16 THE MORNING OREGONIAN. FRIDAY? JULY 21, 1923 RADIO DANCE MUSIC DUE PORTLAND HOTEL ORCHES TRA TO GIVE PROGRAMME. Broadcasting Set W ill Be in Good Orders, Says Snperintend i ent of Plant. Excellent dance music by Herman i Kenin's Portland hotel orchestra, vocal solos by Miss Harriet Leach, I soprano, and several instrumental solos by members of the orchestra form the radio programme which will be broadcast from The Orego nian tower tonight, between 8 and 9 o'clock. Assurance that the broadcasting Bet would be in perfect order and with the same greatly increased vol ume obtained during the past two concerts, was given last night by J. B. Weed of the Shipowners' Radio Service,' who will superintend the broadcasting tonight. Unless some thing unexpected happens, he said, after testing out last night, the set will continue to send out the radio entertainment in almost perfect form. Miss Harriet Leach, soprano, who Bang for radio in The Oregonian tower several weeks ago, and who delighted thousands of listeners with her clear, musical voice, will contribute four solos to the pro gramme.. Miss Leach will sing twice before the orchestra concert begins and twice more between numbers. She will be assisted at the piano by Mrs. Percy Lewis. Del Porter, whose saxophone playing is one of the big features of Herman Kenin's orchestra, will also play a solo tonight. His se lection is "Kiss Me Again," which be played with orchestra accom paniment. Herman Kenin, director of the orchestra, which is playing a se ries of Friday night concerts for The Oregonian, will play a violin solo. He has played several solos before in connection with the con , certs of his orchestra and his solos have always been applauded vigor ously. His selection this time is "Smoke Rings," and he will be ac companied at the piano by LeRoy Adams. Some of the orchestra numbers, which will be played are "Serenade Blues," "Kicky Koo," "Over Noth ing at All," "Hot Lips" and "Night." The remaining time will be taken up in playing as many requested numbers as possible. I EPISCOPALS TO FINISH CON FERENCE FRIDAY. Business Session and Election of Officers for Coming Year to Be Held.' OREGON CITY, Or., July 20.t 6pecial.) The Episcopalian confer ence, which is being held in Glad stone park, will be closed Friday night with a business meeting and election of officers for the coming year. In an address on "The Narcotic Evil, Its Curse and Its Cure." Canon W. H. Bliss, rector of the Trinity church of Seattle and father of the White Cross league, declared that the so-called drug habit is not a habit, but a 'disease. ; Rev. Mr. Bliss advanced the theory that the taking of the drugs sets up a natural antidote in the body. This antidote, the speaker said, demands the constant use of the drug to counteract it, and it is the antidote and not the drug that causes the craving. He also stated that it is this antidote which poisons the body. The canon stated that there is an erroneous opinion that prostitu tion creates drug addicts, and de clared that the real fact is that the use of the drug creates prosti tution. He said that as the craving of the victim grows greater and greater, the expense attached to the use of the drug grows in propor tion to the use and that the victim then resorts to any means to ob tain the price. Rev. Mr. Bliss stated that in this country alone there are at present more than 20,000 persons engaged in the narcotic traffic and that, ac cording to figures obtained from the police, there are in the city of Port land about 6000 addicts. FRUIT CHUBS ACTIVE NORTHWEST PRODUCTS FACE KEEN COMPETITION. Crops in East Indicate Lowe: Prices in That Region That Quality Must Overcome. E. A. Clark, president of the King's Food Products -Manufacturing company, returned yesterday from an extended trip into the mid dle western and eastern fruit areas, where he investigated the markets for western fruit products and familiarized himself with the stand ard of fruit products of the east with which the western grower, canner and packer has to compete. Mr. Clark said that the fruit crops are the best that have been grown in years and that the west ern concerns will have to maintain strictly their high standards of production in order to meet with their former reception by eastern jobbers. "The northwest packers will have to uphold their standards of 'qual ity packing' to compete with the low prices of the east," said Mr. Clark. "Our only hope is in the quality of our product. From my talks with the principal jobbers I gathered that the jobbers are pur chasing only the staples which they know they can sell. The Jobbers believe that things are at a . new normal, but they are not going to "stay there. They are all conserva tive in their buying." BEACON STREET FAVORED South Portland Bridge Committee Decides on Site for Span. At a meeting of a sub-committee of representatives from southeast ern districts which has been inves tigating sites lor the proposed bridge across the Willamette river it was decided last night that the most favorable site was the line running on Grover street, with the approach on Kelly street on the west side, and on the east side the line of Beacon street with the ap proach on Beacon. It was figured that the bridge would be 3635 feet long, 54 feet wide, allowing 36 feet roadway and four lines of traffic. For Women A special subscription offer is made on the Delineator.
