THE MORNING. QREGOXIAX, TUESDAY, JUNE 14, 1921 v nLL uuunn niniiiiLiu A COfJTINUE TO FALL Local Jobbers Announce Drop of 35 Cents Hundred. BUYING IS AT . MINIMUM Supplies 31ore Than Sutfjclent for Remainder of Year and Fair Sized Surplus Probable. AH grades of refined suear were re dacted 34 cents a hundred yesterday on re celpt of word from California refiner of a similar decline there. The drop has been expected since the eastern market began going off last week. The new local quotations are 17.15 on cane granu lated and $6.95 on beet. Consumption here has become somewhat heavier with the home canning season now under way, bnt in view of the weakness of the mar ket, retailers are not buying beyond their Immediate needs. The general depression In the sugar sit uation is explained by a leading authority Id the trade as follows: "Conditions now prevalent In the rogaf market continue1 adverse to any feeling of optimism, but as a matter of fact in dicate that the demoralization still exists and that the depression has not as yet run its course. The weignt 01 supplies annarently becoming more burdensome. especially - as distributors and consumers appear intent on maintaining an attltuas 'of indifference and one of covering re quirements only as needed. This hand-to-mouth policy of buying is not only ap plicable to this . country, but to the re mainder of the world where financial an economic conditions are far less satisfac tory than here. Cnder such conditions producers are forced to carry the entire burden of supplies and their distressed sit uation Is being Intensified. A survey of the statistical position gives assurance of more than sufficient supplies for the re mainder of the year, and In fact prospects of a fair-siied surplus, especially should consumption continue along the present restricted lines. It Is becoming more evi dent that the entire world economic situa tlon Is steadilyrevertlng to pre-war con ditlons, but summing up the situation 1n sugar, the main force at work in the market is the Inevitable law of suppl and demand.' NEW YORK, June 33. The raw sugar market was nominal early today. In re. fined, prices were 25 to 30 points lower, with all refiners now listing at 6 cents for fine granulated, or the lowest price recorded In four years. cartons, S4o Butterfat, buying price: A grade, 27c; B- grade, 28c, Portland de livery. The general re action of the last four weeks was auo stantially extended In the early and inter mediate stages ' of today's stock market. but a sharp recovery occurred and many speculative favorites replaced losses of 1 to 5 points with actual gains of the same amount. Shorts figured prominently In the morn ing's reversal, but their operations appar ently were secondary to the liquidation of holders of long stocks, notable steels and equipments. , Other elements ef weakness Included .oils, shippings, sugar, tobaccos, chemicals and utilities at gross declines ot 2 to points. Motors and their accessories trailed at more moaerstie recessions.' Many railroad shores until recently re g&rded as investment issues were offered. Northern Pacific and Great Northern, on which dividend action was soon expected, were smong the few stocks to manifest lltle. recuperative power. The final hour's recoil was laid to tech nlcal conditions. Leaders included Stude baker, Mexiaan Petroleum, American Sugar and American Woolen. Sales were 1,063,- 000 shares. The money market was quiet and easy. All call loans were mads at 6 per cent, probably because of last week's large gain in clearing house reserves. only a mod erate inquiry for brokers' loans and cpm mercial paper was reported. British. French and other important for eign exchanges were firm or steady, the only noteworthy exceptions being Dutch, Swiss and Scandinavian rates. . Private cables from London referred hopefully U the British coal strike. Liberty bonds were heavy with uneven tendencies in other . domestic issues. Due June 15, 1941 Callable t 115 The business of this company is done principally through, its 8000 stockholder agents (Rexall Stores) and its 227 "Liggett Drug Stores." The combined sales of the company and its subsidiaries during 1920 totaled $68,428,179. Annual sinking fund of $750,000 , to purchase these bonds at the market up to 115. ' Net earnings for past three years have averaged, after taxes, $3,894,630 exceeding 3& times inter - est charges on this issue of $15,000,000 which will represent the total funded debt. The company retailing its remedies through its own stores has bad a remarkable career since its. business was originated in 1902. These bonds are convertible jnto Common Stock of the company at $110 per share at holder's option if exercised by June 15, 1931. The con version privilege may become very valuable. The present market value of the. company's out standing stock approximates $45,000,000 against these $15,000,000 bonds. It is reasonable to expect that long before five years have elapsed market conditions for money ''will permit refunding such of this loan as may be then outstanding on a 6 basis, if not con siderably better. Assuming for illustration that a 6 funding opportunity may exist five years hence these 8 bonds would have a value of lf9.60 to earn 6 for the remaining fifteen years, under which circumstances st would be a great advantage to the company to call them in at 115. These bonds will be listed on the New York and Boston stock exchanges. 