For two weeks or more world flour markets have been an enigma to Puget sound millers. With wheat and flour advancing, cabled offers to Asia. from Dajren to Manila, have brought no response. ljOcal and Pacific .coast trade is good, though it absorbs but a small percentage of the output of Tacoma's ex port mills. This results from lowjstock and resumption of industry, notably log ging ana lumoenng. During recent weeks Pacific northwest wheats have advanced la cents a bushel and standard brands of flour 20 cents a barrel. No one knows whether there will be further advances, though grain condi tions seem bullish.'. These are high -spots of a review of flour market conditions given by General Man ager C. E. Curran of the Tacoma Grain company. . Mr. Curran oulined seemingly bullish wheat conditions as follows: The government crop repoPt for De cember gave the condition of winter wheat in the middle west as 60 per cent of normal.- Later news indicates greater damage from the long-continued drouth in Kansas, Oklahoma. Missouri all the middle west. Low temperatures have been followed by light rains which froze and covered the fields with ice. This situation has been developing six weeks. In 1917 I saw the northern half of .Kansas covered with sleet by two driving northeast' storms. They coated the fields with ice and killed every spear of wheat. Something like a repetition of that disaster seems to be now striking a large area of winter-wheat country. ' ' "News is scarce from Australia- and Argentina, where new crops are being har vested. What we. do hear is that latest crop conditions have reduced the prospec tive .nr.nliia In each countrv. Unless some improvement comes in world-crop condi tions wihln a lew days, tne inaications will be for somewhat higher prices." For some days there has been no selling of flour to Hongkong and Manila, Mr. Curran says. Those markets are appar ently stocked. Several months ago Austra lian flour oirerea stiir competition in those markets, local export flours being 2o cents ito 50 cents . a barrel out of line. This differential vanished about January 1. Tacoma Grain company made its last sales to Japan and cnina aDout two week ai.ro. Hard conditions - in foreign exchange have made it difficult for buyers In both Asia and Europe to finance large purchases. Much of the flour selling has consisted of small deals, each financed on its own basis. Recently exchange rates have improved and that helps. The situation from the millers' standpoint-is thus summed up by Mr. Curran: "During the first seven months of this crop year we have milled more flour than during all of the previous year. How ever, competitive conditions have been so fierce ss to make it impossible to make . nrnflt The margin above cost has been very slight if any. Figuring the costs of wheat, of labor, of transportation ana other factors entering into the price, of barrel of flour, the possible margin of nrnflt was somewhat below the recent- advance of 20 cents a barrel- It is hoped iA.ri!ustments over the world, in cluding more nearly" normal exchange rates, will give greater stability to tne Pacific Northwest flour trade during the last months of the crop year." State Grain Inspector Geehan estimates that about 25 per cent of last year's grain crop remains in the interior. IV a na- a Tr i list munjjBge i y0 CLOSED mortgage: Dated February 1, 1822.
