23 TITE MORNING OREGOXIAN, THURSDAY, JULY 6, 1923 BONDS ST HIEH-fiEGORDS V - ' lOltt LIBERTY ISSUES AT NEW TOP MARKS. Foreign Government Loans Ir regular Leading Kails One to Two Points Higher. NEW YORK, July 5. Four of the lib erty issues made new high records in to day's bond market, the 3s at 100.50. first 4s at 100.24. second 414s at 100.11 and fourth 4Via at 1U0.3S. In thevar!ed list of foreign govern ment loans mixed changes were shown. Netherlands tie rose one point, with mod " erate gains in Copenhagen 5s and Chi nese railway us, but Mexican 4s and 5s were distinctly heavy, as also were Cuba republic 4a and Bio do Janeiro 8s. Gains ranging from 1 to almost 2 points were made by a number of under lying mortgages of the domestic railway group, notabiy Illinois Central refunding 4, Canadian Northern 6s, Atchison 4a, St. Paul convertible refunding 4s and Northern Pacific 4s. Total sales, par value, aggregated $11,861,000. The one new corporate offering of the day of more than nominal size was the f 20, 000,000 B. F. Goodrich 25-year 614 per cent gold bond issue, which was of fered at 97 and interest and soon was oversubscribed. Trading iif the stock market today was dull and almost devoid of feature, aside from the pressure directed against sev eral of the speculative favorites, notabiy foreign oils. Mexican Petroleum and the "A" and "B" issues of Pan-American Petroleum were under constant fire at' extreme losses of 6 to 12 points. Selling of those shares was accompanied by out of town reports and later from local sources, whioh revived familiar ' state ments of salt water damage. There were intimations also that rela tions between Washington and Mexico City had become strained over the ques i tion of recognition and the remission or reduction of oil export taxes, but in nJ authoritative quarter were these reports credited. The 'acute heaviness of Mexicans w-is the more striking from the strength dis played by a majority' of the domestic oils. Chief among these were Associated Pacific, Cosden and California Petro leum, in which'final quotations showed gains of 1 to almost 5 points. The most hopeful development of the session was the firmness of rails, many of that group registering gross gainsof 1 to 2 points on covering of short coh- tracts, prompted in part by the more en couraging aspects of the strike situation. Pools were, active in selected special ties and several of the miscellaneousdi vision established highest prices of ins year. Coca Cola, Malihson and Du Pont, 'the latter at a further temporary gain of 6 points, were , among the conspicuous features of the day's professional opera tions. Sales amounted t 5S5,000 shares. Progressive ease was shown by the money market, call loans dropping from 4 to 414 per cent at mid-day and to 4 per cent in -the last hour. Two to three months' loans on a 4 per cent basis were again privately negotiated, but the open rate was 41i per cent. 'Contusing conditions marked t:.e day's active dealings in foreign exchange. Ot all the more important rates British bills alone were strong, rising 214 cents over Monday's closing figures. Allied lil!w were lower by about 10 to 20 points, the Dutch rate rising 15 points, withthe Danish rate and Norwegian and Swedisn remittances forfeiting 15 points each. iJt the minor exchanges the Greek rate again lost ground, declining almost 30 points. I would jump in the , water, get chilled and then climb back on the bank and roast again. . , " Jesse R. Lasswell, of the Commercial Bank df Oakland, Or., was in Portland yesterday. He spent a part of his time visiting with friends among the loca. bankers. Southern Oregon has been ex tremely hot, he declared, and he 1 somewhat relieved to come hero, where, despite the fact that Portland people are complaining, he found things quite comfortable. 1 L.M. Toss, vice-president of the First National Bank of Bend, was in Portland yesterday and conferred with officials of the Northwestern National bank. He reported hot weather, heavy lumber busi ness and good crop prospects for the sec. tion from which he comes. E. E. Wist, cashier of the First Na tional Bank of Scappoose, motored Portland yesterday and spent a short time transacting business. He declared STcappoose is one of the most, .prosperous towns in the state. CHICAGO, July 5. Auspicious weather conditions on both sides of the Canadian boundary in the spring crop Jielt had a bearish influence today on the wheat market here ani so, likewise, did late reports from Minneapolis that flour business had been cut in two. Prices closed nervous at the same as Monday's -finish to"lc lower.wlth September $L16 to $1.16, and December $1.19 to $1.19. Corn gained c and oats a shade to c. la provisions the outcome was 12c 10 t-o aeciiner Wheat fluctuated rapidly" within a range of about 1C, but averaged lower. Despite a etrone: rally , after the early break, the selling side had the advan tage throughout the greater part' ot the day lareelv because, little was heard regarding black, rust in the. northwest, temperatures generally being against its rapid development- lead ing crop expert was quoted to the effeS that the lateness of the rust had im proved crop chances. 9 Export demand for wheat was de scribed as slow, except that a little busi ness was done with Great Britain. Nev erthless. New Orleans was outbid by Chicago 23c for new wheat at vari ous points in Illinois and was getting the balk of the light country offerings in the west ana soutnwest. Movement of sup plies on ocean passage showed an in crease of 3,656,000 bushels for last week and besides a break In foreign exchange rates tended more or less to restrict purchasing for Europe. Prices for corn and oats displayed con siderable strength. Need of rain in Im portant 'corn-producing territory was noted and some export buying of corn was done here. - - Provisions responded to changes in the hog market, declniing when hog values lost an early advan.ee. The Chicago grain letter received yes terday by the Overbeck & Cooke- com pany of Portland fellows: Wheat Trade was small and well bal anced and the market made little head way in either . direction. The advances yesterday in Winnipeg, Liverpool and Buenos Aires, which lacked explanation, were offset by favorable weather condi tions over the entire spring wheat belt both sides of the international line. In addition, threshing returns showed better average yields of winter wheat than have been reported recently, giving rise to the belief that the crop in the northern part of the belt will largely make up for the losses in soflthern dis- i tricts. Advices from he seaboard claimed no indication of a revival in export trade yet. With the movement of new , wheat about to get Sinder way and the prospective demand uncertain, there will ; be lPttle incentive to work for higher prices, unless actual and important dam- 1 age occurs in the northwest. Corn Independent strength was again displayed, accompanied by a much ' broader outside demand.: The continued 1 strength In the cash market, with do-1 mestic and export interests actively bid- 1 ding for spot offerings, was a contribut ing factor. Crop reports average quite : favorable, although many students of conditions are looking for higher priceB , based on the belief that it is to be a t dry summer and a short corn crop. Coun- i try offerings to arrive were- reported I light, even after the advance. ! Oats followed -the trend of corn , in a . small way, with the close only frac tionally changed. The feature of the trade was the buying of July against sales of September by elevator interests. 1 Tne casn aemana was quite good ana . prices firm. Crop reports show some improvement as a result of recent favor- I able weather conditions, but it is con- I ceded that a great deal of damage has 1 already been done. ! Rye Increased hedging pressure found the demand inadequate and resulted in lower prices. Cash rye was steady, with a sale of No." 3 at . cent over July price. -, Leading futures ranged as follows: r WHEAT. Open. High. . Low. Close.
