21 TIIE 3I0RXING OKEGOXIAX, FRIDAY, MAT 13, 1921 m LIS SEUIM6 READILY Washington Product Moves at Last Week's Prices. OREGON MARKET IS QUIET Steady Tone or Values Contrasts With Weakness Earlier In Year. , Ken Tariff May Help. There hare been further rales of new cl! Washington wools at the prices that were paid last week. The buying was of scattered clips and the aggregate was of fair dimensions. No trading In the new Oregon clip has been reported. The tone of the market Is considered quite steady, which contrasts with the wcakne.-s that prevailed earlier In the year. The passage of the emergency tariff bill is gratifying to growers and dealers alike. Whether or not it results in higher prices of wool, it should at least have a stabilizing effect on the market. In commenting on the steady improve ment in the Knglish wool market, a lead ing London dealer writes: "Sull there is no doubt that the real etate of the Industry Is gradually be coming healthier, and there exists an un dercurrent of Influence making for Im provement, which Is steadily gaining In force and recognition, stocks of merino and fine crossbred tops are extremely low In Yorkshire. Gradual liquidation is go ing on In every section of teetrade, and, with the removal of old high-priced goods, the way Is being cleared for replacement on safer levels. Financial difficulties are being readjusted arter the disorganization and anxiety caused by the sudden drop in values. The burden ot costs of pro duction and freights Is gradually decreas ing and there are signs of easier and cheaper monetary conditions. The effect of all these factors, is slow but cumulative, the general trend being toward a sure relief." JSC! slum will Import about 60,000,000 pounds of wool during the year 1921, of which 80 per cent will be fine wool, 15 per cent medium grade and 5 per cent low grade, according to estimates sub mitted by the American consul at Ant werp, the wool market for Belgium. This represents a decrease of 50 per cent In Im ports compared with the pre-war figure. The pre-war imports of raw wool were about 120,000.000 pounds. A large pro portion of this was re-exported after scour ing and carbonizing and a smaller amount was exported in the form of yarn and manufactures of wool. During 1020 Bel gium Imported about 00.000,000 pounds, which was about T5 per cent of the pre war figure. The Belgian wool trade Is largely de pendent on British orders for woolen yarns and on the export of scoured and carbon ized wools and wastes to Germany. Any Improvement that may take place in the general situation of those countries will, therefore, exert a favorable Influence upon the Belgian Import trade, Belgian wool merchants, however, do not expect im ports to exceed 60.000.000 pounds during the period April 1, 1921, to March 81. 1022. The stock mar ket today experienced its fourth setback this week, further liquidation and pro fessional selling In fairly large volume being accompanied by decidedly firmer money tendencies. Heavv withdrawals of funds from local institutions to meet demands of the fed eral government doubtless occasioned tne higher rate for call money, which opened at 7 per cent and remained there. Time monev was unchanged. Foreign exchange made further substan tial response to the German reparations settlement. Demand bills on ionaon touched $4, their best quotation since April of last year, and equal or greater atrength was shown by all otner remit tances. German marks shared in the rise and an advance of 4i of a cent waa shown in the Greek rate. Industrial shares comprising the steel, equipment and motor groups registered extreme declines of one to three points. Some rails were under pressure. Repre sentative oils were less resilient than at any recent period. Tobaccos and several utilities, especially gas stocks, featured the few stable issues. Sales were 850,000 'shares. International bonds held firm on the better tone of the exchange market, bul domestic Issues were Irregular, although liberty bonds showed net gains for the most part. CHICAGO, May 12. Wheat prices showed a downward tendency today, owing largely to the fact that crop reports appeared less unfavorable than has been the rule of late. The market closed nervous, to lc net lower, with May $1.43 to $1.48 and July $1.1 to $1.16. Corn lost to c, oats to c and provisions 6 to 20 cents. . Besides having an advantage as to crop advices, the bears in wheat were able to put stress on higher rates for money and heaviness in the stock market, as well as upon slowness of export demand and upon talk that Argentine, shipping troubles would soon be settled. Passage of the emergency tariff bill in the senate gave values a little support early, but the effect of the senate action seemed mostly to have been discounted in advance. Indications of frost tonight were also without much In fluence in favor of the hulls On the otner nand, reports of strained industrial conaitions in ureat Britain attracted some unfavorable notice, domestic rural offer. ings were small and lack of outside spec- uian.e interest was a subject of comment Cora and Oats veni eaeler with what although steadied more or less by a fairly uomeauc snipping call for corn and " igns or a falling. off in receipts. r-roviions reflected the weakness of orapue nigner quotations on hogs .. .u.autuuiug gossip or, a netter ex port demand. ... The Chicago market letter received yea Vily., y he Overoeck ft Cooke company .1. J1 I" r "howlnff strength early In tne day, based, on passage of the emergency tariff bill by the senate; the market dis played inherent weakness and responded it, uennsn news, crop reports were de- more xavorsble. beneficial rains oaving raiien in, sections of the southwest Where needed. A leading northwestern authority said spring wheat seeding this year is about three weeks ahead of nor inal and the crop In fine shape. The cash markets generally had a weak tone, with premiums in Chicago further reduced. Ex port buying waa conspicuous by its ab sence and milling interests were reported as buying only on a hand to mouth basis. A disturbing element was the tone of for eign cables regarding the British strike situation, which now appeara likely to spread Into a general strike if today's news should prove true. Broomhall's cable in timated that the United Kingdom has enough wheat on the way to satisfy re quirements for some- time and reported Bulgaria preparing to offer quantities of grain to importing countries of Europe. The outlook appears to have changed and is now suggestive of lower prices. Corn The feeling in this market was more mixed and many traders showed reluctance- to .follow tbe advance with fur ther purchases on account of the con tinued selling by cash interests, apparently in the nature of purchasea of cash grain in the country. Offerings to arrive, how ever, were reported as only moderate. Spot prices were a shade lower,, although the trading basis was firm. The -export de mand, which has been, so conspicuous for the past two weeks, was not in evidence today and the tendency of the trade is to await developments in this connection. Oats Pessimistic crop reports continue to come forward, which tended to restrict selling and in consequence prices held relatively better than other gVains. Buy ing on the declines was mainly by cash in terests. Shipping sales reported were 175, 000. all domestic. Rye Selling of July rye against pur chases of July wheat was the outstanding feature in this market. Cash rye was steady, with No. 2 on track selling at May price against 1 cent premium yesterday. Exporters bid 30 cents over July for No. 2 c. I. f. Buffalo, but' no' Bales were re ported. Leading futures ranged as follows: WHEAT. Open. High. Low.
