CHICAGO. Jan. 18. Wheat price showed an upward tendency today, chiefly as a result of prospective better European demand, together with talk of green bugs In Texas. Oklahoma and Kansas. The mark t closed unsettled, at the same as yesterday's finish to He higher: May. tl.1214 to $1.12. and July. $1.00 to fl.OO. Corn gained H to c. oats fin ished unchanged to tip, and provi sions at 2 Vc decline to a like advance. Wheat a vera eed hlgrher except for a brit perloa shortly after the opening. The main influence was that a liberal quantity of wheat on ocean pasaee and other amounts available for deferred ship ment was said to be ch an ping hands. Re ports of the presence of green bugs in the southwest attracted fair attention, but the effect of the news was lessened by asser tions that it ww too early fo. damage to develop. Corn and oats paralleled wheat. Ex porters were after corn and took 250. 000 bushels here. In provisions, packers' selling nullified an advance caused by an upturn in the value of hogs. The Chicago rraln letter received yes terday by the Overbeck ft Cooke company of Portland follows: Wheat The tendency was upward most of the day', but the market was compelled to digest a great dal of scattered selling, presumably in the way of liquidation. Al though the net change for the day was un important, there whs a much better feeling noticeable, especially as to the May posi tion. Reports of the presence of green bugs in parts of Kansss and Texas caused a little riurry in the July options, but the 1 effect was only temporary as it was con- , sidt-red too early in the season to become ! alarmed over such reports. Cash wht-at ' was in cood demand at all markets with j prices from 1 to 3 'cents higher. There I was more activity In export circles with ! sales for the day estimated at 1, 300.000 ; bushels, presumably Canadian grain and a j good part of it on the Oret-k order, 1 Torn Trade was of small proportions with the market maintaining a strong: tone j considering the Urge receipts and conse- j quent rash pressure. Ppot offerings were ' well taken care of at yesterday's basis to a t fhade higher. More bids were in the mp 1a et and additional bumnefes likely to he done. The value of corn from a feeding standpoint cannot be ignored, even though the contention Is made that the supply in the country Is excessive. Oats The trade was moderate featured bv a persistent commission house demand and buy in e credited to leading elevator in terests. The undertone was strong and selling pressure unimportant. p.ve Futures were firm, reflecting tne irrturn in wheat and buying by elevator ir ter-sts. There was some selling on the 4 pr wh'fh h d the spnenrsnce of SPARE RIB3. 8.57 8t7 Jan May 8.70 8.72 8.65 Cash prices were as follows: Wheat No. 2 hard, $1.11; No. 1 north ern, $1 30.
