SI THE MORNING OREGONIAN, THURSDAY, ATJGTTST 18, 1921 THIRTY GENTS PAID FORra CROP HOPS Keen Demand From East Puts Market Higher. SPECULATION IS EVIDENT IPoot Crop Prospects Aoroad Have Uullisii Effect Spots Share la Upvad MoTemcnL The fcop market La a9vln enjoying a tootn, which im twlieved to le due to pcuI&tiT buying by eastern dealers. The Interest la chiefly In new crop contracts. X number of deals In futures were made in tfcto atate at 20 to 25 cent and with the later strength of the market the price advanced to 80 cent, at which figure one r two contracts were signed up. The English dealers as yet how no disposition to take hold, yet It 1 likely that It is the unfavorable condition of the foreign crops that Is wudnp the east am dealers to come Into the market. The crop In Eng-land, It ie known, will be a son all one, though recent rains were of aom benefit. On the continent the crops iware also affected by th-e Ions drouth In b early part of the summer: This makes it probable that the domestic dealers can set Into the South American markets that were formerly controlled by the Germans. Pacific coast crops will hardly be any targrer than last year. Oregon may have 60,000 bales, but most of them are under contract and If, because of the short Engl If h crop, the London dealers are forced to come In later the early buying by the American dealers will prov to have been profitable. epot hops have shared In the strength and activity of contracts. While there have not been many sales of Oregon 1920s as Ugh as 20 cents has been paid. The rise In the market ta causing many growers to hold back. Trading has been heaviest In the California sections. One block of JO0O bales of Sacramento was sold at 15 cents. ATJSTRAXIA SELLS 30,000 TON'S WHEAT Long Credit Given Germany Fats Exporters Out of Game. Free offerings of Canadian wheat on 90 days' time, as well as libera! sales of Aus tralian wheat on the same terms, have taken the European market away from exporters here, who have been demanding cash for their wheat and trying to make sales on this basis. Australia sold no less than 30,000 tons to Germany on a 00 days' credit and private cables told of the sale of a cargo of Canadian also to Germany. Under the circumstances offers made by local exporters failed to result In business. Bids sent Into the country were about 2 cents lower than Tuesday and not many farmers disposed to sell. At the Mer chants' Exchange all wheat bids were re duced 1 cent. Coarse grains also tended lower. The government weekly weather and crop report said: "Weather was generally favorable for crops and farm operations. Late corn greatly Improved as a result of the rains in the great valleys and the northeast. Harvesting of small grains made good progress, although there was considerable damage to grain in shock on account of vainfaU. Broomhairs Argentine cable aaid: The fntarefl market is ruled by speculators. Foreign Inquiry' Is very small. Exporters tmying only small quantities Rain fell In northern sections. Soil already sown in province of Santa Fe under somewhat smaller acreage. Exports of corn decreas Ing but farmers continue to offer freely and port stocks - are holding up." Terminal receipts, in cars, were ported by the Merchants Exchange as follows: Portland Wht. Brly. Fir. Oats. Rye te all cut and nearly all threshed. Winter wheat harvest about complete in Umatilla and Sherman counties and is In full swing xn Baker and Grant counties; this crop la mostly cut. and threshing Is well ad vanced in the central valleys; the hot winds ripened the wheat very rapidly in Lane county and there will be some loss from shattered grain. Corn Is making stood growth under irrigation, but where not Irrigated Is badly In need of rain. Late apples are sizing well, but need. Cooler weather in the Rogue river valley, and high temperature with absence of wind has eauaed some sun scald in the Hood River district. Bartlett pear pick ing continues In Jackson and soon will begin In Douglas county. Prunes are do ing fairly well under the droughty con ditions. Peaches are coming into mar ket in Increasing quantities. Blackberries are ripening rapidly and some are being picked, but they are drying up In places and would be greatly benefited by rain. Haying continues in coast and eastern counties under Ideal conditions. Seed clover is short and needs rain; cutting or this crop is well under way in Lane county. Most of the second crop of aj falfa is in shock or stack, the third crop shows good growth in Umatilla and is about ready to cut in Jackson, and re port is received that grasshoppers are doing considerable damage to the fourth crop In Josephine county. While valley p. inures are mostly dry except where it-rlgated. the mountain ranges are still ample, and livestock continues In uni formly good condition. Late plantings of potatoes are suffering tor moisture in non-irrigated localities the drought has caused premature ripen ing of the early varieties In some places ana me crop is mostly on the market. Gardens where not Irrigated are dried on Tomatoes, cantaloupes and roasting ears are becoming plentiful. While hops are fair to good. they are much in need of rain. Malaga Grapes in