Th two cargoes oit wheat sold by Port land exporters for shipment to India mark the first business os this kind ever done here. Reports from the east that more business with India Is pending- are not correct, however, as cables received yes terday showed that wheat could be bought cheaper In Australia now than on the Pa cific coast and It will take another general 'turn in conditions to make the Indian mar ket available to Portland shippers. In past years India was an Important ex porter of wheat, but ft short crop this year has made her dependent on other coun tries. Thn 10'Jl crop of India la estimated at 2.V,004,000 bushels against 876.000,000 bushels In IDilO and a five-year average (1Q0U to of 250,000,000 bushels. India's wheat imports this year have been mainly from Australia. The wheat market was firmer yesterday but still quiet. No new business with Ku rope was reported. At the Merchants' Ex change all wheat bids were 1 cent higher than Saturday, except red Walla, which was unchanged. The feed grains were dull with white eats and No. 2 yellow corn unchanged. No offers for barley or gray oats were posted. Tha London Times' final report on Brit ish crops shows wheat US. 76 per cent, qual ity generally excellent, threshing expec tations were frequently exceeded, some times running 00 to 70 bushels per acre. North American exports last week were T,3tKl,000 bushels of wheat and flour. 2,802.000 bushels of corn and 108,000 bush els of oats. Terminal receipts, Jn cars, were reported by the Merchants' Exchange as follows: Monday ........ Year axo Season to date. Year ago T sen ma Saturday Year ago Feasen to data Year ago ...... The shortage of fine butter held all eaatarn markets steady to firm throughout the past week. Dealers were not inclined to carry over goods and buyers were not in cllned to pay premiums. Trading lacked snap and buyers took principally small lots for consumptive needs and were not L willing to take chances on the market. Itlndergrades moved slowly, ' but quality showed Improvement and toward the close of the week supplies of all grades were well cleared up, ao the markets slowly gained strength and closed fairly firm. Carlots of fine butter have been very scarce, but the demand was not very act ive. Undergrade ears were plentiful the i first of the week, but slowly eleared and gained strength at the close. No new in formation on shipment of Danish r Can adian butter waa available. ' Trading continued active with the mar ket firm at San Francisco during the past week. Conditions were about the same with the shortage of butter In the south and lower production being more plainly felt. The good local and outside demand caused a scarcity of all grades of fresh butter and an active movement in storage fj stocks. Four cars were shipped to Los Angeles ouring (no weea ana one car was received from North Dakota. The only new feature of Importance was the various offerings and rumors of importations of foreign butter. The latest reliable in for mtftion gives quotations here at San-Fran cisco, duty paid, on New Zealand butter at 43c, Australian 3SHc and Canadian 42c. Dealers so far have manifested very little buying Interest, due to the unknown qual ity of Australian and Canadian butter and the high price of New Zealand. Som are of the opinion that it would not be safe to buy New Zealand at above 35c, duty paid. Australian and New Zealand "nutter-could hardly arrive before December, but Canadian can be delivered In a few days. The price of 02 score showed a net gain of lc and closed at 46c. CANADIAN Ut'TTEIt OS MARKET Oregon Cubes Scarce and Firm- Demand for Egga Slow. Canadian butter was on the local mar ket yesterday and offered at 43 cents. The quality was good, but the color rather light. A shipment of Dakota but ter was also on sale at the same price. There was no material change in the supply of Oregon cubes and because of the scarcity of extras the market for this grade waa very firm. Ecgs continued to drag and the market had a weak undertone, notwithstanding the light receipts. The best price quoted on Frgnt. street for candled ranch was 48 cents and there were other sellers at 48 and 46 cents, while selects were available at 53 cents. Poultry arrivals were moderate 'and Saturday's prices generally ruled. . Court- Itry dressed meats were weak. Market for Grapes Slow. There was no Improvement in the local market for grapes yesterday. The sup ply on hand was fairly large and buying was slow. With the Yamhill market Sell ing all kinds of Oregon grapes at 10 cents a pound, or three pounds for a quarter, not much demand from retailers nould be expected on Front street. The best shipping grapes from southern Ore gon were still quoted at $2.25, but the bulk of the sales were at from $1.50 to $2. Oat No. 2 white fd 25.00 25.00 No. 2 K. The strength of important foreign exchanges, especially the British rate; the first increase, although very slight, in bookings shown by the United States Steel corporation since July, 1020, and new high records of the year by several or the liberty bonds issue were ignored market factors. Other favorable Incidents included the year's best price for bar silver, another advance in copper metal, based on extension of the recent inquiry, and the substantial Improvement noted in business conditions throughout the west and south west, with a notable growth of raitwa: tonnage.
