THE MORXIXG OREGOXIAX, TUESDAY, JFXE 21, 1921- STOCK LOSSES SEVERE HEAVY SEULIXG LEADS TO VIO LENT DECLINES. Greatest "Weakness in Speculative Group Kails Forfeit One to Four Points. KEW YORK, June V Another wave f liquidation saepi the slock market to day. Many important shares were driven to lowest quotations for five to -0 years. The decline was more violent than any movement last week, being accompanied by a turnover of l.L'Si.OUO shares. Con fident operations of the short Interest contributed to lite demoralisation. Investment rails figured conspicuously. Canadian Pacific extended last. Saturday's break of five p'olnts with an additional loss of four point? to lul, its minimum juotation eince 1901. Other gilt edged rails, nolablv Union Pacific. Readins and Norfolk & Western, tosether with a score of Junior or reorganized issues, forfeited one to four point. Greatest weakness was manuesica however, by steel, railway equipments, sila motors, shippings, tobaccos and In tA ..nun SpurM-K.ebuck. May Depart ment Stores and Famous Players helped to swell the reaction, which culminated with another break in Mexican Petroleum. United states Steel made ls lowest ot m rears in the final dealings, falling to Tl a loss nf 34 DOlntA. Pall mnnev nuenerl at 5t4 per cent, bu eased to five toward the close. Time rates were ouotably unchanged, but .ot rrln? were scarce. Foreign exchanges were mixed. British French. BeicTan and German rates eased. but Dutch, Italian. Swir, Scandinavian and central European bills held firm to strong. Liberty bonds and most foreign wa flotations were not materially affected by the w eakness of stocks, but domestic ralis, especially convertible bonds, were heavy, Total gales, par value, 11,40,000. Wheat underwent a sharp setback in price today, largely as a resu of depression in the New York stock market and In cotton as well. The close In wheat was heavy. 3 to 4 cents net lower, with July $1.24 to $1.25 and September $1.20 to $1.20Vi. Corn finished tC to c down, oats unchanged to c off and provisions up 2M( to 20 cents. Lack of confidence, which seemed to have grabbed the majority of buyers, proved to be much more than an oflset for bullish field sjdvlces from the spring crop belt, and for disappointing harvest returns from the winter crop. Bulls were handicapped to the greatest extent by the general unsettling-influence of the action of stocks and cotton, but in -addition the prevailing favorable weather for harvest ing was an inducement to sell, whichwas emphasized by record-breaking receipts at Hutchinson, Kan., 168 cars, and by the fact that new wheat was beginning to ar rive in Kansas City. Besides, export de mand was slow. With a substantial in-1 crease shown in the visible supply total, buyers -continued to back away throughout the late dealings... Absence of rain tended to check weak ness in the corn market, and thereby to help sustain oats. Provisions ranged higher with hogs. board that there was no export business doing. .Cash rye was .nominally steady at 2fiSc over July. . Leading futures ranged as follows: WHEAT. July.. Sept; . July. Alt upturns In consequence were quickly erased and at the close prices were onl slightly above the low point. Consid erable selling was indulged in. based on the idea that an early and liberal move ment of new wheat will mean a material reduction in the premiums now being paid. There Isr little indication of a bur densome movement, in fact the persis tent advices to the effect that yields are proving very disappointing might have a tendency to encourage holding on the farms. Country offerings to arrive were much smaller and receivers advanced their bids to arrive 1 cent despite the lowering of spot premiums in Chicago. All mesiages Irom tne nortnwest 1010. 01 rain oemg urgently needed with considerable better condition having already taken place. The bullish reports were fully confirmed by the weeklv summary of the department of agriculture. it can be readily seen lha prevailing conditions, as far aa the cereal Itself is concerned, are not conducive lower prices, but for' the time being the financial unsettlement -promised to coun teract all other Influences. Corn Trade was mixed with the mar ket showing independent firmness, but bullish, enthusiasm held in check by the weakness In wheat. It is very apparent, however, . that the situation which hangs over the wheat market will be or lltt:e moment in coarse grains which have already undergone thorough deflation. On receipts of os cars casn prices at one time were 1 cent lower, but showed con siderable strength and the close only frac tionally lower than Saturday. The ship ping demand was fairly active with sales of 150.000 bushels. The increase of little over 1.000.000 bushels In the visible sup ply did not come up to expectations. Country offerings to arrive show indica tions of decreasing. Oats The decline In the market was entirely in sympathy with wheat and in way was contrary to the general news. The department of . agriculture in its weekly report made a very prominent statement by saying that the final out come will be very likely a short crop.
