14 THE MOTIVING OREGOXI AN, MONDAY, DECEMBER 12, 1921 SOMEBODY HEAD OFF THAT MAN EINSTEIN Relativity Killjoy Already Has Made Trouble Enough. MOON IS FOUND SPEEDING Week of EUht Days, Two Full Moons a Month and Other Dreadful Things In Store. BT WILLIAM BIRD. .Coorrliht. 1I21. by The Oregonlan.l LONDON, Dec. 11. (Special Cable.) The full and frightful consequences of the Einstein theory are Just be ginning to be appreciated. Too many people up to this time have gone quietly about their business If any without regard to the professor and his advanced Ideas (not to use the longer and uglier word "propa ganda"), blissfully Ignorant of the fact that, while they were thus oc copied, the professor was patiently at work undermining the very bases of thA inlar A vat em. For, to s'peak the- whole horrible truth. British astronomers at the Greenwich observatory have just dis covered that, thanks to the Einstein theory of relativity, the moon has peeded up In its orbit and is now 8O0 yards (about half a mile) ahead of the. point where It was 24 years aaro relatively sneaklncr, of course If this sort of thing goes on and tt will go on they declare, unless something Is done about it. It won t be many million years before we shall have two or three full moons every month and four or five tides Instead of two every day. General IJeranuenient Seen. Imagine the consequences. Visitors at summer hotels, when that time comes, will be obliged to overhear the moonings of moonstruck cousin on the verandas at least twice as often as thev now do. Criminals, "taking advantage of the dark of the moon," will have twice as many opportunities for their fell deeds. Graveyard tthosts will scarcely get any rest at all. and the demand for rabbits- feet will force the price far out of reach of the common man nblLeed to pass by a cemetery on his wiv home from his nocturnal tolls. All this, coupled with the fact that publishers of almanacs and calendars will have to scrap their whole stock of tables and plates, means a direct loss that is certain to be reflected in higher taxes, unemployment and gen eral misery. And why? Simply because a man with a fine sounding title and an unmistakably German name has been allowed to spread his subversive doctrine among the patriotic and conservative masses. Anil That Isn't All. Nor is this all. The matter of the t!des alone concerns every cttlren, lit tle as he may realize it. it it is true today and it has never been success fully contested that time and tide wait for no man. how much more so will It be the case when said tides are bobbing up and down eyery few hours along the American coasts from Maine to Texas and from Seat tle to San Diego. Some may say they have never asked the tides to wait for them and that they may go hang, but this Is a elfish and short-sighted attitude to take. In view of this menace, what Is be ing done by our public authorities? Can anybody point to a single bill in troduced into the parliament of any allied country, putting a stop to this sort of tampering with things that have always given satisfaction just as they are and that the vast ma jority of people the world over would prefer to maintain on their .present historical and traditional basts? To look at the record one would think that our legislators were perfectly content to have the moon racing around in its orbit at a reckless pace, In defiance of all the laws of celes tial traffic and astronomy. Eight-Day M'eek Looming. And if the moon is to be allowed to break the laws with Impunity the ex ample Is sure to spread. The next thing the sun will Join the race and we shall have eight days in a week and the most popular poem In the English language will have to be re vised to read: I Thirty-five days hath September, April, June and November. All the rest have thirty-six, Kxceptlng February, which alone nam tniny-twn, anei in Disectue or leap years, thirty-three. Tou see, the whole rhyme and wing of the thing Is destroyed. There will be 424 days in a year and this In turn Is sure to be used by un scrupulous landlords as a new pretext for raising rents. By and large, then, there is little to be hoped from our legislators, who. as usual, are too busy looking out for their own narrow political interests to concern themselves with the gen eral welfare, and the only chance of avoiding calamity lies In an aroused and awakened public opinion. People who want to avoid having the sun rise and wake the baby at J o'clock In the morning should or ganise now before it Is too late and make their sentiments felt. Obituary. Charles E. Wheelock.
