TIIE MORNING OREGOXIAN, TUESDAY, JUNE 14, 1921 PS. BEGGS PLEADS f FOR SCHOOL UPLIFT Educational and Industrial In ; terests Declared One. :HIGHER PLANE IS WANTED Candidate for Director Counsels - Vision in Selection of Leaders ' , to Guide Children. H Building for the future was urged yesterday upon the Chamber of Com iiierce at the meeting of the mem X bers' forum by Mrs. James Beggs, '-candidate for election to the school board at next Saturday's election. J, She said school children of today are ' the citiiens of a very few years hence T"nd the industrial and commercial - community of the future is abelng molded now. In this sense, she " said, it was highly important that Chamber of Commerce members take J, thought of their school officials and - aue to it that the trust Is placed In capable hands. - - Mrs. Begga said that if the mem- bers of the chamber would consult their own interests they would not a refuse to exercise their duty as clti 5 sens, but would cast their votes for capable directors next Saturday when 5 the opportunity to choose four mem- tera of the board is afforded. lftgber Standards Held In Reach. Higher standards of citizenship in future, said Mrs. Beggs. are in the hands of those who control affairs today. If this power Is used with vision and mature judgment, she said, the results would be certain and for the ultimate good of all. No super structure, she said, was safe unless the foundations were laid with care and thoroughness, and this was Just the opportunity of today. Good schools were declared to be the evidence of good business sense and industrial acumen, since they . were planned to fill a definite place in community life, and unless this ob . Jcct were attained, there was a seri ous lack, the effects of which would . .be regretted later. In behalf of her own candidacy, -.Mrs. Beggs said the home and school were so closely allied and women played such a prominent part in , both that it was only natural the influence of woman be recognized on the school board. Mrs. Beggs re ceived a careful hearing by the forum and it was believed she made a most . favorable impression. Festival Balance S2S00. O. W.
