TOMLINSON ONLY RIVAL .ewlj--Elected Official Will Begin Duties Immediately, Mating One Change Among Deputies. Frank S. Grant, yesterday waj elected city attorney to fill the va cancy caused by the resignation of W. P. LaRoche, who retired from municipal service to re-enter private practice and to defend John t Kther idgre, ex-preaideot of Morris Brothers, Inc. The election of Mr. Grant was unan imous, on the second ballot. H. M. Tomlinson, assistant city attorney, re ceived two votes on the first ballot City Commissioner Pier nominated Mr. Tomlinson to the position, alter a letter recommending Tomlinson for the position, signed by Federal Judge Bean, had been read. City Commis sioner Bigelow seconded the motion. Bsrbur Nominates Uraul. Commissioner Barbur then nomi nated Mr. Grant, Commissioner Mann seconding the nomination. A. poll of the council gave Mr. Grant three votes. Mayor Baker casting his vote for him, while Mr. Tomlinson had two votes. Commissioner Pier then moved the unanimous election of Mr. Grant, which motion prevailed. The new city attorney was notified of his appointment, which Is effective at 12 o'clock tonight, and in response to a summons from the council im mediately went to the city ball. He was notified formally of his election by Mayor Baker, and ac cepted the honor in a short address in which he gave high praise to his predecessor. Immediately thereafter be was sworn In by Chief Deputy Auditor Grutze. One Deputy to Retire. Because of a charter provision, which removes all deputies employed In the city attorney's office upon the retirement of ths city attorney, Mr Grant signed an order reappointing all present deputies. When asked If he contemplated any changes In the force now employed In the legal department. City Attor ney Grant stated that he planned no changes with possibly one exception. Just what change was contemplated could not be explained at this time, Mr. Grant said. The deputies now employed in the city attorney's office are H. M. Tom linson, I-.. E. Datourette, Stanley Myers, Lionel C. Mackay and K. Y Lansing Jr. Succeeds Own Successor. Mr. Grant served as city attorney for several years, having been ad vanced to this position from a depu tyship under J. P. Ksvanaugtt, now circuit judge In Multnomah county. He retired from the city attorney's office in 1913, having been succeeded by W. P. LaRoche, whose 8-year ten ure will close officially today. Mr. Grunt is illustrious potentate or Al Ruder temple. Mystic Shrine and also holds a chair in the Sunny side chapter. Royal Arch Masons. He is also a prominent member of the Knights of Pythias. FOREST MEN TO CONFER WKEK'S 3IEKTXXG OF SUPER VISORS FEB. 14 TO 21. Conference to Be Round Table Dis cussion of Divisions of Work Carried on in Forests. Forest supervisors from Oregon and Washington will gather in Portland for the first time since 1917 for a week's conference February 14 to 21. Plans for the meeting, which will be attended by C4 supervisors, are now being completed by George H. Cecil, district forester, who will preside. The conference will be a round table discussion of all the various di visions of work carried on In forests and for an interchange of ideas among the supervisors. C E. Rachford. grazing Inspector from Washington, D. C, will be pres ent and will speak on "Grazing Ad ministration." C. & Chapman will speak on "Fire Co-operation" and E. T. Allen on "A Programme of For estry for the Nation." Open discussions will be held at each meeting with a supervisor in charge of the general programme. EUGENE, Or., Jan. 7. (Special.) The report for the past year of the local branch of the United States em ployment service, made out by Man ager Armltage. shows that 6346 per sons were directed to employers thrrugh the office. Of this number 4736 were men and (10 women. The sawmjlls and lumber camps were the largest employers of men In this district In the past year, accord ing to the report, although farmers and fruit growers were furnished a great deal of help through the office during harvest and the picking season.
