TIIE MORNING OREGONIAN, FRIDAY, AUGUST 19, 1921 13 EAST HELD MARKET 0 CEDAR SIGLE Millmen Discuss Chances Sales on Atlantic. " of COST FIGURES PR0DUCED Other Rooting Materials Declared . More Expensive Than Those Made In Oregon Woods. . "The red cedar shingle of Oregon and Washington is the lowest-cost material for the roofs and sides of houses that can be produced and de livered anywhere In the United States," said E. C. Miller, president of the ehlng-le branch of the West Coast Lumbermen's association at a conven tion of shingle manufacturers at the r uuunomah hotel yesterday. Mr. Miller, who. is president of the Grays Harbor Shingie company of Aberdeen, Wash., has Just returned from an extended trip through the New England and Atlantic coast terri tory on behalf of the red cedar shin gle Industry. He told the assembled shingle men that the eastern markets will consume hundreds of cars of ad ditional shingles if the dealers there are properly informed of the merits of this product. He presented detailed figures showing the relative cost of the various types and grades of red cedar shingles placed on the roofs and side walls of houses in New York and other eastern states, compared with roofing and. siding made of other ma terials. Freight CoHt Included. His statistics included the freight costs and the costs of the supporting roof structure in each case and- re vealed a decided economy on the side of shingles, not only in original cost but in the coat per unit per year, based on the known length of life for each kind of material used. With the dissemination of this kind of information, which the association now is about to undertake, Mr. Miller is thoroughly convinced that the lum ber dealers of the east and middle west, and the building public in turn, will demand more and more red cedar shingles, with the result that the in dustry here will be greatly stimu lated. The meeting brought forth much other interesting and valuable dis cussion, principal among which was the report of K. S. Whiting, of Seat tle, Wash., secretary of the shingle association, on anti-shingle legisla tion pending in various states and municipalities. Legal Aspect Discussed. Mr. Whiting pointed out that wher ever the public and the law-making bodies are properly Informed regard ing -the fire-resisting properties of shingles, no prohibitory legislation has been enacted. But through occa sional misunderstandings and natural economic opposition to shingles, much discriminatory legislation has been proposed and in some places actually enacted. t The most notable example ofthis kind was the provision in the state housing bill passed by the Jast session of the California legislature, which would prohibit the use of shingles in any incorporated city or town in that state. The measure was scheduled to go into effect September 1 of this year, but through the efforts of the shingle manufacturers of the north west, and the redwood shingle and lumber manufacturers of California, the referendum was invoked and the whole question will be up for vote of tne people in that state next year. Agitation Is Fought. Anti-shingle agitation frequently crops up In various parts of the coun try, Mr. Whiting explained, and this demands the constant vigilance of the association. When the merits of shin gle roofs and siding are fully under stood, he said, there is little agita tion against them. George M. Cornwall, editor of The Tlmberman, appealed for support for tne eirorts of the association to ex tend the markets for shingles. C. E. ruiraan presided. HARBOR DATA PREPARED BUSINESS LOSSES BXTUXG! Losses of Portland merchants by high water in the spring: would' pay a large ehare of the interest oi the sujn Deeded to build a modern water front on the west side from the Burnside bridgre to Jefferson street, according to an investigation City Engineer Laurgraard has completed. The cost ared losses caused In the business dis trict by the higrh water last spring amounted to $69,200, Mr. Laurcaard said. The losses included damagre to buildings and wharves and to poods stored in basements. The cost of moving: the Roods from the cellars and then returning them and pumping; water from the basements and man holes In the district was Included, as well as the extra rent for restorage of goods. Mr. Laurg-aard estimated that the expense to the merchants, including: loss and damagre to goods and to buildings, was $43,200, while public utility concerns paid an additional $26,000, 'according to their own esti mates. The harbor project now under con sideration by the city engineer and a committee of property owners has been estimated to entail a total ex penditure of $7,500,000. GOAT BREAKS UP SHOW t Harry Lewis, Producer, Recalls Early Venture in. Oregon. When Mayor Baker operated a theater at Third and Tamhill streets, years ago, an act by Lewis and Lake played an engagement on one of the bills there. Harry Lewis of. this team, who is now manager and pro ducer of "Good Night, London," which ia playing at the Pantages this week, says this engagement at Mavor Baker's theater was the beginning of his managerial ventures. Following the closing of the bill at the theater he organized a musical show. "The Green Goat. at Van couver. Wash. Everything went smoothly with the venture until the company reached The Dalles, where the goat, which was carried with the properties, ate a part of the drop curtains in the theater there, damag ing them beyond repair. Mr. Lewis closed his tour for the summer and returned to Portland to live, bringing the goat with him. The animal broke loose from where it was tied in bia yard and ate up some lace curtalna hanging on a clothes line in a neigh bor's yard. This led the police to take the froat into custody. Mr. Lewis, deciding that the goat was a Unz, abandoned the proposed next season's tour. Mr. Lewis has been a producer of musical shows since then, however, and claims Portland as his home.
