THE OREGONIAN NEWS BUREAU, Washington. D. C. Aus. 9. (Special.) "-Thirteen senators from western states today organized a bloc to guard the interests of western industries in the formulation of the new tariff bilW now pending: before the finance com mittee. Senator Frank R. Gooding of Idaho was elected chairman of the organization and an executive com mittee of five was named. On this are' Gooding-, McNary, Oregon; John son, California; Capper, Kansas, and Phipps of Colorado. Other members of the bloc are Sen ators Warren, Wyoming-; Stanfield, Oregon; Oddie, Nevada; Ladd, North Dakota; Shortridge, California: Ken yon, Iowa, and Norbeck, North Da kota. It is proposed that this organization ehall see that the views of the west are. carefully presented to the finance committee on all schedules affecting that section. Senators, who are thor oughly acquainted with its needs, will be assigned to present the case of ach industry. Adequate protection will be sought for all agricultural and horticultural products of the west; also all forest products and every species of mineral output which is en dangered by foreign competition.. MINE EQUIPMENT RUSHED Ollllionalre" Owners Push Work on Kew Water System. GOLD HILT Or., Aug. 9. (Spe cial.) C. A. Knight and S. E. Heb rling, who acquired the Millionaire pold mine, three miles out from Gold Hill, several years ago and1 last year reopened the property, are rushing the. construction of a water system tor the mine. The reservoir of con crete construction is located; on high (ground) and will supply the mill and mine by a gravity pipe line. The dimension of the reservoir is 70 -by i reet, with a depth of 12 feet. The Millionaire mine, an old-time producer, was formerly owned by the iMckean National bank of Terra Haute, Ind., which held It in idle ness for some years, and it is one of the rich mines in the Gold' Hill district which has resumed opera tions with the price of labor and mining equipment and supplies de dining to pre-war scale. The mill equipment consists of two Nissen 1500-pound stamps, fully equipped with amalgamating plates, crusher and concentrating tables, all driven with electric power. Foun dation is laid for another unit of live stamps. PATROL CHIEFS NAMED Oren Loidy AViU Have Charge of "Western. .'WasMng'ton Roads. OLYMPIA, Wash.. Aug. 9. (Spe c'.al.) Announcement was made to day by Major Louis H. Lang- of the appointment of district inspectors of tne new state highway patrol, which was formed August 1. Eugene H. Russell of Spokane will have charge of all stations east of the Cascade mountains. His headquarters will be 'in Spokane. In charge of the western district will be Oren Leidy, who will maintain offices in Olympia and in spect all stations west of the moun tains. . Major Lang- today sent out letters to chiefs of police and sheriffs in the state informing them they must con tinue to function under the state high way laws. He had taken this mat ter up with Chief Tennant of Seattle, who has assured him of his support, and said all persons operating with out drivers' licenses would be appre hended. . One of the things noticed by Major Lang on his recent tour of inspection of the state highways and county roads was that many automo bile owners, east of the mountains are repainting their last years licenses gray and using them for an other year. CATTLE BURNED' IN FIRE (Breezes Make Timber Blaze Hard to Fight iXear Ealama. KALAMA, Wash., Aug. 9. (Spe cial.) Fire, which raged Sunday and all during the night, burned six head of cattle and considerable timber on the Hoffman place, two miles south of Kalama. A crew of men, headed by County Fire Warden Crouch, fought the blaze all night. The dry season and stiff breezes made check ing of fires almost impossible. A (fire Is burning In timber on the Lewis river, near the North Fork .Logging company's plant, and it is reported a railroad trestle has burned. Kires near Carroll's point broke out Sunday, but so far have done little damage. - ' Klre Destroys Logs. . SOUTH BEND, Wash.. Aug. 9. The first disastrous forest fire of the year occurred in this county Sat urday in the logging works of the Olo-be Lumber company near Fran ces. The fire caught from sparks from their locomotive and burned up half a million feet of logs. It is now under control. It did not do much damage to green' timber. 6 0 0,000 Fish Eggs Moved. OHEHALIS. Wash., Aug. 9. (Spe cial.) At the Packwood Lake station 600,000 egg3 have been taken for hatching at the Washington hatch eries by E. A. Lees, in charge of the work. Permanent fish traps will be installed- at Packwood lake by the state fisheries department. More than 20.000 spawn have bean taken to Lost lake, in the Cascade mountains be yond Packwood, and planted. This year there hae been the heaviest travel to Packwood lake known in the history of the upper Cowlitz valley. Kate Expert Resigns (Position. BOISE, Idaho, Aug. 9. (Special.) Leonard Way, chief of transportation of the public utilities commission, to day submitted his; resignation, to be come effective September 17. He has accepted a position as rate expert for the South Idaho Traffic association, a recently organized body of shippers with headquarters at Twin Falls.
