19 THE MORNING O I? EG ONI AN. "WEDNESDAY. DECEMBER 28, 1921 NO FREE -SELLING BY WHEaT FARMERS Offerings Are Checked by De cline in Prices. BIDS 1 TO 2 CENTS LOWER With Holiday Conditions Continu ing Abroad, No Export Business Is Expected In Domestic Mart. Th .rpected fre. selling of wheat fol lowing Chrl'tma. did not materlalls. yes terday. According to reports from the country, offerings by farmers were no more numerous than they have been for several weeks past. The day's purchases were mostly composed of small lots, no large )ots being offered. , The unwillingness of farmer to sell was probably due to the backset given the snarket by the eastern decline. Bids at the local exchange were 3 cents lower on hard white and 1 cent lower on other srradea. and offers made to the country were correspondingly reduced. The weak Bess In the east was largely the result of the decline of 1.861.000 bushels In the visi ble, whereas an increase had been ex pected. Bearish predictions as to the forth coming government crop report also in fluenced the market. Private cables received during the day sioted the continuance of the holiday broad. No Important export business is likely to be marked In any of the Ameri can markets until after New Years. Terminal receipts, in cars, were reported fey the Merchants' exchange as follows: Portland Wheat. Bar Flr.Oats.Hay. The San Francisco butter market did not hold up last week, as was generally looked for. The principal factor In the decline was the Influence of the expected arrival of Australian butter Monday. Deal ers were buying for Immediate needs only and wore anxious to keep stocks cleaned up, anticipating a declining market, large recoivers wero forced to make concessions to move their surplus receipts, but re duced prices did not stimulate business. The market declined 4c on I- score from Monday to Friday. The two steamers Ventura and Tahiti have about 19.400 cubes r6 lbs.) or approximately 1,088,000 pounds of Australian butter. Some of this will be needed on the Pacific coast, but the bulk of it will go to eastern mar kets. Further declines are looked for at fan Francisco this week, as many dealers liavs forolgn butter and will be oft the snarket for local goods. The market Closed weak and unsettled. Eastern markets were weaker than for nine time. The principal factors causing the weakness were the foreign butter and heavy production early In the week. Dan ish butter was offered at 4014c f. o. b. "e York, which price was lowered to .bout 87c at the dose. The two steamers Frederick the Eighth and Mongolia ex pected the early part of the week, will bring about 8000 caxks of Danish butter Production Is very heavy and the Ameri can Creamery Butter Manufacturers' as sociation shows an Increase in the make over last year of 45.7 per cent and aa Increase over the previous week of 3.9 per cent. Receipts by the middle of the veck for the four cities were about 10,000 tubs heavier than the previous week. All markets were weak, but New York was the lowest because of the foreign butter there. The quality of domestic butter Is rather poor, with stable, frozen feed and Other feed flavors prominent. Light color a complained of In Chicago. EGO MARKET HAS EASIER TONE local Butter Prices Not Affected by Han Francisco Decline. There waa an easier feeling In tho local nr market yesterday, as the demand was lighter than last week. Buying prices were the sam as Saturday and ths Poul try Producers' selling list was unchanged, but on .the street case count eggs could be bought a cent or two cheaper. Although butter dropped again at 6av Francisco, no change was mark! In local cube or print prices. The trade hopes to keep this market steady, but It may be Impossible If any of the Australian butter, just arrived at fan Francisco, is brought up. The poultry market was quiet. There waa no demand whatever for turkeys, as retailers did not clean up the day befors Christmas. Live hens were steady. Country dressed veal was firm and hjgh sjr at 15 cents. Pork was unchanged. Stock Trading Dull and Profes sional With Trend Mainly Up ward Money Rates Firm. NEW YORJC, Dec 27. The tentative operations of bull pools In selected Issues and occasional short covering in shares of recognized value, gave a ' semblance of strength to today's dull stock market. Incidents over Christmas were of a mixed or confusing character. Assurances by St. Paul officials of that road's sound financial position and resumption of divi dends on Peoples Gas after a lapse of four years were among favorable developments. Another increase of idle freight cars, lowered production of steel and Iron in the Ohio district and Impending price reduc tions by subsidiaries of the General Motors company, reflected the less encouraging aspects of the industrial situation. Shares of such varied types as equip ments, metals, domestic oils, chemicals and utilities were prominent featurea These were represented by American and Baldwin Locomotive, American Smelting. Anaconda, Inspiration, Kennecott and Utah coppers, the New Jersey and Cali fornia