20 THir MOHXIXG OREGONTAX, FRIDAY, JUNE 23, 1920 F UGIT1VEPICKPQGKE I CAPTURED BY POLICE George B. Rodfield Notorious for Fleeing Jails. PURSE OF WOMAN TAKEN Filching Attempt Jnrlnff Farade Apprehended Sentence of One Year la Imposed. George B. Rodfield, pickpocket, -who bears the reputation of having escaped from every jail he haa been In and who haa been a fugitive from Justice ever since he sawed his way. out of the Jail at Akron, O., on May 13 of this year, waa sentenced yesterday to one year In the county jail by Muni cipal Judge Rossman on a charge of larceny and will now have a chance to see what he can do with a. Port land jail. , Rodfield was arreated by Patrol men Abbott, Ferry and Burdlck at Sixth and Stark streets during the parade Wednesday night after he is said to have taken the purse of Mrs. F. W, Griswold, 677 Drew street. Back Sawa in Teat. ' "When he was arrested he carried1 an automatic pistol and after he had pent the night In jail a search of his clothing revealed three hack saw blades concealed in the lining of his vest. Police believe he had the blades with the intention' of sawing out of jail agraln. Rodfield was caught last night by Mrs. Griswold in the act of taking her purse. He attempted to throw off suspicion. "Here is your purse, lady," he said, Tfering it to her. The police, how ever, were called and caught the man after a chase of about a block. ."Do you think you can get out of here?" Rodfield was asked at the city jail yesterday. Sensational Escape Made. "Oh, I don't know, it doesn't look mo tight." he replied with a smile All the time he was talking with the police his restless gaze was searching every corner, door and window and It was evident that his mind was oc cupied with possibilities for making another escape. Rodfield, who also has the aliases of Moe VogaV and A Brooks, is small and wiry and his conversation gives evidence of a keen mind. His most sensational escape Is said to have been from Fort Leavenworth, Kan., where he concealed himself in the ash can and was hauled out with the ashfp. When he escaped from the Akron, O., Jail three' murderers made 4 their escape with him and, so far as Is known here, are still at large. The Portland authorities wired the authorities at Fort Leavenworth and Akron, O., yesterday to let them know that Rodfield was in' custody here. It Is possible that he may be permitted to serve his term here and then be taken by the government authorities for the escape from Fort Leaven worth. . Army Trouble Experienced. It was when he was in the army in 1918. that Rodfield first got into trouble, according to the ' Portland authorities. On some minor charge he is said to have been confined in the prison at Fort Jay in August, 1919. From there he made his escape and after varied experiences, in one of which he is said to have taken- a shot at an officer attempting to ar rest him, he was confined in Fort Leavenworth disciplinary barracks. After serving nine days of his four- and-a-half-year sentence at Fort Leav enworth, he put a partition in an ash can, got in the can beneath the parti tion, and with ubea covering him, was hauled away with the rubbish. This second escape was in November 18, 1919. Rodfield was arrested in Akron, O., May 10, of this year, on a charge of grand larceny after he is said to have pulled a pocket picking job. Accord ing to Rodfield, the sheriff, follow ing his arrest, made the boast that the prisoner would never escape from the Jail. Rodfield's answer was his hack saw with which he sawed three bars and engineered a jail escape. Eighty-one prisoners with minor sen tences refused to walk out, but he and the three murderers made their escape. Age Given as 22 Team. Previous to coming to Portland Rodfield told the police that he had been playing the races at Tia Juana, Mexico. He gave his profession as clerk and told the police that he was 22 years of age. ' He was charged with larceny from a person. Lloyd Hopkins, who was arrested Monday night after he is said to have burglarized the residence of C. N. Ktckelson of about 1100 worth of silverware and some wearing apparel pleaded guilty to a charge of larceny in the municipal court and was sen tenced to six months in jail. Hopkins was seen leaving the residence of Mr. Nickelson and was captured after a chase of several blocks. H. J. Currln, automobile dealer, charged with issuing a check with out having sufficient funds in the bank, was held to answer to the grand jury by Judge Rossman. His bond was fixed at $500. Charges against Currin were filed by P. W. Bucknum of Salem, Or. Cur rin is said to have passed a check for $378 without funds. William Case, arrested after he was said to have taken a purse contain ing $65 from J. M. Remington, 850 Fast Eighth street north, received a tsix months suspended sentence. Case pleaded guilty. This is the outstanding fact which comes to you out of the memorable tone-test recital given last Friday at the White Temple: A new era in music is here. Mr. Edison has lifted the phonograph to the dignity of a new art. You can no longer be satisfied with a phonograph that imitates. Now, you want a phonograph that equals the human voice. ' You know there is such a phonograph. Mr. Edison made an astounding, test with the Official Laboratory Model of the New Edison to prove it. Portland heard the New Edison Re-Create Marie Morrisey's voice in direct comparison with Morri say's living voice. So realistic was the New Edi son's performance that' no one in the entire audi ence could distinguish it from Morrisey's living voice. Z5e. "The Phonograph with a Sour You yourself can have such a phonograph. Let us show you exact duplicates of the Official Labora tory Model, which triumphed in the tone-test.
