THE MORNING OREGONIAN, THURSDAY, MAY 13, 1921 JETTER TONE NOTED ' IN HIDE MARKETS I Freer Movement in Packer Grades in East. COUNTRY STOCK IS DRUG Demand May Xot Kevlve Here Cn til There Is Larger Call for Poorer Classes of Leather. There was nothing doine la the eastern bide markets until the latter part of the past week, when Quite a lot of packer hide moved at advances of cent per pound on the various branded selection!. Packer calf also advanced 2 cents per pound, and this will no doubt have Its effect on prices tor the Chicago city kins, and in turn help the country market. Mixed lots of country and city calf are selling in Chicago at 15 cents. Skins In this section, said George M. Sul livan, of th Portland Hide ft Wool com pany, are sold in that class. Locally 12 cents has been paid for some days for Portland city calf, and 10 cents is the going price on country butcher lots. sir. Sullivan said: This big movement in packer hides in the east has cleaned up stocks to April 1. and some April hides have moved at prices which seem higher, but really just .bout offset the difference in quality be tween winter and later take-off. "Country hides are still a drug or. the market and probably will not be wanted by the eastern tanners until such time as they can move leather for export When i this will be nobody knows. In this sec tion 4 cents Is being paid for butcher liides free of grubs and 3 cents for the rubbles, f. o. b. shipping point and these same prices for farmer hides with the freight to Portland deducted. "The very best middle western extremes, free of grubs, are selling at around 10 cents, Chicago, and buffs and heavies are slow to sell at 7 cents to 8 cents for Io. 3s. Tanners are only In the market for goods close to home and do not as yet care to buy Pacific coast stock, wnere it takes so long to get the raw stock to the tannery. In other words, it is still hand to month proposition with the tan ners, and we will have to see a better demand for the poorer grades of leather before the coast market for country lyncher hides will be materially affected. Stocks In butchers' hands in Oregon. Washington and Idaho are very heavy and butchers are showing more inclination to clean up at current prices with the ad vent of warmer weather.4 age stocks of dairy and poultry' products at Portland and Seattle compare as fol lows: At Portland This wn. . i.t ti Butter, lbs..... 28,8l Cheese, lbs 29.4H7 Eggs, cases 41,702 Poultry, lbs 75,811 At Seattle Butter, lbs 2S.SR1 Cheese, pounds 29.417 Eggs, cases 41.752 Poultry, lbs 75.811 10,611 S1.S.! 3.l:l 70,0 43.S: 26.41)8 28.-'-l 12,s08 Bank Clearings. There was considerable cloudiness during the week, with occasional rain, and gen eral rain was in progress in western counties as the week closed, says the weekly crop report of the weather bureau. In most eastern and southern sections the rainfall was light. Irrigation is beinz done In eastern counties, and in some cen tral localities dry winds blew out some grain. The weather was rather too cool for rapid development of vegetation and freezing temperature occurred In elevated eastern districts. In northwestern coun ties farm wort was delayed . by wet weather. Winter wheat and rye are doing well. Bye is heading In Columbia county and wheat is in the boot in Jackson county. Seeding of spring wheat, oats and barley continues, and in elevated eastern dis tricts a considerable acreage remains to be sown. arly sown spring grain is doing well. Corn planting is becoming mow general. In Douglas county some early planted corn rotted and replant ing will be necessary. Apples are blooming freely, but con ditions have not been altogether favorable for pollination, and spraying has been delayed by wet weather. Pears are drop ping heavily in Jackson county, and the drop of prunes in parts of the Willam ette valley is serious. Bipenlng of straw berries has been delayed by cool, cloudy weather, but a few have been marketed in Douglas county. Alfalfa Is making better growth, but stlil needs warmer weather. Other hay crops re doing well, although vetch Is some- wnat affected by aphis. Feed on the range is good to excellent. Shearing of sheep is extending to eastern counties. Lambing Is nearing completion. All stock is doing well. Potato planting Is becoming more gen eral. Early potatoes are growing fairly well. Gardens are showing improvement, but need warmer weather. Hops are being plowed. FARMERS ARE NOT SELLING WHEAT Holders Bullish With Sharp Advance in' '' ., Market. The turn upward of the wheat market yesterday made holders more bullish and the result was that very little business was done. Hard white, club and soft white bids were raised 6T cents at the Merchants' Exchange and other grades were 263 cents higher. The coarse grains were quiet. Oats bids ranged from un changed to SI lower. The government' weekly weather report en grain was slightly unfavorable. The Kansas state crop estimate makes the wheat crop of that state i:is.63.000 busn ela. Le Count wired from Kingfisher, Okla: "Wheat in this territory is in very bad condition. Crop badly damaged by drouth. Soil very dry. Wheat de teriorating very rapidly from drouth. Many field crops are expected to be failure. While some are fairly promising, they need rain badly. Think wheat here will average six bushel per acre. Oats are practically a toial loss as result of greea bugs and drouth." Steels and Similar Shares Are Weakest Features of Market. Foreign Bonds Strong. NEW YORK. May 11. Announcement of Germany's acceptance of the reparations terms failed to stimulate the stock market today, prices of the more important issues manifesting reactionary tendencies. Steels and affiliated shares were espe cially heavy, falling 1 to 5 points on ex tensive offerings. Tliese emanated largely from professional Interests which argued that home industries soon would have to contend with German competition. Other factors also entered into the In cessant liquidation of steels and kindred issues. These were curtailed production due to continued lack of demand and pros pects of additional dividend reductions and suspensions Similar considerations were operative in the irregular reversals registered by mo tors, food and miscellaneous specialties. while rails were under intermittent pres sure Oils were relatively firm, with some of the tobaccos and metals.