Market. Aug. 17. Conditions In the stock market today underwent some alter ation from their recent reactionary trend. Numerous speculative Issues established new low records for the year, but these were recovered in the vigorous rebound of the last hour. Aoart from a favorable forecast of Mex ican Petroleum's earnings and some activ ity in the steel trade, there was no spe cific news to account for tha sudden re versal. Technical conditions or an over extension of the shorts probably were ac celerating factors. Prlcos were lower by 1 to 4 points In the first half of the session. Bears made capi tal of further dividend reductions and omissions and the retention of the 6 per cent rate for call money, that rate hold ing throughout the day. Oils were the outstanding features, espe cially foreign issues. Prior to publication of Mexican Petroleum's prospective finan cial returns, that stock, as well as Pan American, Shell Transport and Royal Dutch, were under constant pressure. Independent steels and secondary equip ments, which are dependent upon the rail roads for their sustenance, also suffered variable setbacks with motors, chemical, fertilizer and food issues. New York Airbrake was the one stock to manifest little recuperative power, declin ing 5 points. Sales amounted to 475,000 shares. A brisk rally In marks resulted In buying for German account and intimation that impending reparations payments are likely to be anticipated featured the foreign ex changes. London and most continental rates, notably Dutch bills, were inclined to react. l Trading In bonds -was more diversified and a steadier tone ruled In the more Im portant domestic and foreign issues. Lib erty fourth 44s showed especial strength. Total sales, par value, $8,650,000. CLOSING STOCK QUOTATIONS. CFurnished by Overbeck & Cooke com pany, Portland.) Prices Close Heavy and Sharply IiOwer at "hleag"0 East liu j s "Well on Breaks. CHICAGO, Aug. 17. Unfavorable re ports about general business conditions gave an advantage today to bears In the wheat market. Prices closed heavy Zc to 3c net lower, with September $1.19 to $1.19 and December $1.20 to $L2l. Corn lost c to Htf lc, oata c to c and Drovisions 15c to ode Attention or traders in wneat centered largely on official announcement that o, 700,000 people are out of work in the United States. Federal reserve board statements about factors operating against business progress were likewise given much notice, and so, too, were fresh de clines in the New York stock market and in foreign exchange. The bulls were fur ther handicapped by assertions that esti mates of yesterday's export business had been greatly exaggerated. On the result ing breaks in wheat prices, bouses with eastern connections did a good deal buying. As a rule, however, longs showed an increased desire to liquidate thei: holdings, and with beara .operating mors extensively, rallies failed to last, not' withstanding that country offerings were Ileht. Corn and oata descended lower than at any time heretofore this season. Demand was of only a scattering character. Sham downturns In the provision mar ket were brought about by the weakness of grain and by a decided tumble In the value of hoga The Chicago market letter received yes terday by the Overbeck & Cooke company of Portland follows: -"Wheat With the exception of a. mod erate rally, accompanied by scattered short covering, the market was a weak one throughout the session and closed around bottom flgurea Buying by export interests from time to time served only I to check the downward tendency tempo- I rarily. Liquidation was general and In- creased in volume as the market got into 1 new low ground. The movement of win--, ter wheat is gradually falling off. but spring wheat is taking its place and ar- , rivals at "primary points in the aggregate; are very large. The export demand is i good and so Is the domestic milling in- 1 quiry, but buyers are having little diJfl- I culty in satisfying their wants without bidding up prices. The long side of fu tures has lost its attractiveness, for the time being at least, and we believe It wilr- b good policy to make sales on the bulges. "Corn Futures sold into new low ground, although the liquidation which has been so prominent for several days was less in evidence. The cash market today was without significant feature, the receipts of 257 cars meeting a fair de mand at lower prices. St. Louis reported the cash market weak and 1 cent lower. with a good part of the receipts carried over unsold. Some rather rarge sales have been made for shipment abroad, but we think the supply coming In from the coun try will be fully adequate. Oats reached new low levels during the early trading, but met an improved class of buying and held comparatively steady for the remainder of the day. The cash demand was slightly better than rt has been recently and spot offerings held firmer basia We see little Incentive for a position on the long side in view of the burden of present tremendous stocks. "Rye This market ruled comparatively strong on buying by houses with seaboard connections, presumably against export sales. Cash rye .was inactive at 2 cents under September bid for No. 2 on track."
