THE MORNING OREGOXIAX,' WEDNESDAY, APRIL 10. 1022 ! ! MANY SAID TO QUIT IN SUPREME HOUfi Evangelist Relates Story of Paul's Shipwreck. DESCRIPTION IS VIVID How Apostle Worked So . That ( Others Slight Not Suffer Is Minister's Topic. ' The attitude of tho 276 people who were shipwrecked with the Apostle Paul in the Mediterranean sea and cast upon the shores of the island of Melita, toward Paul after he was bit ten by a poisonous adder, furnished Ir. Georgre Wood Anderson, evange list, with abundant material for one of the most striking' sermons he has sriven during the united gospel cru eade. His subject was "Picking Up Sticks." A vivid description of the hurri cane which swept over the sea and of the shipwreck which followed, formed the introduction to the ser mon. Then the crusader told how Paul, like a true Christian, had for gotten his condition and the experi ences through which he had just passed, and how he busied himself picking up sticks and laying them on the fire in order that others might not suffer from cold and exposure. People Are Startled. "Once when Paul was throwing fuel upon the fire the people were startled to see him suddenly shake his hand in an effort to free him self from a poisonous viper that had struck its fangs into his flesh," Dr. Anderson said. "The watching people fell hack, for they knew that the sting of such adders meant certain and sudden death. Watching their Denelactor shake the serpent into the fire, these people, wise in their own conceits, came to a conclusion. "One of the easiest things In this world for any person to do is to come to a conclusion. Beholding Paul s misfortune these people shook their heads knowingly and said, 'He Is a murderer." ow the bite of serpent revealed a record of blood shed and murder was not explained by these critics. "Paul heard their whispers. He saw the very ones whom he had been laboring so hard to help shrink back from his presence as though he were a pestilence. He heard their insinu ations and his sensitive soul quailed unaer tneir raise accusations. Paul Continues to Work. "Paul could have quit, but he kept on picking up sticks. The supreme hour in many men's lives was the one in which 'they quit-. Once they were most active in Christian work but they quit. Every new pastor knows about them." Delegations from the Parent-Teacher's associations and members of the official boards of the various Methodist churches of the city were guests at the service. This afternoon at 1:30 o'clock at the tabernacle. East Third and Irving streets, a special prayer service for the success of the crusade will be held under the direction of Mrs. James Ogden of the First Methodist church. Dr. Anderson to Speak. This service will be followed at 2:30 P. M. by the regular afternoon ' service, at which Dr. Anderson will preach. Yesterday E. Li. Wells mailed letters to all division prayer meeting chairmen urging them nbt to confine the cottage prayer meet ings to Methodist homes or to mem bers of the church. He suggested that an effort be made especially to invite outside denominations. Tonight will be "young crusader's night" at the tabernacle. All high .school boys have been invited, and also the order of De Molay and the Hi T club. Dr. Anderson will answer the spiritualist teachers who have recently invaded America to night in a sermon on "Dreams and Ghosts". The service is at 7:30 P. M. and is open to the general public.
