H. GREGORY. Fourteen thousand roaring fans, who packed the ball park yesterday to see the Beavers take two more from San Francisco, instead saw the Seals snap back into thei chesty stride and win both ends the double-header. The scores were 5 to 4 in 10 in nings of a corking pitchers' battle between Leverenz and Oliver Mitchell, and 6 to 2. Th Seals made an anti-climax of the Beaver winning streak, but Portland won the series, four games to three. Likewise it's a satisfaction to know that the home boys cost the Seals one game, of the 2 -game lead they held' over the Vernon Tigers a week ago. As the Tigers won twice from Sacramento yester day, they now are only 1 games behind. What the Beavers set out to do in this series was to drag down the Seals within reaching distance for the Tigers. "Well, they did it. The rest is up to Vernon. Not so worse at all. ' Kamm Breaks Up Day. "Willie Kamm broke up the first game yesterday with a ?100,000 home run in the 10th inning. In the second game the Portland in field went haywire and splattered errors all over the place In three innings after two were out. Not one of the Seals" six runs was earned, all of them being scored after Sutherland had afforded easy chances to retire the side. In the first game Leverenz and Oliver Mitchell went into the tenth with the score at four-all after nine as spectacular innings as ever were played. Shoe-string catches, great throws that nipped runners, two sparkling double plays by the Bea vers and a home run by Charley High in the sixth with Poole on base, tying up the score, had made It a memorable struggle. But with one Seal dead in the tenth, Leverenz served Willie Kamm fat ball and Willie lofted it far over the right-field fence. That homer was the ball game. The Bea vers died hard in their half, Brazlll singling with one gonej but Hale forced him and Poole ended it with a fly to center. Kelly Gets Life. The Seals opened as if they would annihilate Leverena, .but after the third the veteran had them swing ing like gates until the tenth. They scored one in the' first after Mc Cann's poor throw gave Kelly life. Valla forced him, - but Kamm ad vanced Valla with a single and Fill son brought him in with a ripping drive to center. In the third the Seals did their stuff again for three more runs on Kelly's walk, a sacrifice, Kamm's single and R. Miller's double that scored both runners. Miller tallied on Rhyne's single when Fuhrman dropped Gressett's beautiful peg home. There, was some excuse for the rror, for Miller threw his ton of weight against Fuhrman as he caught the ball. The Beavers lit 'nto Oliver Mitchell for a pair in the first on Wolfer's walk and successive singles by Brazill, Hale and High, but Mitchell held them then until the sixth, when Charley High potted a curve ball over the fence with, Poole ahead of him and tied the score. Beaver Infield Explodes. In the second game Courtney had fine support, whereas the Portland infield exploded with a loud plop in the fourth and again in the fifth. In the fourth, with two out, Kamm gained first on McCann's boot. Elli son singled infield and O'Connell walked, but Rhyne hit a roller at McCann. who flipped to Brazill for a force play on O'Connell. They had him too, but Brazill dropped the pel let after the umpire had waved O'Connell out, and Kamm scored. In the fifth Agnew singled, but got nowhere until two were gone. Then on an attempted delayed steal he was caught five feet off second, Fuhrman to Sutherland to McCann, but this time McCann dropped the ball. Then Kamm singled, Ellison douhled and O'Connell singled In field for a total of four. The Seals' sixth tally counted in the ninth, again after two were out and chances had been given to retire the side, when Kilduff and Valla pulled a. double steel, Kilduff tally ing. . . The Beavers shoved off last night for Sacramento minus the services of Joe Sargent. Joe was suspended for ten days, Manager Middleton an nounced, for breaking training rules. Bill Kenworthy, the iron duke, made good his assertion that he could mashie a golf ball over the left or center field fence. With the schoolhouse as his target he lammed four in a row so high and so far that they'll never be seen again. Yesterday's scores: Innings pitched. Shea 1 2-3. Charge de feat to Shea. Base on Balls by Hoyt in Sixth Starts Team Down Hill and St. Louis to Victory. , BT HARRT NEWMAN. fBy Chicago Tribune Leased Wire.) ST. LOUIS, Mo., Sept. 17. The Browns trounced the New York Yankees this afternoon at Sports man park by the score of & to 1, and there is nor alibi to offer for the defeat. There wasn't a pop bottle thrown, and except for a short pe riod when the fans In left center field bleachers started to wave handkerchiefs while McMillan wag at bat there -gaasn't a trace of any thing untoward from, the 32,000 spectators. A base on balls by Waits Hoyt in the sixth started the Yanks on the down grade. They were leading by one run at the time as a result of a slam over the right field wall by Babe Ruth, when suddenly Young Hoyt lost all sense f direction at the. start of the inning and passed the usually weak-hitting Eddie Foster. Everything went wrong lor tne Yanks after that, and before the smoke had cleared away the Browns had three runs and the game' on ice. Hubert Pruett, the frail ex-col- legiate southpaw of Kohl s clan, had the Yanks doing about as he pleased. Ruth s clout over the fence was th only real punch off his offerings. Up to the ninth inning only three hits were all the New Yorkers could gather. In the last frame Pruett eased up and the Yanks managed to get two men on with singles, bu Hubert tightened and put on some extra speed to get Schang on strikes. Sam Jones relieved . Hoyt in th eighth and was a failure. Foster walked, but went out stealing be fore Sisler also walked. Then Jones grooved one and Williams banged out his 39th homer of the season, sending Sisler In ahead of him Jacobson singled, but was forced oy jyicManus. Severeid also singled, but Gerber ended the inning by otriKing out. New York St. Lou!
