THE' MORNING OltEGOXIAN, TUESDAY. MAY- 17. 1031 ' CLEAN NOP PICKING WILL BE WECESSARY cars over th. shipments In the correspond ing period last year. Local receipts of poultry and dressed meats were light and Saturday's prices prevailed. . IBM LIBERTY BONDS Leading London Buyer Says . : Quafity Must Improve. - COAST GROWERS WARNE0 i ' Rejections, Regardless of Contract Price, Will Follow Attempts to Deliver Cnsalable Grades. -' I Dealers who are handling- hops have realized tor some time that the quality of ' the crop rn the coming season must be better than that of last year if the growers ars to avoid trouble. . Complaints from ' receivers of 1920 hops were numerous and a repetition of such deliveries, the con '' timers say, will result in the rejection of ; the hops, whether they are contracted for at a high or a low price. A large portion , of the cominf crop has been sold for de- livery In England and the buyers on that . side have issued a fair warning that they will not accept hops that are badly picked y or are otherwise of inferior quality. ' A letter from George Bird Co., of London, has just been received by R. E. Williams, which warns Pacific coast hop , rrowers of what they may expect. The letter follows: "As a tesult of many years' work to overcome prejudices, a large trade has been established in the product of these hop yards for use in English breweries. The essential to this trade Is that the ' hops should be good quality wall grown ' and carefully picked. This has generally been carried out satisfactorily, but a rude shock hat been administered during the - past season, by the carelessness of the cultivation and disgraceful picking. If ' this Is the result of making contracts far a term of years it is a ruinous and short ' sighted policy. Whether value Is higher or lower at time of delivery should make - no difference. Buyers here do not spec uiate, but pass all purchases n o con sumers as made. Unless your growers realise this, they had better give up ths ' business. "During the period your country has been dry' the Pacific coast hop growers would ha1 been driven out but for the English ! brewers, and it is as well for them to re- member this. i sent 'on contract this season are not , wanted here and are entirely unsalabl It kills the demand for further supplies. i "The continent of Europe is also a large : producer. In Belgium, France and Ger ; many the conditions are fully realised that i good clean picked bops areVabsolutely nec- ' assary. and they study the English buyers , accordingly. "Another important point for your grow ers to guard against is the state of roofs of their hop lofts. In wet weather during baling many of the loose hops get damaged by the dfips from leaky roofs. Wherever these wet hops get Into the bales, sweat ing, heating and bad discoloration is caused. Unfortunately there have been many so damaged this season and which en arrival here give serious trouble ' to ' buyers, as naturally the brewers will hot i accept them. ' "We hope your growers will seriously consider the position before another tea' i son ana give tneir neei endeavors to pro J dues crops about which there need be ne complaint, and will heist to regain the confidence of consumers here.
