Trading In Hands of Professionals Throughout Day Liberty Bonds Show Steadier Trend. NEW TORK. April 21. The stock mar ket today repeated Its recent reactionary trend. Trading was more active but pre ponderatingly professional. Several motors and affiliated Issues, no tably Studebaker, were strong. Steets and equipments were subjected to renewed pressure, the unfavorable quar terly earnings of the Republic Iron A Steel company, together with general Inaustnai conditions, militating against constructive efforts in those shares. Ralls and shippings denoted Increased restraint, due to adverse industrial fac tors. Delaware, Lackawanna Western was an exception, rising 14 points, pre sumably In anticipation of the large divi dend distribution authorized by the inter state commerce commission. Bears were most aggressive In the last hour, when drives sgainst leading steels, oils and food specislties resulted in gross reactions of 1 to 6 points. Shorts covered extensively before the close, however. Studebaker's extreme advance of 8tt points, most of which was retained, ef fecting marked improvement in the gen eral list. Salea amounted to 700,000 shares. On the board call loans were at 8Vj per cent, but In private negotiations such loans were again made at 5V and 5 per cent. Weakness of German marks, a datum stance ascribed to the allies' demand for transfer of the retchsbank's gold reserves, was the feature of the foreign exchange market, all other remittances, including sterling, reacting. Mixed conditions ruled In the bond mar ket. Liberty Issues showing a fair degree of steadiness, while domestic rails and industrials, as well aa Internationals, most ly registered nominal recessions.
