TIIE MORNING OKEGONIAN, TUESDAY, OCTOBER 23, 1021 21 BETTER FEELING M WET MARKET Buyers' Offers More Numer ous, but Few Sellers. - EXCHANGE BIDS ADVANCED Savl ng I n .Lower Freight HatQs Will Go to Farmers Ocean I'relgbts Are Also Declining. There wm a mor confident feeling In th wheat markst yesterday and buyers snowed more disposition to take on wheat, but this did not apply particularly to the. xporters, notwithstanding- the lower ocean freights quoted. These were down to S3s bid and 40a asked. Wheat offers at the Merchants Bi banre were 8 cents higher on hard white, 3 cents higher on club and 25 cents high er on the other grades than Saturday. Prices bid In the country however, were Unchanged from the' close of last week, being 1.05 for club and forty-fold and 11.07 fur hard winter, Portland. These were equal to about 90 to 05 cents In the Interior for club wheat. The prices are till out of line with farmers ldeaa and there waa little selling. The cut In railroad rates en grain and srrain products, ordered by the Interstate commerce commission, will equal about cents a bushl on wheat. This saving will go to the farmers and will not affect the price of wheat here. The coarse grain market waa quiet. Kovember and December white oats were 91 lower and eastern yellow corn was down $-', There was no demand for gray eats. ftarlpy was unchanged. World shipments of wheat and flour last week were 13,641,000 bushels, of which 436,000 bushels went to India. North America shipped 11.048,000 bushels of Wheat and 2,102,000 bushels of corn. Total world shipments of corn were 4,846,000 bushels. Argentine weather waa ft no according to cables received and the crop outlook Is being maintained. Rains have fallen over a wide area In India. Terminal receipts. In ears, were reported by the Merchants' Exchange as follows: Wheat. Bar. Fir. Ota. Hav. Eastern butter markets opened steady last week with the demand principally for fine grades. However, seconds at Chicago ruled very firm and active and medium grades toward the close- of the week became more active. Atlantic coast markets lost their strength toward the Clone of the week and supplies became more liberal, but all markets were steady at the close. Canadian butter Is movlug In New York at 454c Centralized cars at Chicago ruled steady throughout the week, although not active, and If a buyer found a 00 score that he could use he waa willing to pay the price, and some paid light premium, but 8tto were draggy all week and offerings ahowed considerable range. Eighty-eight score cars were In limited supply and demand active. Of ferings of Irish butter are reported at 44c, duty paid. The San Francisco market showed con alderable fluctuation In prices during the week and 02 score declined He from Fri day to Wednesday. Toward the end of the week prices advanced lo and closed only He below the opening figure. Trad ing ws quiet and shipping demand from the south fell off, leaving a surplus of all ejradrs. The weaker tone was also Influ enced by the talk of Imported butter and heavy receipts from outside points. De mand improved Thursday for the top grades and they became rather scarce. Medium and undergrade! also moved more frerly and closing' tone was firm. San Francisco and Los Angeles show a marked atorage decrease and the Pacific coast Is approximately 1,300,000 pounds short of last year. It Is generally thought that prices are about as high now as they will go this season, due to availability of foreign butter. Recelpta Included a ship ment of Canadian butter. LOWER FREIGHT RATES ON FRC1T Traffic and Credit Association of Yakima Working For Rednrtloa. Another reduction In freight rate on fruit Is confidently expected as a result f the recent hearing before the Interstate commerce commlwlon, as a .part of the genera) rate reduction. Meanwhile the Yakima Traffic and Credit association and Individual shippers and growers are work ing for a further extension of the reduced rates which went Into effect August 22. The $1.50 rate, which means with taxes about 77 cents a box, has been extended beyond December 31 to Chicago, but be yond Chicago after that time the old rates of $1,064 or 63 cents a box will prevail. Yakima shippers of fruit are laying plans for Immediate action In oaae the railroad strike is called and a number of large shippers have expressed the hope that the lue will be brought to a per manent and definite settlement, even If It Involves a strike. E. E. Samson of E. E. Kimsnii & Co and Fred Eberle of the Yakima County Horticultural union both take this attitude. C. W. Grant of Rtchey A Gilbert, member of the transportation committee of the traffic association, says plans are worked out for the handling: of the situation In case of strike, YAKIMA ArrLKS ARK BEING STORED Large Quantities Pnt Away Becanae of Car Shortage and Threatened Strike. I a rice quantities of apples are going Into Cold storage In the Yakima valley as a rcoult of the car shortage and threatened strike, but so far not many have been sent to Seattle for storage In port com minion ho une and for later shipment by water. The boat sailing November 4 for Atlantic ports will carry some Wenatchee fhtpnv'nt . hut lit tie from Yakima. The next sailing; to the United Kingdom, No vember 20, wllr take a considerable ton nage of Yakima apples, however. Definite promise of relief from the shortage of refrigerator cars haa been given for next week. W. J. Urquhart, rep resenting valley