21 THE MORNING OIIEGONIAN. WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 30, 1921 T RANSFERS 0 WOOL ON ACTIVE SCALE Demand Keen, Especially for Finer Grades. BUYING BY EASTERN FIRMS Trading Largely Speculative, With Manufacturers Covering Fu ture Requirements. The demand for Oregon woo! continues and the liberal purchases for eastern ac count are steadily reducing local ware houee stocks. The strongest call Is for fine wools, of which little Is left In the east.- The demand, as was stated before, is mainly speculative and bears no rela tion to the present state of the foods trade. It Is believed by wool men that with the final enactment of the emergency tariff extension bill, under the terms of which the bill Is continued In force until a per manent tariff Is enacted, the Importation of wools suitable for clothing; purposes can hardly be accomplished to any extent be fore next summer'. An early enactment of the permanent tariff would, of course, al low considerable wool to be Imported at once, as the manufacturers are beginning to accumulate considerable stocks of cloth Ins; wool In bond. Several cargoes, mostly of Australian and South American wool have come for ward during the past fortnight, more or less of which has been consigned direct to the larger manufacturers. Probably present stocks of clothing wool In bond at Boston are not lens than 10,000,000 pounds, with cargoes still coming to augment these stocks and still other wool unshipped which will be sent forward presently. We must have wool from abroad, more espe cially fine wool from Australia, since we have been decreasing bur production of the finer wools In this country of late, for we produce no more than 50 per cent of our consumptive requirements in raw wool from year to year. The government which now haa slightly ever 25,000,000 pounds of wool left, has made allocations for the next sale on Pe cember 1, when almost 7,000,000 pounds will be offered for sale. The wool trade Is Interested In the announcement of a 10 per cent decrease In wool freight rates from the west to eastern seaboard for an experimental period of six months. The announcement was not unexpected and will probably help business not a little. LOCAL WHEAT PRICES IN 6LCMP Bids at Merchants Exchange Reduced From One to Six Cenls. With the sharp break In Chicago options and weaker private cables the local wheat market took a drop yesterday. Bids at the Merchants' Exchange were 1 to 4 cents lower for the November and December de liveries, while January wheat was down 4 to 6 cents as compared with Monday, Eastern reports were of 500,000 bushels f wheat taken for export. A private cable said the wheat crop In Buenos Aires province la not satisfactory. The Argentine market, which advanced 7 to 714 cents In the last two days, closed weak and 2H cents lower. Wheat and flour on passage to Europe Increased 100, 000 bushels for the week, corn Increased 714,000 bushels and oats In creased 3S,0nr bushels. The Canadian wheat visible Is 81.611,000 bushels against 18.144,000 , bushela last "year, Oats T, DM,000 bushels against 8.590, 000 bushels and barley 2,341,000 bushels against 1,089,000 bushels. Amendment to regulations under the' TTnlted States grain standards act reduces the minimum fee In an appeal or dispute on bulk or sacked grain in carload lots from 3 to 12 per car, and establishes a flat rate of 50c per 1000 bushels on bulk or sacked grain other than In carload lots. This latter rate Is applicable to grain loaded into vessels. The amendment be came effective October 29, 1021. Terminal receipts. In cars, were reported by the Merchants' Exchange as follows: Wht. No immediate change in local butter prices Is contemplated as a result of the pon-recelpt of orders from California. Ship ments are being made to Seattle. Tacoma and Vancouver, B. Some of the local creameries, in fact, are short. Pending new developments in the south, local prices will be held where they are. A quotation of 40 cents on Australian butter was sent from San Francisco, showing there is no Intention of throwing the imported article on the market yet. There was a weak feeling in the egg market and asking prices on the street were about a cent lower. The abrupt drop In San Francisco prices and the Increase In local receipts since the storm are hav ing a bearish effect on the fresh egg mar ket, while there Is also mora pressure to sell storage eggs. Live poultry receipts were light and hens and springs were steady. Dressed turkeys cleaned up at 37 38c for choice. Dressed pork was weak and lower with no sales above 13 cents. Arrivals failed to clean up. There was no change in the veal situation. Eastern Butter Markets React. The usual heavy run of holiday poultry haa been marketed, resulting In a full sup ply on all markets, which Is being moved st steady prices, says the weekly prod uce review of Swift at Co. of Chicago. The butter market has reacted a little from declines noted during the previous week. There Is a larg amount of butter being made that will not grade up to standarda or extras. More frequent mar keting and better care of the cream on the farm would prove . beneficial. A large shipment of butter from Australia arrived during the week at San Francisco. Fresh eggs continue In light supply, sell