21, THE MORNING OREGOXIAN, TUESDAY, MARCII 22, 1921 K . : 1 v4 i FLOUR PRICES GUT 40 CENTS A BARREL Millers Follow Decline in Wheat Market. FAMILY PATENTS $9.40 Bakers' Grades Are Also Reduced Trading In Grain Light, With More Offering. The decline In flour pricea, which was expected as a result of the continued fall in wheat, wis announced by local millers yesterday. Family flour quotations are 4 wo 40 cents a barrel to $9.40 for the test patenta. bakers' flours ara 25350c cheaper, hard wheat being quoted at $8.25 and bluentem patenta at $7.75. Graham and whole wheat floura were reduced 40 centa. Wheat bids were unchanged on the local board, but the feeling in the market was weak. Country advices said farmers were offering; more freely than for soma time past. Coarse grains were quiet and weak. Oats and corn bida wero 5075 centa lower. There was no demand for barley The British purchase of 2.000,000 bushels at wheat in the east was confirmed, 800.000 being Manitoba winter. Russell aaid 1,000.000 bushels of wheat were want' ed for export yesterday. An Argentine private cable say 600.000 bushels of wheat were sold for export. The exportable surplus is 97,000,000 bushels, or 23,000,000 bushels less than official estimate. The weather forecast sent from Chicago said: "Generally fair tonight and Tuesday; fieezing temperatures In Illinois, Missouri, Iowa and Kannaa tonight; warmer in other atatt-a Tuesday." Texas reported tha appearance .of gTeen bugs. In Nebraska the soil is very dry sod rain insldo of a week Is imperative. Denver reported that Colorado grain Is badly in need of rain. Fuller markets In the east continue to decllno, owing to the large Importations from Denmark. In the past week New York waa chiefly affected, but other mar kets lost trade and sentiment waa bearisn over the entire country. The break in egg pricea and the reported difficulty of packers of eggs In securing adequate loans and rates has made butter people think butter prices are due for a considerable decline before the storage season. Do mestic receipts were slightly heavier, but not excessive as yet, and outside of Dan ish arrivals, eastern marketa are actually ahort of supplies and were firmer at the Hd of the week, but the steamer Oscar II Is) due on the 23d with 19.000 casks and the outlook Is not strong. Two "ar goes which arrived the past week totaled about 10.000 casks, but this is high cost butter, due to resale in transit up to fiOo. The average net decline in the week on S3 score butter waa 2VC from Monday through Friday at the four marketa Trad ing In atorage butter la almost dead. Hold era are working hard to use or sell, but prices are very low and aalea difficult. New Zealand butter from San Francisco evidently found a fair market as it was reported sold in transit at around 44c. Boston Is stuck on a lot of htgh-prlced storage butter. Following closely conditions In tha east, Fan Francisco butter prices continued on the downward grade. The tone of the market ahowed signs of steadiness Mon day and Tuesday, but It was unable to recover from the continued decline, and 92 score lost Sc from Monday to Friday, inclusive. Two cars of fresh butter went east In the flrat part of the week, and some shipping business to the north and south prevented a more rapid decline, but did not keep stocks from showing an accumulation at the cloae of the wee. The consensus of opinion Is that prices must go soma lower. Reoelpta hav in creased, the atorage aeaaon la still four to six weeks away, and outside demand is hardly atrong enough to keep the surplus cleaned up. Some reaction in prices may occur in tha event of a ateady to firm aatern market, thus allowing sufficient margin for shipping. However, with ap proximately 2,280.000 pounds of low-priced Danish butter arriving In New York next Wednesday, there Is slight confidence In firmer markets. As a great many eggs have gone .into storage at pricea higher than the present levels, butter men will no doubt be cautious about storing 'his year until assured that bottom pricea have been reached. EGO QUOTATIONS CUT TO 18 CENTS Buyers Kedoce Their Bids t Cents for Today's Receipts. TIgg prices continue to fall. Testerday'a large receipts were taken at 20 centa, but today's bids will be 2 cents lowep than thla price. In view of the ateady decline In the east, where storage operators are finding soma difficulty In getting funds, the local trade believes that prices here will go still lower. There was a drop of 8 cents In the Chicago market yester day, where storage pack sold on the ex change at 25 cents. Fresh eggs sold at 22 W 22 V4 cents on the Chicago board. There was a steadier feeling In the butter market than at the -close of laat week, as good gradna cleaned up better. Under grades, however, ara atlll drag ging. No change In print prices la In sight. Poultry was very scarca and firm. Heavy hens aold at 8033 eenta and light hena at 2rr-S cents. Dealers look for larger receipts because of the very low ' egg price. Country dreaaed meat were steady. Chreae Holding Reduced. Oold storage holdings of eggs throughout the United States were 19.4 per cent larger on March 1 than a year before. Butter holdings lncreaaed 15.T per cent, but cheese stock showed a decrease of 95.1 per cent. Official figures follow: March 1, March 1. 1021. 1020. Export buyinr on a liberal scale lifted wheat prices some what, but demand slackened and gains were practically wiped out. How much of It was domestic and how much foreign could not be readily ascertained. Knowledge that active measures were being taken to fa cilitate passage of a new emergency tariff counted likewise in favor of the bulla and so did scantiness of rural offerings. Buying power, nevertheless, became al most exhausted afted midday and this fact led to some speculative selling pres sure, favorable weather and crop con ditions were additional bearish factora. Damage resulting from the elevator ex plosion here gave an upward Bwing to corn and oats for a while, but the effect failed to last. rrovlslons were governed chiefly bv the t, ?, u hog which although at tlrst higher underwent sharp breaks. . tZihe hic"o market letter received yes ofrdpHortlaydh.a?d?rbeClt C basedhoStTl!OW"1 'renK,h from the start Bfa7r. frn Way' dry ""'her com- reSnrt. f 11 and "0"twest and reports of light country offerings After midday the market gave way to a renewal of outside liquidation and declined S cents in a very short space of time to within a fraction of the lowest price on the crop. It was estimated shortly before the close that total export sales of Manitobas and ?JmneLn'J!c. falu,"day "Bsregated over S.0110,000 bushels. Messages from Kansas City and Omaha said that while there Is no serious deficiency of moisture as yet In western Kansas and Nebraska, that terri tory must have rain verv soon. Th., viihi supply decreased 1,8:10,000 bushels, bring ing me total down to 24,579.000 bushels and with the country maintaining a hold ing attitude, further reductions can be ex pected. A preponderance of selling, such as witnessed today, may further depress nits marnei, out witn exoorl business still running large, cash premiums being firmly held and the crop scare season at hand, we believe the logical brend should be upward. "Corn Weakness followed tho earlv strength and the market closed around bottom figures. Receipts of 40 cars met a fair demand and sold mostly H to lc higher, although the close was unchanged. The spot basis was slightly better. The increase of 2,870,000 bushels in tha visible supply was about In line with expecta tions. Statistically, there seems Uttie foundation for a constructive opinion, but liquidation in the futurea market has been quite thorough and the technical position at the moment ia such as to permit of a substantial rally coincident with any strength in wheat. "Oals Displayed aecioea siremrtn aur ing the forenoon, but met considerable hedging sales on the bulge and declined towards the close with other grains.
