UO 30.00 Prices Posted on Local Board Are Cncbanged From Saturday. Coarse Grain Is Dull. There was no inducement for wheat buy ers to enter the market yesterday. The fall In sterling exchange, amounting to 44 cents to the pound, created an uneasy feeling and exporters, therefore, put out no bids. Other buyers held back and the country reported inactive conditions. In some sections farmers offered wheat, but they wanted the prices of several days ago. At the Merchants' Exchange ses sion the only bids were on hard white, oft white and white club, and they were the same as Saturday. The coarse grain market was also dull. July white feed oats were II lower on bid and July No. 2 corn was also down II. The weather In the east was unsettled and warmer. Snow's report on Nebraska was Inclined to be bullish. Reports from a number of points In Iowa were that crops are looking fine. A dispatch from Kansas City said: "Freak weather for this season and the finding of a million acres of wheat in Kansas by. assessors, raises estimates on the Kansas wheat crop about 25,000,000 bushels. The section where heavy abandoned acrease was expected 10 days ago Is given 6 to 10 bushels per acre. Hirv, is beginning here and south, and expect good movement of new wheat by the 2.1th. Farmers are free sellers at II and above." Terminal receipts. In cars, were reported br the Merchants Exchange as follows: Portland Monday Wheat. The heavier receipts following the two day holiday at the opening of the past week were readily absorbed in the eastern butter markets. Deliveries were scattered over Wednesday. Thursday the market held firm and improved during the week under active storage buying. Chicago was firmest and most active from the storage viewpoint, but the east showed a much more consistent tone. Prices advanced somewhat during the week and unless the market advanced too sharply. It looks like a continued good market. Demand was chiefly for fine centralised cars, top grade creamery, fine unsalted and sweet cream butter. On several days over 1,000.000 pounds of butter at the four markets went into storage each day. The Increase is ' three times greater than for the same week last year, due to the advanced sea son. Receipts and production are also above last week and last year, but It looks near the peak. The recent hot weather hurt the quality, but good consumptive demand cleaned up undergrades very nice ly. Passage of the emergency tariff has also helped the market. No Danish but ter was reported purchased or en route. The butter market continued firm dur ing the entire week at San Francisco and 92 score advanced 1C Trading was eiuite active, both before the holiday and at the close of the week. Local con sump tlve demand was good and storage buying Increased at the end of the week. The firm and advancing San Francisco market attracted butter from Oregon. Nevada and Colorado, which caused no surplus on dealers' floors, but made total receipts show an Increase. Dealers generally do not expect much lower prices this season and the closing tone was very firm. Latest available reports show cold storage hold ings in Seattle, Portland. Los Angeles and Fan Francisco at 1.767,817 pounds as com pared with 1.870 808 pounds the previous week and 1.998.707 pounds in 1920. XGQ BUYERS FAF HIGHER . PRICE Twenty-two Cents Offered for Receipts From Country Butter Is Firm. Kgga were firm and higher again yes terday. Buyers paid 22 cents for receipts from the country and resales were made an the street at 23 eents case count. All white, large eggs brought the usual pre mium. Shipping orders from the south re still being filled. Butter continued firm at Saturday's prices with a continued demand from lo cal etorers and to ship to California. Cube extras moved at 27 and 27 Va cents. In the city trade prints were fairly active at the 32-cent basis. . The poultry market was weak with good receipts and a slow demand. There were a few. sales of light hens at IS cents, but retailers generally were not disposed to pay over 13 cents. The top on heavy liens was 20 cents. Country dressed meats were steady. Teal was In better demand and 144 cents was obtainable. Receipts of pork were light. STRAWBERRIES AT I.OWEB . PRICES Supply Prove to Be Larger Than City Trade Can Absorb. The supply of strawberries yesterday was more than the city trade could take care of and prices dropped sharply. Start ing around S- at the opening prices worked down until at the close- of the day ales were made as low as $1: The bulk of the business was probably at $1,239 1.50. Berries held over from Saturday sold In some instsnces at 60 cents a crate. Cantaloupes were more plentiful and cheaper at $6.50 for standards and $5.S0 for pony crates. The first watermelons were en the mar ket and brought 6 cents a pound loose and T cents crated. Another shipment of California peaches arrived and cleaned up at 1202.50 a box. Unsettling effects of the break In for eign exchange rates was apparent In wheat, although "rallies took place shortly after the opening and Just before the close. The first upturn was due to lib eral buying by a big firm that was in re ceipt of bullish crop advices from Ne braska. Crop reports from Kansas and Oklahoma, however, were bearish, and the market turned downward again, intluenced by assertions that foreigners were trying to resell and that fresh export business was slow. On the other hand, .word be came current near the close that 500,000 bushels had been sold for shipment to Thl news led to something of a bulge, but failed to wipe out entirely the nervousness due to the flurry in ex- ehanae.
