today was active and broad, a firm to
strong- ton pervading every division dur
ing the early and intermediate perioda
A1uch of the advance, which ranaed from
one to three polntta. waa canceled later,
however, on the unexpected rlae of cal
loans to 8"4 oer cent.
Equipments, oils, motors and metals
again were leaders, but rails, snipping
steels and food specialties participated In
more than moderate measure. The strength
of sugars was surprising In view of the
lower prlcea quoted for raw and refined
product a
Individual features of strength included
American Car, Pressed Steel Car, Ameri
ta Steel Foundries, Hallway Steel Spring,
Pullman. Haskell & Barker, Mexican
Petroeum. General Asphalt, common and
preferred. Mercantile Maine preferred and
the coppers and kindred issues. .
Among rails, trsnsoont Inentsls led with
Reading and other coalers, also St. Louis
Ac Southwestern preferred and several of
the Junior eastern issues. Further post
ponement of dividend paymente by the
Pittsburg, Cincinnati, Chicago e St. Louis
(Panhandle) indicated that earninga still
leave much, to be desired.
Miscellaneous specialties wera repre
sented by textiles, namely American
Woolen, duett I'eabody. Manhattan Shirt,
and Phillips Jones, together with chemi
cals, leathers and mution picture issuea
Hales were &."), OO0 shares.
Foreign exchange reacted to the more
uncertain political advices from abroad,
the Paris rate b. In the only allied remit
tance to show firmness. Italian bllla con
tinued to weaknn and notes to northern
and eastern European points showed a
mixture of advances and declines.
All but one Issue of the liberty group
Closed at gains snd the general bond list
was active, strong and broad. Railroad
bonds, especially Pennsylvania, Heading.
Baltimore & Ohio. Atchison. Hock Island
and Kansas & Texas made appreciable
gains. Sales aggregated $ ltl.7.rt.t)00.

Ten loads o. stock, mo&Lly cattle,
reached tlie yards yetsterday. Five loads
of the cattle came direct to a packer
and four loads of extra choice steers,
whipped by the Portland Feeder company
from Burley, Idaho, were ent on to the
sound. There waa but little stock available
for the open market and the few rales
reported indicated no change in local mar
ket conditions.
Receipts were 236 cattle and 32 hogs.