20-year 8's at lOO Republic of France Due June 1, 1941 No-CaIlable These bonds are non-callable and can be held by you to earn 8 for full twenty years. The sink ing fund of a minimum of $750,000 monthly dur ing the first five years for purchasing bonds of this issue in the market op to par and interest assures a high market value and ready con vertibility if desired. i These bonds offer an extraordinary investment opportunity. The recuperative powers of France were demonstrated following the Franco-Prussian War, from which it recovered with astonishing rapidity. Ite present recovery, commercially and financially, is equally astonishing. French credits in the markets of the world have increased sufficiently since the close of the war to permit its liquidating about $540,000,000 of foreign debt and at the same time to improve the dollar exchange value of tke franc by about 30. During the first three months of this year the exports of France exceeded its imports by 129, 000,000 francs as compared with an adverse trade balance of 4,872,000,000 francs for the corre sponding three months of 1920. An indication of the possible future market value of these 79i bonds is offered by the history of the French 5s which in 1870 sold at 82 and in 1872 at 84 Vi. These bonds advanced in price as follows: In 1874 to 100;. in 1875 to 106; in 1878 to 116; and in 1880 to 120.85. These bonds will b listed on the New York Stock Exchange. 20-yesir 7Ws at 95' There are no bonds on the market at this time that offer a more desirable investment opportunity from the standpoint of security, marketability and enhancement of value. As much as 6 cents bushel in some casea was added to values before tie eagerness to purchase was over come. Then the maraet ocgan to sn snd attention turned largely to gossip tha country offerings had materially increased The fact, too, gained notice that hot dry weather tended to facilitate rapid progress of the harvest, even though leading to in jury where growth was still needed. Bears made much also! of seaboard messages telling of lack of export business and of foreign offers to resell. Profit taking by holders showed a lull in the final half hour and the market was raj lying at the last. Corn and oats obtained their strength from the action of wheat. Demand came chiefly from shorts. Provisions were irregular. Influenced on the one side by lower hog values and on the other by the upturn in grain. The Chicago market letter received yes terday by the Overbeck & Cooke company ec Cortland said: Wheat New high levels on the crop were made Immediately after the opening on buying or a general character, prompt ed by apprehensive reporta on the crop situation in the northern part of the winter wheat belt and southern spring wheat territory. Black rust is said to be showing up very heavy in northern Ne. braska and many of our foremost thorltics expressed the belief that it may spread to the big spring wheat producing territory. About midday the market weakened, due to ease in the local cash market, where premiums were Quoted cents lower. Little credence was given to reports that exporters were trying to can eel wheat for deferred shipment, as there was evidence of buying for foreign ac count on the late decline. The weakness in premiums today shouldbe ne surprise as futures have advanced rapidly and it Is only natural that there should be least some readjustment, between cash and futures. We look for the market to re spond readily to any -bad crop news from the northwest. Corn Advanced sharply early In the day. but met realising selling in sufficient volume to give the market an easier tone. Receipts of 598 cars were less than peeted and cash prices quoted relatively steady. There was export buying on the break, but the volume of business was not given out up to the close. This market Is steadily working into a strong position and when crop scares begin to make their appearance a substantial advance is very likely to bs registered Oats The early advance attracted profit taking selling in good volume, but offer ings were well taken and the tone of the market at the clous was strong. Practically all advices from the country continue to tell of poor prospects, Rye Futures were Inactive anarollowed the action ot wheat. The cash demand was not good and as a result prices were about 6 cents lower on the basis of 12 cents over July for No. 2 on track. Leading futures ranged as xouows: WHEAT. Oeen. High. Tyw.
