13 THE MORXIXG OREGOXIAX, MONDAY. JUNE 6,' 1921 .BUSINESS OF PORT IS m j 00,000 Tons Increase Over fcj . .1920 Is Shown. STRIKE LOWERS RECORD Trad Better Than in Same JlonUi Last Year, According to Mer chants' Exchange. In spite of strike conditions which held up many vessels and caused a temporary tie-up of a large percent age of the coasters operating in and out of this port, tonnage entering and tonnage clearing from Portland har bor for the month of May aggregated more than 100,0-00 in excess of the tonnage for the same mont h last year, according to figures compiled yesterday by the Merchants' Exchange. The total tonnage of vessels enter ing and those clearing for May, 1921, was shown to have aggregated 326, 209 compared with a tonnage of 196, 096 for the moth of May, 1920. Dur ing May of this year the number of ships entering and clearing amounted to 10 comp4ared with 108. Strike Keeps Down Tonnage. If the coasters had not to a large extent been held up by the strike, it was believed that the number of ahips for May of this year would have been greatly In excess of the number for the same month last year, and in addition the tonnage figures would probably have been more than doubled. Aggregate tonnage, of vessels en tering the clearing for the first rive months of this year was shown by the Merchants' Exchange table to have been nearly double the tonnage for the same period last year. Dur ing the first five months of the year chips entering and those clearing Portland harbor amounted to 658 with an aggregate tonnage of 1.TS1, 052. Ships entering and clearing for the first five months of last year numbered 525, with a tonnage of 929,224. Foreign Commerce Increases. It Is in the development of the for ieign commerce of ti.e Port of Port land that the most remarkable in crease has been shown. Tonnage of vessels entering and clearing this port in the foreng trade was nearly three times as great for the first five months of this year as for the same period last year, and the num ber of ships was more than double. The table showed that ships entering and those clearing for the first five months of this year amounted to 147, with an aggregate tonnage of 627, S55. The number for the eame period last year was 71, with a ton nage of 219,435. There is an increase in the do mestic commerce, although it is not mo great. Ships entering and those clearing In the domestic commerce of the port for the five-month period this year numbered 611. with a ton nage of 1.153,197. For the same period last year the figures were 454 ships with a tonnage of 709,794. Tonnage entering and tonnage clearing for the month of May this year in foreign business aggregated 122.167 compared with 70,322 last year. In the domestic business for May the tonnage this year was 204, 042 compared with. 125,724 for last year. coast was under the usual, with 3.650.000 feet. Grays Harbor during the month of May established one record for tself in coastwise shipping, that of cargoes to the Atlantic seaboard. Six steam ers took a total of 10,671,043 feet of lumber to the Atlantic side, according to figures of the Grays Harbor Steve dore company. In all only 19 vessels cleared last month, against 39 in April, which was a direct result of the strike, shipping men feel. One reason for the larger shipments to the Atlantic during the strike period was that the ships came to the Pacific with a crew signed for the round trip. The 19 ships carried away 21,945.633 feet of lumber from Hoquiam and Aberdeen. Two ships took 1,224.304 feet of lumber to foreign ports, and two cleared for Honolulu carrying 1,380. 286 feet. Raw material was contracted ror and we had to take it and now we are selling lots ot paint and putting a lot more on roofs, with our large force of roof painters and our superior equip ment, but we still find a great quantity remains to be moved out of the storage and this is what we propose to do during the rose carnival weeK. we win sell the paint in any quantity from a gallon to 100 barrels even below pre war prices and will give you choice of black, brown or red. The celebrated black satin Webfoot paint has never been sold below the regular atanuara price at any time before.