issues of Standard Oil, United Cigar Stores and Peoples Gas. Trading In rails was perfunctory and the turnover In former favorites of the steel and affiliated groups was at lowest ebb of the holiday seaaon. Sales were 600.000 shares. Money rates were moderately firm, eas ing from 5 to 4V4 per cent at mid-day. but reaching to the higher figure in the final hour. Rates for time accommodation, bank acceptances and mercantile paper were unaltered. Political conditions In the allied coun tries contributed to the firmer tons of foreign exchanges, the Italian rate prov ing the only exception. Of the neutral centers, the Swiss quotation eased sflghtly bus stlW remained at a premium high enough to suggest possible gold exports to that country. There were few exceptions to the gen eral strength of the bond market. Liberty and victory Issues closed at gains and most speculative rails Improved. Total sales, par value, aggregated $16,273,000. MTliDTLnRGEIl CHICAGO TRADERS EXPKCTED DECREASE FOR WEEK. Statement Has Bearish Effect on Market and X.ast Prices Are at Declines. CHICAGO, Dec. 2T. Announcement of ar. Increaae in th visible tuoply of wheat, whereas a decrease had been eapected, had a bearish effect on wheat today and no did disturbing gossip as to the novernment crop report tomorrow. The close waa un eottled, c to lic nt lower, with May $1.184 and July $1044 to I1.04H. Corn lost to lc and oats finished H & off to He advanc. In provisions the outcome varied from 21-jc decline to a rise of 5c. At first bulls had an advantatte in wheat, the outlook belnic for a seasoned Improve ment of cash wheat and flour demand as well aa for a falling off in the weekly total of the domestic visible supply of wheat. Sentiment befjan to change, however, when It was seen that early BUesses about the visible supply figure were not being borne out. During the rest of the day declines were In order and the bears made the most of fears that the government final crop es timates tomorrow morning would prove adverse to holders. A generally accepted opinion was that the government would figure the crop as being considerably larger than the preliminary estimate, 741, (MMVMrO bushels. Much talk was devoted to whether the report would upset bullish contentions that this country's exportable surplus had been exhausted. Corn also was de-pressed by a good sized increase in visible supply figures. On the other hand, oats were held rela tively steady by a moderate docrea.se. Provisions averaged a little higher, helped by an upturn In the value of hot;s. The Chirago grain letter received yes terday by the Overbeck A Cooke company of Portland follows: Wheat. Trade today wa mainly loral and a small volume of selling in the way of liquidation was sufficient to give the market a weak appearance late In the day. Tli ere was little In the way of news to create hearishness Rfirie from the increase of 1.3t1,04o in the visible supply. Cash markets were steady with the northwest showing more strength than the winter wheat markets. Kxport news lacked significance, which was fully In line with expectations, a the holiday are still being observed on the other side and any foreign buying now pending Is not likely to appear until alter the end of th year. Primary receipts for three diiys totaled tens than 1.1MXU. bushels, with indications pointing to a gradual dei-reae. Iteports to the effect that good milling wheat is getting hard to buy are becoming increasingly persistent and from a more diversified territory. There has been more or less hesitancy nhout taking i.h buying side of the marked until the government report is out of the way, as the trade ex perts the report to show an increase of nearly .o,omi.OM- bushels. Anything under this flgurf will receive a bullish construction. Corn. Selling by cash houses against coun try purchases was the outstanding feature and the demand was not broad enough to absorb the offerings, except nt price con cessions. Receipts were estimated at 5W1 cars and although prices were fractionally lower, the spot trading basis was a shade firmer. A little export business was done at the seaboard, hut bids averaged a little out of line. The shipping demand was also somewhat less active. Ttie government will make further purchases tomorrow for Rus s!an relief. ilany nf the st rongest in terests in the trade are putting their shoulders to the wheel in an effort to hrlng about higher prices, knowing that to lncrewse the buying power of the farmer means to stimulate business in general. Wa believe cuch endeavors are bound to bring results. tats. Commission house buying was quite active early in the session, giving the market a strong tone. The reaction at the close was in sympathy with other grains. The local rash market was without feature. The visible supply decreased 77U, (K for the week. Country offerings to arrive were small. Rye. Trade was almost at a standstill and quotations based on the changes la wheat. Cash ry continues to Khnw strength. No. 2 selling today at 4c over Oeeember. Leading futures ranged as follows: "WHEAT.
