuch as this matter has been "hang ing fire'' for more than eight months. BIG CONVENTION SOUGHT World Conference of Endeavorers in 1925 Wanted in Portland. Efforts will be made to bring the World's Christian Endeavor conven tion to Portland in 1925 as the re sult of action taken at the luncheon of the Progressive Business Men's club at the Benson hotel yesterday noon. The club voted for the appoint ment of a committee to take im mediate steps for the get of that Judge Morrow, who intro duced the resolution, expressed the belief that the gathering could be had for this city by prompt action. He said that the convention would mean the bringing of delegates here from all over the world. Dr. Thomas J. Villers gave an il lustrated lecture on the near east. Eugene Boy Wins Navy Honors.
