Barber, state fire marshal, and his n.nMntiitiv(a of the state fire marshal's department, together with persons connected with the Oregon insurance rating bureau, -held a meeting here last week when the proposed new code was discussed. This code is now being prepared by the state fire marshal and will .be ready to place In the hands of the enforcement officers by July 1. The code will deal particularly with' the storage of gasoline and other explosives, and an effort will be made so to guard these inflam mables that fires from their source will be almost Impossible. Garage construction also will be featured In the new code. Mr. Barber said today that under the rules and regulations to be adopted by his department, fir losses in Oregon should be reduced from 15 to 25 per cent. The members of second company of the coast artillery, Oregon national guard of Jllarshfield. will be the guests of company C, 5th infantry, of the guard, at a dance here tomorrow night. The coast company is expected to reach here tomorrow afternoon on the way to Camp Lewis, and both companies will leave on an early train Wednesday. BUDGET BLANKS COMPILED Frank Meredith Employed to Work Out Preliminary Details. SALEM. Or., June 13. (Special.) Frak Meredith, former secretary of the state fair board, has been em ployed by Sam A. Kozer, secretary of state, to prepare the necessary blanks for putting Into operation the state budget commission, created undr an act of the 1921 legislature. Under this law the commission will compile biennial estimates of expenditures for all state depart ments. The new commission is expected to eliminate much of the confusion that has confronted the ways and means committee of the legislature In years past, ana greatly simplify the work or the heads of state departments. PAPER TRUCKJS BURNED Fire Caused From Short-Circuit De- lays Regular Sunday Delivery. SALEM, Or, June 13. (Special.") Igniting from a short circuit, fire early Sunday destroyed almost com pletely the truck carrying The Sun day Oregonian from Portland to Salem and other Willamette valley points. The fire occurred on the Pacific highway a short distance from Hubbard. Most of 'the papers, which were tied in bundles, were saved by the driver of the truck. Another truck was obtained fol lowing the fire and the papers ar rived in Salem shortly after 8 o'clocjc. Usually the papers .reach ' Salem shortly after 5 o'clock In the morn ing and are delivered . before the breakfast hour. Police Searching for Girls. SALEM, Or.. June 13. (Special.) Police today were searching for Ger trude Haynes. 17, and Marguerite Moriaty. 18, who escaped from the state home for the feeble-minded last night. Both girls were said to reside in Portland. ABERDEEN, Wash., June 13.- (Speclal.) Transfer of the seven I. W. W. members convicted of the Centralia armistice day murders from the Grays Harbor county Jail at Montesano to the state penitentiary at W alia Walla is expected in the next few days, following receipt yes terday by the sheriff of a remittitur from the state supreme court author izing delivery of the prisoners. The men to be transferred are Britt SmitB. O. C. Bland. Ray Becker, James Mclnereney, Bert Bland, John Lamb and Eugene Barnett., Each is sentenced to between 25 and 40 years' imprisonment.