ing at steady prices. Bank Clearings. Bank clearings of the northwestern cities yesterday were as loimwa. Clearings. Today's etock trading was unusually active and broad, as evidenced by sales of 850,000 share. and a turnover of about 826,500,000 par value In bonds. The latter exceeded any total In several months. Bonds were the center of attraction, es pecially government issues. No less than seven liberty series mounted to highest records for a year or two. Railway shares again dominated and oils, coppers, motor specialties and tobac co kept more or less even pace. Back wardness was shown by steels and equip ments and heaviness of miscellaneous is sues contributed to the market's uncertain trend. Sears. Roebuck again was under depres sion and several agricultural Issues re acted. Aside from rails, which held firm, the general list eased under liquidation In the final hour, call money's rise to 5 per cent causing selling for both accounts Dealings In foreign exchange were light. The demand for sterling, francs and Scan dinavian remittances was nominal, not withstanding the approach of December, which usually brings heavy purchases of food and cotton bills on leading European centers. European war Issues did not share In the rise of liberty bonds, but South American Issues were strong. Many rails and Indus trials. Including United States Steel 6s, strengthened perceptibly and several new underwrltlnga for moderate amounts were oversubscribed. CLOSING STOCK QUOTATIONS. I T REACTS SETBACK EXPECTED AFTER RECENT BIG ADVANCE. Argentine Grain Offered to Europe Under United States Price, Selling Is General. CHICAGO. Nov. 29. Wheat underwent a material decline In price today, largely by way of reaction from the recent ad vance of more than 12c. There was an unsettled close, 2c to 8c net lower, with December $1.11 to $1.11 and May $1.15 to $1.15. Corn loat ljlc to l?2c. oats flniahed unchanged to half a cent off and provisions were down 2 6 loc. Many traders in wheat took the position that a setback In values was to be ex pected, as the technical position of the market had been weakened by the big ad vance. Selling by commission houses be came more general, and there was consid erable liquidation of December holdings. Resales of winter wheat at Liverpool 8c under cost were announced, and it was said Argentine wheat was being offered at $1.27 c. 1. f. Europe, against $131 1.81 for United States wheat by way of the gulf of Mexico. The finish was at about the lowest level of the day. Corn waa depressed by lack of support and by predictions that colder weather would bring enlargement of recetpta Oats were better sustained as a result of buying by elevator intereats. Provisions averaged lower with hogs. The Chicago grain letter received yes terday by the Ovrbeck ft Cooke com pary of Portland follows: Wheat Heavy liquidation made Its appearance early In the day when the market failed to advance In the face cf bullish news and as prices weakened pressure Increased. Aside from weakness in the Minneapolis cash market, which was due to millers holding off to see what they will get on December contracts, there was little to account for the decline. The Liverpool market was again strona and closed higher, while Argentine cables at the opening were 3 cents higher, but lost 2 cents of the advance at noon. Australian and Argentina crop advices were less favorable with the former claiming wheat menaced by bush fires and the latter deteriorating from drouth. A British statistician says exporting coun tries of the world will have enough wheat to supply Importers for five months after the end of this crop year without recourse to the new crops. He may be right, but we- fall to see where It is coming from. The United States haa already shipped about 179.000.000 bushela and he calcu lates our exportable surplus at 181.000,000 bushels. If these figures are correct me United States Itself will be sn Importer before July 1, 1922. The situation, ac cording to our analysis, warrants higher prices and we think they will be recorded regardless of the fact that selling such aa appeared today may cause reactions from time to time. Corn Heavy liquidation of December, presumably in anticipation of large de liveries on contracts the day after to morrow, gave this market a weak tone. Cash market was rather easy, but at the same time there was evidence of an li portant improvement In the domestic shipping demand. Sales of 220,000 bushels were reported. There waa also a broader export Inquiry, but bids were slightly out of line. The long side of futures requires patience, but we believe It will prove profitable. i Oats Liquidation In December was offset In large part by buying of May by elevator Interests and this market held relatively firmer than other grains. Cash market was slightly lower, but the ship ping demand was quite active. Leading futures ranged as follows: WHEAT. Open. Hijrh. Low. Close. Dec $1.14 I.14 $1.11 $1.11 May 1.17 1.18 1.15 1.15 . THE ANSWER When the contract was let for pavement on the Morrison street bridge, the usual questions for dis cussion arose concerning specifica tions, etc. All these questions were answered In a sentence by the au thorities, who said, 'Simply make it like the pavement on Hawthorne bridge."
