10 THE MORNING OREGONLA.N, MONDAY, JULY 19, 1920 ALL ISMS ATTACKED BY BILLY SUNDAY 3000 Persons Hear Albany Chautauqua Address. PROFITEER ALSO RAPPED Xieague of Xations Is Approved, but Kot Without Reservations. Agitators Scored. ALBANY. Or.. July 18. (Special.) Before a crowd of 3000 persons at tending the Albany Chautauqua in Kryant park this afternoon Rev. Billy Sunday, the noted evangelist, ham mered socialism and I. W. W.lsm hard. He said that when the socialists nomi nated Debs in his convict stripes for president they spit on every star in the flag. Mr. Sunday urged regulation of Im migration and the Americanization of those who came, declaring that while respectable foreigners who seek in good faith to become Americans are welcome, it is time this country stepped being the dumping ground for the refuse of foreign nations. Foreign Agitators Scored. He particularly condemned the for eign agitator who tries to stir up labor troubles to undermine the gov ernment. He praised labor as a whole as patriotic but unmercifully flayed the walking delegate who causes trouble. There is no reason now, the speaker eaid. for industrial unrest with pros perous conditions prevailing, and he argued that the time had come any way when capital and labor had no right to fight each other while the general public suffered. When labor picks the pocket of capital and capital picks the pocket of the public, will we stand for it, he asked. Profiteer Also Scored. He condemned the profiteer who buys for $5.00 and sells for $20 but said the man who strikes for higher wages just because he can get them through organized power is just as much a profiteer, though in a letser degree. -X believe in a league of nations," Mr. Sunday said, "but not in a league of nations without reservations. I don't believe in Mr. Wilson's theory. I don't believe in throwing the consti tution and the Monroe Doctrine on the international scrap heap and letting a bunch of foreigners run this coun y try." The speaker argued for good citi zenship in different activities and said this country needed an old-time religious awakening, saying that the beet Christian is the best citizen. MILLIONS IX SHELLS SHIPPED BY GREAT BRITAIN. English Ministry of Munitions and "War Department Silent as to Reason lor Preparations. (Copyright by the New York World. Pub lished by Arrangement.) LONDON, July IS. An article In the Dally News by C. Douglas Stephen eon says: "Since the armistice the American government has shipped to America thousands of ppunds of guns and ammunition which it purchased from the British government. The American government is at present shipping to America from England complete batteries of eight-inch howitzers, six-Inch guns and eixty pounders. There are 100 complete batteries of special 'British make' jet to be shipped. "But the guns are of very little use without ammunition. The American government has therefore shipped to America shells of special British make. In the past six months alone the American government has shipped from Kngland at least 6000 tons of explosives. "Just what America wants with these guns and this ammunition is difficult to find out. The American embassy, the American military at tache and the American liquidation board in London are not prepared to make a statement unless Instructed to do so by the state department at Washington. The British ministry of munitions, a party in this transaction, is not prepared to make a definite Btatement as to the amount of guns and ammunition purchased by the American government from the Brit ish government without the approval of the American government." PLANE UPSETS ON BEACH CRAFT TCKXS OVER LANDING AS LOOSE SAXD IS STRUCK. O. K. Jerfery of Portland Firm and J. II. Kinney of Tacoma Es cape Without Injury. HOQUIAM. Wash.. July 18. (Spe cial.) Dropping unheralded from the sky an airplane glided gracefully down for a landing on Pacific beach Saturday evening. It appeared to.be alighting perfect ly, but got too far up the beach, struck the soft sand and turned over. Neither of the two men in the plane was injured and, aside from smashing the propellor, only slight damage was done the plane. The two men in the machine were J. H. Kinney of Tacoma and O. K. Jeflery of Portland. ' Th plane left Lakeview, near Tacoma, yesterday afternoon to fly to Long Beach, south of Willapa harbor. The men were flying without a compass, lost their way and finally reached the beach, which they intended to follow to Long Beach to spend Sunday. The landing was forced due to slight motor trouble.
