Approximately suuu persons attended
the Ay fair last Saturday afternoon
and evening in the college armory
under the direction of the school of
agriculture and the Ag club. The
various departments had their booths
full of products, consisting of every
thing from dresses made by the home
economics girls, to farm appliances
being demonstrated by the farm me
chanics students. A parade was held
in the evening.
Alfred W. Loy of Buena Vista won
first price of $10 in the department
scoring contest, -while E. R. Peterson
of North Bend won second place and
the $5 prize. The animal husbandry
men won the Dean Cordley cup in the
department contest. They also won
the cup given by the First National
bank of Corvallis. W. C. Jones of
Ottawa, Kan. won first prize in the
upper classmen's contest, a round
trip ticket to Portland, and a pass
to the Pacific International livestock
Bhow. Kugene Hubbard. Corvallis,
won first place in the under class
men's contest, getting a free initia
tion into the 'Withycombe club and a
ticket to the livestock show. W. S.
Taylor and Ronald Hope. Salem, were
given honorable mention.
A roasted chicken, the prize In the
gg guessing contest, was won by C
K. Baker of Los Angeles, while Will
iam Caldwell was awarded a ten
pound roast of beef as second prize.
Wallace E. Niles of Grants Pass was
manager of the fair and Frank Brown
of Walla Walla, Wash., assistant
manager. Bob Warrens. Portland,
iad charge of the exhibits and Leo
Vpitzbart, Salem, handled the pub
licity. Harry Wellman of Umanine,
fr.', was treasurer, and Professors C.
It. Ruzek and O. M. Nelson were
faculty advisers. Judges were O. M.
Plummer and N. C. Maris of Portland,
and W. H. Savage of Corvallis.
SUIT TO BE APPEALED
Supremo Court to Decide Gasoline
Case for County.
The suit brought by John "W.
Kaste against the county commis
sioners and others to restrain the
county from furnishing the commis
sioners with coupon books for gaso
line and auto supplies for their pri
vate cars will be appealed to the
supremo court. This was the decision
reached yesterday by Commissioners
luck and Hoyt, who have been'using
their machines for transaction of
county business, owing? to shortage
of county cars.
Both officials contend the arrange
ment was an economical one and
That hiring automobiles through reg
ular channels would be much more
expensive. The coupon books were
piven thotn after the circuit court
decided that it is against public pol
icy to use county supplies for their
cars.
GIRL LEAPS FROM WINDOW
Eva Bonar, Aged 10, Fails to Es
cape From City Jail.
?!va Bonar, 16, made an Ineffectual
ffort to escape from the city jail
yesterday when she leaped from a
third-floor window to a heavily
fccreened skylight, on the first floor.
She was slightly Injured by the fall,
and police took her into custody.
The girl, who is held by the wom
en's protective division, ran away
from a boarding school near Corne
lius. Or., last week. Her mother lives
at 387 Yamhill street. The girl is
held as a witness against Gilbert An
derson, who faces prosecution for
contributing to her delinquency.
YAQUINA FISHING GOOD
Old Residents Say Salmon Bite
Better Than for 14 Years.
NRWPORT. Or., Oct. 27. (Special.)
Old residents say it has been 14
years since salmon fishing in Yaquina
bay has been even one-half as good
as it is now. At present the fish
are biting hungrily and it is a daily
event to walk down the streets with
from three to a dozen beautiful sil
versides, caught in from one to three
hours. Two Newport women recently
caught two dozen big salmon with-
