Capture Following Mishap Ends Exciting Chase. EXTRAORDINARY OPPORTUNITIES TO SAVE ON SUMMER APPAREL AND HOME NEEDS X LIMIT FINE IS IMPOSED Jack Campbell of The Dalles Serv ing Out $400 Levy; little Dep uty Bit "Hard-Boiled." Chased three miles by P. V. Rex ford, motorcycle deputy sheriff, whose speedometer registered 50 miles an hour, without the officer gaining a foot on his quarry. Jack Campbell of The Dalles was not captured yesterday afternoon until he struck and Injured George Pullen, 19-year-old Gresham lad, near Ruby crtation on the Base Line road, and skidded to a standstill. District Jiga Delch, before whom Campbell was taken by George Gra ham, deputy district attorney, fined Campbell J4-00 a Multnomah county record in a speed case. Campbell is serving out the tine at the rate of $2 a day in the county jail. Campbell was driving a six-cylinder automobile and Deputy Sheriff Rexford had a sidecar to his motor cycle, which held down his speed to 6-0 miles an. hour. George Nosker of The Dalles and two men whose names the driver did not know were In the machine with Campbell at the timer of the accident. Ao "Warning- Given Boys. The Injured youth, who was treated at th county jail, was on his way to take a swim, in company with his brother, Byi-on Pullen, Al bert Stockton and Alfred Brunner of Gresham and Glenn Spath of Sea side. Th boys were walking' on the left side of the road, facing oncom ing traffic. George Pullen said he had no warning of the machine com ing up from the- rear, either horn or shout. He was tasocked several yards and his left shoulder and elbow and right leg were badly bruised and lacerated. No bones were broken. Campbell, who works In a garage in The Dalles, has a wife and five children in that city. He said he was buying, but had not yet paid for the machine he was driving. Though the deputy sheriff said he could smell liquor on the breath of men In the auto, Campbell denied that anyone in the party had been drinking. He said he did not think he was going more than 35 miles an hour, though he "might have gone BO down hill." He declared that he was forced to pass a truck at the time he hit the boy and had slowed t,o about 15 miles an hour. Auto on Wrong- Side. Deputy Riexlord ipaced off the tire marks of the machine showing that It had skidded 75 feet before it hit the young man. and continued 60 feet beyond off the pavement in the grass and dirt. The accident was at the grade crossing at Ruby station. When Campbell auto struck the youth the driver clearly was on the wrong side of the road, according to witnesses. Campbell said he was preparing to take the boy to a Portland hos pital when, the deputy arrived on the scene. He complained that Rexford was- "a little hard-boiled The deputy sheriff, who is about one-third the stature of Campbell, conceded that. He declared he thought circumstances warranted it. He brought the entire party to the county jail about 4 o'clock. Camp bell's companions were released after sentence was passed. The driver pleaded guilty to exceeding the speed limit. Judge Delch said he thought a J too fine was lenient. FIRE PRECAUTIONS ASKED Inspector of Electric Wiring and Elevators Urged Upon City. The establishment of a position of inspector of electric wiring and elevators was urged yesterday (at a meeting of the committees on the building code. An Inspection of the buildings within the fire district would disclose that every other structure had defective wiring, ac cording to Edward Grenfell, fire marshal, who attended the meeting. The committee hopes to so change the building code as to make im possible a repetition of the death of James E. Baldwin, fireman, who was killed a fortnight ago through defective wiring in a burning build ing. The Chamber "of Commerce build ing code revision committee' also met In the offices of Commissioner Barbur. Mayor Baker and Commis sioners Pier and Bigelow were present. Thequestion of bricks for use In chimneys was discussed. s s 8- Packing Company Starts, ESTACADA, Or., July 6. (Spe cial.)
