BRIDGE CONTRACT IS LET Span Across Willamette at Oregon City to Cost $213,002; Three Road Locations- Ordered. Sale of $1,500,000 state road bonds was made yesterday to A, M. Wright and associates by the highway com mission. The basis is 6 per cent interest and the premium for the block was 16104. While the members of the commission were not satisfied with the proposal, it was the best offered and assurances were received from financial houses to the effect that money will be 'tight" for another 60 or 0 days. Contract for building; the new bridge across the Willamette river at Oregon City was awarded yester day to A. Guthrie & Co, for $213,602. Award had been delayed pending; an agreement for taking; care of the West Linn water supply during; con struction of the bridge. The town of West Linn will pay $1750 toward building a temporary .support for the line and the state will pay anything above that cost up to J500. The pipe line carries a pressure of 250 pounds. Control of traffic on the old bridge will be assumed by the highway de partment and the big oil tank trucks which have been thundering across the structure will be stopped. About January 1 the present bridge will be torn down and transportation across the river will be provided b local authorities. Tentative Locations Ordered. Three tentative locations wer9 recorded by the commission yester day. Of these one of the moat im portant is a proposed all-winter route between Lakevlew and Bend. The commission has been debating whether to tie In the Lakevlew road with The ralles-Callfornia highway, at Laplne, or to route the road north to strike the central Oregon high way, near Millican, about ten miles east of Bend. A rough survey sub mitted to the commission shows that the north line, making the connec tion near Mlllican, Is ten miles shorter than the Lapine route and will avoid the snow belt. The report unquali fiedly recommended the Milllcan con nection. John Day Surfacing; Ordered. On the John Day highway the com ( mission adopted a location extending ' east from Wain street, in Uayvllle. past the It. A. Ford ranch, connecting with the present road near the Ford residence; then on the south side of the John Day river to the McRae ranch to a point half a mile east of the McRae residence. State Engineer Nunn was ordered to advertlee the surfacing of sections S and 4 of the John Day highway to the end of the present grade near Dayvllle. In Wheeler county the commission ordered advertised the Trading and macadamizing of the John Day highway from Butte creek to Service creek, the work to be fin ished next year. The engineer was ord-ered to surface and finiah the rest cf the John Day highway in Wheeler county east of Service creek and keep the road in condition for travel dur ing the coming winter. At the Juls meeting the commission 'ordered ad vertising the grading and rocking be tween Fossil and Cummings hill on the John Day highway. If the county cannot sell its bonds for its share of this two-mile Improvement the etate will advance the money, accept ing the county bonds as security. Surfacing of the Crooked River highway, between Prinevllle and the mouth of Bear creek, was ordered advertised. This is to be done to pro tect the grade. The maximum amount for the work is placed at 12,000. The surfacing is to be eight feet in oeptn. Co-operation Promised Legion. Request wa received from the American Legion that only American citizens be employed on state high way work. The commission explained that, while In sympathy with the sug gestion, such a hard-and-fast rule should be made by the legislature and not by a commission. The com mission offered to co-operate with the American Legion as far as possi ble in seeing that citizens are given employment in preference to aliens. The representative of the legion said lie realized that contractors based their bids on employing foreign labor end that they had to bid low to get contracts. The representative fur ther said that the wage was less than citizens want to work for, and that there are kinds of work in which former aervice men are unskilled, but that there must be many citizens qualified to fill the positions. Redress of the Roosevelt highway south, in Tillamook county, five miles, was awarded to the Warren Construction company yesterday. Con tract for grading the Turn Tum Chitwood section of the Corvallis Newport highway, 9.71 miles, was also awarded yesterday to Horning, Ma lone & McKay. Middle AVest Optimistic.
