Mis! 1 lira A. I Barbur. who entered city service as auditor 17 years ago, will retire from puolio life when his present term as city commissioner expires, July 1, 1925. This was made known yesterday when Commissioner Barbur told mem bers of the council that he was near ingr the stage in life when the cares and worries of official life become too strenuous. Us "I have had a Ionr fling at city ; service," he said, "'and I have always ; tried to give the best In me. I will continue to do this until my pres ent term expires; then I want to re- tire to private life." Mr. Barbur owns" a large cranberry marsh in Yashington and probably when he retires will take over the active management of this enterprise. At present the land is leased. Mr. Tier Also May Qnit. Sir. Barbur is not the only mem . her of the city council who will call it "emits" when present terms expire. . Commissioner Pier has informed . friends that he will not be a candi date for re-election In November. It has been rumored, however, that his son. Stanhope S. Pier, will be a candi- - date to fill the office now occupied ' by his father. Charles A. Bigelow, president of the council, is, expected to be a candi ; date for re-election next November, - although he has made no definite statement on this subject as yet. Commissioner Bigelow has served as acting mayor on a number of oc casions and although he has said that he dun not want to assume the ' task of "filling George Baker's shoes as mayor," it is believed in city hall circles that Mr. Bigelow would be quite willing to become mayor in the event that Mr. Baker should re tire to assume a higher position, such as that of governor. Mr. Mann In Mentioned. Commissioner Mann also has been mentioned as a possible successor to the mayor in the event the latter vacated his seat, but the head of the health and water bureau has said that he is quite satisfied with bis present birth However, if pressed, it is not believed that he would at tempt to "sidestep" the position. While it is too early in the game Hy for the aspirants to city commissioner berths to show themselves, there are several men who are said to be pre paring to enter the race next fall. Among these, it is reported, are ex City Commissioner Perkins and City Auditor Funk. T MAUIIIKI) VKTEKAXS GET 3 TO 4 DAYS' WORK. Portland Residents Again I'rged to Offer Chores; More Than 2000 Men of Family in Need. Approximately 100 residents of Port land tendered short-time Jobs, chores around home, to the public and Ameri can Legion employment bureaus yes terday, at 170 Fourth street. To these were instantly assigned married men who have registered for work. For three to four day they will have cash lor the grocer. But it is estimated that more than 2000 men of family are In need of such relief, and the plea that residents find a day or so of work for the applicants is insistently repeated. One ( man who came to the bureau yesterday had served with the Aus tralians at Gallipoli, though an Ameri. can. A bullet smashed his ankle, another bedded itself deep in his thigh, and a third entered his mouth, tear ing upward through bone and carti lage. Upon discharge he returned to his wife and children in the states, r.ecauxe the Australian government refused to pension all who dwell out. slils the empire he has received no aid from customary sources. They live in Portland. The dialogues at the bureau, when applicants are called In, are much the same. There are children at home, and often an Impending visit from the tork. i?ave for an occasional day's work the husband and father has been without employment all winter. Credit at the corner grocery Is exhausted. There is no novelty In the repeated coincidence of want and illness. "Vou advertised for short tim Jobs," said one, an ex-service man. "1 need a clay or two pretty bad. The folks " "Out of groceries?" "Out of everything. I came in here without breakfast, as far as that's concerned." "Out of wood?" "Yes." Offers of short-time Jobs should be telephoned direct to the two bureaus, both located at the Fourth-street ad dress. For the public employment bureau telephone Main 2766, and for the American Legion bureau call Main 5347. DRUG TRIAL DELAYED Pave IcIghtner Flies Demurrer, Saying Crime Is Xot Charged. Dave Lelghtner, alleged master mind of a druir smuggling coterie, postponed the day of reckoning yes terday when he filed In federal court a demurrer to the charge of narcotic law violations. Dismissal was asked on grounds that the Indictment does not charge a crime. With the seizure of $110,000 worth of drugs recently by the police, Lelghtner was arrested. It was de clared that he attempted to bribe a patrolman to permit the passage of an automobile carrying the fortune in morphine and cocaine. Three Jap anese who were arrested with him pleaded guilty and have begun serv ing sentences, ranging from nine to 13 months. ' A verdict of guilty was returned yesterday in federal- court against L. Dean Gage, also charged with vio lating the narcotic act. Judge Bean indicated that the convicted man would be sentenced next Thursday, though there was a possibility that defense attorney might file an appeal during the week.
