' Students of business conditions among the leading realtors of the country are unanimous in predicting a full decade of unprecedented pros perity, according to F. E. Taylor, president of the national association of real estate boards, who returned to Portland yesterday after a month's tour which included visits in the larper cities of the east and middle vest. Kvery elgn points to pronounced building activity, commencing soon after the first of the year, Jlr. Taylor cays. He reports a pronounced short age in all classes of realty improve ments throughout the country and de clares that the Pacific northwest should profit Immeasurably by the expected Impetus eoort to be given the lumber market. Inuring his travels, which were made in official capacity as head of America's realtors, Mr. Taylor deliv ered addresses before business men end realtors in Chicago, Detroit, In dianapolis, St. Louis, Kansas - City, Omaha, Council Bluffs, Pittsburg. Lincoln, Denver, Colorado Springs and lioise. Aortliireiit Now Recognized. Tn these cities he had an opportu nity to talk with thousands of sub stantial business men and investors and to sense the eastern attitude toward Portland, and he says that he found that the Oregon metropolis and the entire Pacific northwest now are recognized as never before. Frequent ly his hosts spoke in a complimentary way of the Columbia river highway, Frank Branch Riley and the entertain ment accorded the visiting Shriners at last summers convention. Much capital and many desirable home Beckers are headed this way, Mr. Tay lor says. As a result of the work accom plished at the meeting of the execu tive committee of the national asso ciation of real estate boards, at which Mr. Taylor presided in Denver, the association has established a new bu reau for research and information at Washington, D. C. This bureau will be under the direc tion of Robert B. Armstrong, who aerved as assistant secretary of the treasury under President Roosevelt and who handled the pre-convention publicity campaign for Senator Hard ins. Chicago Headquarters Now. Another constructive step was the transfer of the national headquarters from Minneapolis, where It has been located for many years, to Chicago, which is a more central point. Na tional Secretary Ingersoll will be pro vided with a greatly increased office force, including an assistant secre tary and a publicity expert, who will be charged with the responsibility of carrying on a country-wide educa tional campaign. Through co-operation of the re search bureau and the Chicago head quarters, monthly bulletins will be sent to the entire membership of the national association, already more than 12,000 In number, touching on questions of legislation, taxation. housing and kindred topics relating to real estate. The first bulletin will be issued this month. In the face of recent census fig- ortes. which show an increased drift cf population from the country to the cities, the realtors are planning an energetic "back to the farm" cam paign similar to the "own vour own home" movement which swept the en tire country in recent years. Farm Service Pledged. The realtors have placed the serv ices of their farm land committee at tne disposal of Secretary of Agricul ture Meredith and have pledged sup port and co-operation in a construc tive campaign to make farm life more attractive by building good roads and Deuer schools, and by extending met ropolitan comforts and conveniences to the country districts as far as pos-fcilde. While in Chicago Mr. Taylor found that the realtors of that city already are laying plans for the next annual convention of real estate boards to be held next July. It is predicted that this convention, which will terminate Mr. Taylor's term as ' president, will be the largest convention of business men ever held in the United States. Ail attendance of at least 5000 is ex pected. The recent meeting in Denver was "i largest in the history of th nr panization, despite the fact that it was held soon after the increase in rail road rates and at a point farther wf tiian any previous meeting. The next executive meetings w 11 be held in Atlanta, Ga., in January, and in one of no r.ew i-.ngiand cities In the spring. JAPANESE KILLED BY CAR Gardener, Loading Car, Falls to 'Xote Approach, of Train. CUI.VABT, Or., Oct, 12. (Special.) Failing to note aproach of the Oregon Electric limited Thursday evening, T. Kittahara. Japanese gardener of Lake Labish, was instantly killed as he was loading a car with celerv. McDonald, federal prohibition di rector for Washington, announced to day. He stated he is acting on in structions from Robert C. Saunders, United States district attorney. Agents last nignt set a torcn to a building one mile east of Newport, on Lake Washington, where they dis covered two stills. Director McDonald explained that the Volstead act calls for destruction of all property connected with the Uliciiy uiMiiiuLiun, inciuumg uuua inirs in which a still is harbored. Th a director did not know this morning who owned the building burned down by his agents last evening. They were unable to make any arrests as a result of their find. The building was hidden in the dense underbrush east of Newport. Its approach was guarded by trees which had been felled across a path. Destroyed with the building in the fire which agents set to the dace were 400 pounds of molasses, eight barrels of raisin and molasses mash, two gasoline stoves and a kerosene stove. The raid was made as a result of information given by persons who stumbled on the distilling plant while hunting. Tontliful Robbers Caught. EUGENE. Or.. Oct. 12. (Special.) George Prather' and Howard Clark, 14 and 12 years respectively, were yesterday committea to the state in dustrial school for boys at Salem. These boys admitted entering a num ber of places of business recently and committing thefts. They were caught a few nights ago by Officer Judkins in the act of attempting to enter a hardware store. SALEM, Or., Oct. 12. (Special.) The Oregon public service commis sion in an order issued here today authorized a slight increase in the rates of the Lafayette Telephone com pany, with headquarters at Lafayette, Yamhill county. The estimated value of the property is $500 and It serves about 60 patrons exclusive of sub scribers on farmer-owned lines. The increase In rates will become effective October 16. Jacksonville Starts Fight. MEDFORD, Or.. Oct. 12. (Special.) The fight of the people of Jackson ville to have the courthouse retained in that city and to have the voters turn down the propostiion to move It to Medford at the November election was publicly inaugurated in Medford tonight when Colonel H.