shippers at Chicago, wired on Friday that 1605 cars had passed through Chicago westbound and the Northern Pacific reported 500 oars In eastern, division and 46 cars In middle western divisions. Allowing for possible duplication In eastern divisions, the office of the Traffic and Credit association esti mated that 1800 cars are on the way and will arrive early next week. Carlot shipments from the Takima, val ley for tbe week October 14 totaled 1022 cara. only slightly less thaa the shipment for the previous week. Visible Wheat Supply Decrease. The railroad labor altuatlon continued to exercise a powerful Influence orer tbe stock market today, altbou&h trustworthy advices sus tested that earnest efforts toward a com promise of differences were tinder way. London and continental centers were n.rvous In consequence of the Irish and Hungarian situations and the local money market stiffened as a result of last Satur day's large loss of cash reserves by clear ing house Institutions. Dealings in rails, were not especially large and ffalns In those stocks held with in limited bounds, but domestic oils, also equipments, motors and various affiliated specialties made extreme advances of une to four points. Foreign oils denoted a recurrence of last week's liquidation of those Issues. Royal Dutch snd Shell Transport were under In termittent pressure, as was also Mexican Petroleum, in which shorts finally were driven to cover. Steels manifested all of their recent Ir regularity, but the course of these stocks Indicated that the speculative element had discounted any unfavorable features of the United States Steel quarterly, statement, w hich will be Issued tomorrow. Sales were &GO.00O shares. The five per cent opening rate for call loans was advanced to 6 per cent at mid day and 6 per cent in the final hour, with out Interference, however, to the higher trend of many industrial and miscellaneous Issues. Time funds were unchanged and commercial paper and bank acceptances remained steady. Exchanges on London and other Impor tant European points did not reflect politi cal conditions: Sterling rose to a fraction 6f lte maximum for the current movement and even the German mark held firm, notwithstanding- the fall of the Wlrth minis try, but far easterrr rates, especially the Chinese quotation, reacted shsrply. liberty Issues made only slight gains or 10SJ4.., but the general run of domestic bonds was firmer than the share list. For eign bonds were mixed, though meinly lower, Cuba Cane sevens Improving, how ever, on financing prospects. Total sales, par value, ,12.350,000. CLOSING STOCK QUOTATIONS. Unexpected falling In the visible supply total, together with increased talk of the rail strike being averted, led to a material upturn today In thn nrlce of wheat. Closing quotations, although unsettled, were lc to 2c net higher, with December 11.07 to $1.08 and May $1.12 to $1.12. Corn gained lc to lc and oats cc to 3-c. In provisions the outcome varied from 12o decline to 15c advance. Most wheat traders had looked for a liberal enlargement today In the visible supply. As soon, howeveri as Indications appeared that the general assumption In this respect would prove unfounded, per sistent buying on the part of -strong com mission houses set In. Demand for' wheat was further stimulated on account of cur rent developments, which caused many dealers to conclude that the strike situa tion was clearing rapidly. On the other hand, export news was bearish Corn and oats rose with wheat Be sides, smallness of receipts counted as a bullish Influence. Downturns In hogs mads provision, av erage lower. The Chicago grain letter, received yes terday by the Overbeck A Cooke company of Portland, follows: Wheat Sentiment was bearish early In the - day, but underwent a remarkable change before the close. There were a number of developments which contra dicted the most influential bearish theories of last week. Not the fcsaat of these was the strength in the Liverpool market In face of Saturday's reports to the effect that Argentina wheat was pressing on the market there and also that there was a considerable quantity of wheat on con signment on paseage. The decrease In the visible supply, while not large, was signifi cant In that It Indicates we are being com pelled to eat Into available stocks at a very early. date this season. Country offer ings to arrive were reported light and the local cash market was strong with pre miums on certain grades as much as 3 cents higher. Advices from the northwest Indicate that the big movement of spring wheat Is over. Corn Trade was broader In this mar ket today and prices responded readily to the strength In wheat, as well as to In creasing evidence of a stronger situation developing in the cash market. Advices from down state today were to the effect that urgent selling of old corn had ceased. Receipts were only 810 cars for two days and cash was strong at 1 cents advance from Saturday. . We believe bearish factors have been thoroughly discounted. Oats Selling early by cash and elevator Interests was well taken and the market thereafter displayed a firm tone. Receipts were 170 cars and cash prices were frac tionally higher. For the first time in many months the visible supply .showed a de crease. Rye Futures were firm on scattered buying, inspired by strength in wheat. Hedging pressure from the northwest served to check bullish enthusiasm. ranged as Eotiows: Dec May Dec. May Dec. May .Tan.
